Rádio Svobodná Evropa/RL v Praze: Nový začátek / A new beginning: radio free europe/radio liberty moving to Prague

Voleská, Dita January 2012 (has links)
The presented text is concerned with the development of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) in the period from the late 1980s to mid-1990s. The main aspiration of this Diploma Thesis is the introduction of these specific radio projects in a new era with new missions. RFE/RL gained great popularity during the Cold War period as they were powerful tools in the fight against communist regimes in Europe and the Soviet Union. However, with the fall of Iron Curtain, it was generally anticipated that their tasks were complete. Both Services had to fight against these general assumptions and prove that their mission had yet more functions. Thus, they focused on promoting ideas and principles of democratic and liberal societies. This type of educational broadcasting proved to be very much needed in the post-communist countries which sought to implement the norms of the Western world. This paper describes the overall, somewhat complicated story of RFE/RL, its mission and further developments in broadcasting, which were fundamentally influenced by plans for budget cuts and resulted in the relocation of RFE/RL's operations from Munich to Prague. For more thorough understanding of these issues, the paper also draws on broader historical context of RFE/RL's development from the very beginning of its operations in...

[en] INTERVENTIONS: THE INFLUENCE OF DOMESTIC POLITICS ON FOREIGN POLICY DECISIONS / [pt] INTERVENÇÕES: INFLUÊNCIA DA POLÍTICA DOMÉSTICA EM DECISÕES DE POLÍTICA EXTERNA

CRISTINA VINCIPROVA DOS REIS 07 June 2010 (has links)
[en] This dissertation concerns the decisionmaking processes of foreign policy which led to the interventions of the United States in the Dominican Republic in 1965 and the USSR in Czhecoslovakia in 1968. I analyze how the superpowers` domestic politics influenced their foreign policies, studying the motivations of numerous internal groups and, mainly, how consensus around the military interventions was produced. I explain that those decisions were a result of considerations about the most appropriate tactics for enhancing or, at least, maintaining the relative power of those States. I try to demonstrate, therefore, that divergences between domestic groups over tactic decisions may hinder a State`s efforts on foreign policy, but those domestic groups have a common interest, which is defined in terms of their State`s relative power. With the results of this analysis, we can evaluate the advantage of neoclassical realism, as opposed to the liberal paradigm, in terms of explaining power when it comes to matters of national security policies.

Between Realpolitik and Idealism: The Slovak-Polish Border, 1918-1947

Jesenský, Marcel 27 April 2012 (has links)
My doctoral dissertation examines the delimitation of the Slovak - Polish border in the interwar period and the impact of the cession of the parts of the Slovak districts in Orava and Spiš to Poland on the relations between Czecho-Slovakia and Poland, Czechoslovakia and Poland, and Slovakia and Poland. The Tešín question dominated the border delimitation and the relations and the Orava and Spiš questions and the delimitation of the Slovak - Polish border received much less scholarly attention. While acknowledging the complexity of the issue under consideration, this work attempts to make small contribution towards filling existing gap in historiography. The majority of research work occurred at the diplomatic archives in Prague, Paris and Warsaw (Archives of the Foreign Ministry, Archives diplomatiques and Archiwum Akt Nowych). Some primary research also took place in Bratislava, Warsaw, Washington and Ottawa. This work seeks to interpret primary sources in an innovative way which demonstrates influence exerted by the Orava and Spiš questions on the relations between Czecho-Slovakia and Poland, Czechoslovakia and Poland, Slovakia and Poland, Slovaks and Poles, Slovaks and Czechs, and Czechs and Poles. Effectiveness of the Orava and Spiš questions to carve out their own constituencies and to communicate the message of their populations were limited or enhanced by contemporary configuration of international and internal factors. The Orava and Spiš border delimitations in the Slovak-Polish border and their consequences for the Slovak-Czech-Polish relations, remain largely neglected by the scholars in the English and French historiographies. The Orava and Spiš border delimitations play an important role in understanding of Slovak-Polish-Czech relations and international relations in the interwar and post World War II periods. The questions posed by examining the Orava and Spiš border delimitations are as relevant in Schengen Europe as they were almost a century ago.

