Em geral, tais concepções apresentam-se fundamentadas em duas perspectivas antagônicas, que se distanciam essencialmente pela modalidade linguística que deve ser utilizada pela pessoa com surdez - língua oral ou língua de sinais. O aspecto linguistico também adquire grande importância no contexto da Psicologia Histórico-Cultural, na qual a linguagem enquanto função psicológica superior é um elemento central para a compreensão do desenvolvimento humano. Na tentativa de compreender como uma pessoa surda percebe sua condição de surdez, a presente pesquisa teve como objetivos: a) identificar as concepções de surdez apresentadas por surdos adultos que se comunicam em língua de sinais, b) analisar os conceitos que o surde tem de si mesmo enquanto usuário dessa modalidade linguistica; c) verificar quais aspectos influenciam a identificação de uma pessoa surda, por outro sujeito na mesma condição; e d) investigar a influência do fator surdez na escolha de pares com quem um sujeito surde manifesta interesse em se relacionar. Participaram do estudo dez sujeitos surdos adultos, usuários da Língua Brasileira de Sinais - Libras, membros da comunidade surda de Bauru -SP. A coleta dos dados foi realizada individualmente, tendo como instrumentos: questionário de caracterização, roteiro de entrevista semiestruturada e um teste sociométrico, baseado em fotografias. Os procedimentos de coleta foram filmados, transcritos e posteriormente analisados, mediante organização de categorias elaboradas a partir das semelhanças identificadas nas falas dos participantes. Os dados obtidos indicam que os surdos adultos descrevem essa condição com base em aspectos diversos, relacionados às suas experiências de vida, resultando em múltiplas concepções de surdez, que se manifestam de forma concomitante. In general, these concepts are presented based on two opposing perspectives, which are distant from the essentially linguistic modality that should be used by deal people - oral language or sign language. The linguistic aspect is very important in the context of Historic-Cultural Psychology, in which language while superior psychological function is central to understanding human development. In an attempt to understand how a deaf person perceives his condition of deafness, this research aimed to: a) identify the concepts of deafness presented by deaf adults sho communicate in sign language, b) analyze the concepts that the deaf must itself as a user of this type language, c) ascertain which aspects influence the identification of a deaf person by another person in the same condition, and d) investigate the influence of deafness factor in the choice of peers with whom a deaf expresses in relate. The study included ten subjects deaf adult users of the Brazilian Sign Language - Libras, members of the deaf community of Bauru-SP. Data collection was performed individually, and as instruments characterization questionnaire, semi-structured interviews and a sociometric test, based on photos. The collection procedures were videotaped, transcribed and later analyzed by the organization of categories drawn from the identified similarities in the speeches of the participants. The data indicate that deaf adults describe this condition based on various aspects related to their life experiences, resulting in multiple conceptions of deafness, which are manifested in a concomitant and sometimes contradictory. These same concepts are presented while guiding criteria for the identification of deafness in the photos when the participants described the photos as evidence hearing aids, even though they are not visible.
