Parental divorce and midshipmen performance at the United States Naval Academy

Siegrist, Allen M. 06 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited / This study examines the relationship of parental divorce to the performance of Naval Academy Midshipman. Parental Status was determined by the ACE survey, which is completed in the plebe year. Parent Status of midshipmen is merged with Institutional Research Data to determine effects of parental divorce on midshipmen performance. For the purposes of the study, numerous aspects of performance are measured: (1) academic grade point average, (2) military grade point average, (3) conduct, (4) attrition rates, (5) participation in varsity athletics, and (6) leadership responsibilities. The common expectation is that midshipmen from divorced families will perform lower than midshipmen from intact families. Lower performance was noted in academic and military grade point averages, attrition, and participation in varsity athletics among midshipmen from divorced families. No significant difference in performance was noted in conduct or leadership responsibilities. / Lieutenant, United States Naval Reserve

Rozvod manželství a jeho občanskoprávní důsledky / The divorce and its civil-law consequences

Frček, Mojmír January 2012 (has links)
My dissertation thesis is concerned with the theme of divorce and its civil-law consequences. It would be difficult to find any other legal concept in the real life that has undergone so many changes as divorce and the associated civil-law consequences. While compiling this thesis I strived to become acquainted primarily with any available theoretical sources, such as commentary literature, specialised books, legal textbooks and, last but not least, also specialised magazines, both printed, such as Právní rozhledy, Soudní rozhledy, Rodinné právo, Právo a rodina and Právní rádce, including magazines published by relevant professional chambers - Bulletin advokacie (Czech Bar Association), Ad Notam (Notary Chamber of the Czech Republic) and Komorní listy (Chamber of Distrainers of the Czech Republic), and the electronic ones, such as epravo.cz or eLAW.cz. Where relevant legal opinions on a particular matter varied, I recorded this plurality of opinions and, at the same time, I formulated my own stance. As the topic of my thesis consisted in studying applicable law, I heavily stressed that account should be taken of any decisions of general courts as well as of the Constitutional Court. Where the court case-law had been developing over the years and either inconsistent or even contradictory legal...

The Long-Term Impact of Divorce on College Student Autonomy

Carrigan, Amy Jo 01 January 2015 (has links)
This research study examined autonomy in young adult college students who grew up in intact households with 2 biological parents, compared to young adult college students who grew up in nonintact households without 2 biological parents due to divorce, separation, single parenthood, or death. The current literature lacks research regarding the impact of growing up in a nonintact household during childhood or adolescence for young adults. In recent years, there have been fewer young adults who lived in intact households during their childhood and adolescent years. Arnett's developmental theory is that the major task during young adulthood is developing decision-making skills and accepting oneself. Healthy relationships in early adult life emerge from emotional bonding with early caregivers. The 128 participants in this study were college-aged students, ages 18'24 years, who were enrolled in higher education in a midsize city in the Midwestern United States. In this between-group causal comparative analysis of survey data, the Worthington Autonomy Scale was used to determine whether there were any differences in subdivisions of autonomy in adult college students. College students who lived in intact households during childhood or adolescence had higher levels of autonomy and perceived higher household socioeconomic status when compared to students growing up in nonintact households, with no differences in autonomy based on living with a same-sex or opposite sex parent. This research will increase awareness of the potential for decreased autonomy in college students who lived in nonintact households prior to entering college and may prompt the development of programs and support groups to address autonomy for young adult college students.

The Experience of Parental Conflict in Parallel Parenting Custody Arrangements

2012 December 1900 (has links)
Within Canada, parallel parenting plans have been introduced to manage parental conflict in cases of high conflict divorce (Epstein & Madsen, 2004). Since parallel parenting plans are a relatively novel form of custody order, limited research exists pertaining to their effectiveness and impact on the lives of families. The purpose of this dissertation was to explore the experience of parallel parenting. However, since participants were reluctant to discuss this experience directly, the focus of this dissertation shifted to the experience of conflict. Individual interviews with eight participants (five mothers and three fathers) with direct knowledge or experience with parallel parenting plans volunteered to participate in this qualitative study. Interviews followed a reflexive-dyadic interview model and were analyzed using thematic analysis. Thematic analysis identified three common themes across the cases: (a) Attributions of responsibility: Self versus other; participants attributed responsibility for the parenting conflict to their former partners; (b) Who knows best; participants believed that they, and only they, knew what was best for their child; neither their former partners nor the court system were recognized as being able to accurately judge this; and (c) Desire for a resolution; the participants believed that they were more motivated than their former partners to desist from conflict; their willingness to cooperate was associated with a reduction in conflict and improved the parenting relationship and post-divorce adjustment of their child. The themes held dramatically different meaning across cases depending on the context of their relationships. Overall, participants reported a reduction in conflict over time. However, the reported reduction in conflict was found to vary with the participants’ level of satisfaction with the imposed arrangement, the quality of conflict in the parenting relationship, and subsequent willingness to cooperate with their former partners. How these variables relate to the parallel parenting custody arrangement remains unknown. Difficulties with research on parallel parenting custody arrangements and directions for further research are discussed.