Josef Novotný - historik ve službách KSČ / Josef Novotný - historian in the service of the KSČ

TRÜBENEKROVÁ, Petra January 2011 (has links)
This diploma thesis approaches the life story of one of the very important Czech historians postwar historiography, which has so far been overlooked, however. The work does not try to give information only about the life and works of Joseph Novotny, but classifies the historian in the context of time, focusing on his views and attitudes, which supported the communist ideology of the 60th of the 20 century, which was a great supporter. The author in creating the present study was based primarily on personal collection of Josef Novotný, which is stored in the Archives of the National Museum in Prague, Josef Novotny's work itself, the literature on the history of the First Republic, Second Republic and the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, not least in the literature used to history of the historiography of the late 20th century. The work is divided into five chapters. The first chapter gives information about the life of Joseph Novotny. From second to fifth chapter are portrayed his personal attitudes and opinions of the historical situation until 30 years until the early 40th of the 20 century. About Josef Novotny are not yet issued any publication that would cover his life and work. Even literature is silent about him most. Therefore, the author sees the biggest benefit is that the present study provided information about the historian, who has been neglected Czech historiography, and perhaps opened a new research topic that can be developed further historians.

Drogy v socialistickém Československu / Drugs in socialist Czechoslovakia

Kolář, Jan January 2018 (has links)
The issue of drugs and drug addiction is one of the greatest unresolved (and probably unresolvable) problems of mankind. This topic encountered a rocket rise in the Czech environment especially after the Velvet Revolution. The problem itself, nevertheless, germinated in the times of Communist dictatorship. For ideological reasons, however, it has long been trivialized, concealed, or attributed to the "decadent West" and to its affiliated domestic "elements". Serious drug-related debates took place in the Normalization period almost exclusively on the pages of professional publications and magazines kept from the eyes of ordinary citizen. The topic of drug addiction began to penetrate the public space without the old ideological templates in the second half of the 1980s, in connection with liberalization after the inauguration of M.S. Gorbachev into the leader of Communists in the Soviet Union. Regardless of the "wishes and complaints" of the Communist establishment, a subculture of young drug addicts emerged in Czechoslovakia, which had its values, hierarchies, symbols and its problems too. In the 1980s, several tens of thousands of people were involved, and if we add several hundreds of thousands elderly people who abused psychotropic medications, we find out how a major problem it was in the...

ÚSTAV HOSPODÁŘSKÝCH A SOCIÁLNÍCH DĚJIN ANOTACE DIZERTAČNÍ PRÁCE V zajetí televize Aktéři, televizní žánry a programy v USA a Československu v 2. polovině 20. století CAPTURED BY TELEVISION ACTORS, TELEVISION GENRES AND PROGRAM IN THE US AND CZECHOSLOVAKIA IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE 20TH CENTURY Mgr. Michaela Blažková Vedoucí dizertační práce: Doc. PhDr. Michal Pullmann, Ph.D. Praha 2018 Summary Against the backdrop of political, economic and cultural changes, changes have been taking place in the United States of America in the 1950s, even at the level of whole society. One of the crucial changes was the entrance of television broadcasting into the environment of social relations and relationships. Television, as a new form of media that aims to entertain, inform and educate, had very quickly found its way to the most of households where it has settled adamantly. Initially, however, a programmed composition was not firmly established, which sought its stable image at this time in the form of trial and error. In the Czechoslovakia, and later also in the Czech Republic, TV has also won many supporters. The technical form of the broadcasting scheme was formed on the basis of the actual technical possibilities and the range of the transmitting time. In addition to political influence on broadcasting until 1989,...

Elity Komunistické strany Československa na stránkách Rudého práva v 50. letech 20. století / The elite of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia on the pages of Rudé právo in 50s´ of 20th century .

STEHLÍK, Petr January 2015 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with a detailed analysis of the daily Rudé právo in 1951 - 1960. It is focused in detail on leading representatives of the Communist Party and their impact on the situation in the former Czechoslovakia in ´50s, as well as on significant events in this period. The work will consist in comparing the real facts and distorted facts about personalities and events of that time as they were presented by Rudé právo as the propaganda newspaper of the Communist Party. The main aim of the thesis is to make a reader aware of the impartiality of Rudé právo which played a dominant role in the former media scene and greatly influenced the general public who did not have the opportunity to compare information with other news. It is important as well to the reader understand how powerful the media had already been that time, when Rudé právo was able to significantly support a cult of personality mainly around Klement Gottwald and J. V. Stalin, when a reader had no opportunity to gain any information than what the governance of communist Czechoslovakia wanted to. Besides the already mentioned cults of personalities the work will deal with propaganda of communism, the Soviet Union and the anti-Americanism which was propagated mainly between 1950 - 1953 in almost every issue of the newspaper. After reading this thesis, the reader should understand the content of Rudé právo and its importance. He should realize that the main aim was to arouse belief of the citizens of Czechoslovakia that "Western world", especially the United States, is an enemy that wants to control the whole world and that its leaders are the aggressors and the enemies of peace. The Soviet Union and its leaders should then be the protection against so-called warmongers from the USA. Due to then lack of information it was very difficult for an average working Czechoslovak reader to know that the reality was quite the opposite.
