Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / Energy and environmental concerns warrant reconsideration of operable windows as a means of ventilating and cooling office environments. To design for optimal window use and performance, architects must understand human interaction with operable windows and the factors that influence occupant participation in their thermal environment. This thesis examines workers' personal control of operable windows in their office space through the lens of the following attributes: proximity, orientation, and accessibility to operable windows, office floor height, and the operational methods of windows. Three sites in the Minneapolis metro area were examined through site visits, informalinterviews, collection of physical traces, and a questionnaire. Research data reveal that proximity is the greatest determinant of window use. Other attributes have varying degrees of influence on use of windows. Individual, home and neighborhood factors related to childhood obesity intervention

Obesity is one of the most pressing global population health issues, and importantly one that affects racial/ethnic minorities and those of low socioeconomic status disproportionately. Obesity tracks from childhood into adulthood and is related to serious medical and economic consequences throughout the life course. Childhood obesity is well recognized as a complex and multifaceted problem influenced by broader social, geographic and environmental factors. A social ecological framework that is transdisciplinary is needed to address individual-level influences and choices that lead to energy imbalance, but also to address the complex interactions among home and neighborhood environmental features that provide the context for health-related behavior change. The overall goal of this dissertation is to investigate multilevel factors that could influence outcomes of an intervention program aimed at addressing childhood obesity. Including studies that investigated the use of clear communication strategies to facilitate parents comprehension, home media environment related to change in children weight status and the neighborhood environmental context of families. This dissertation draws upon a social ecological model that acknowledges multiple levels of human interaction with the environment and represents a comprehensive approach to designing, implementing and evaluating interventions that which target multiple influences on health behaviors. The iChoose is a 3-month family-based childhood obesity treatment program developed under a community-based participatory research approach led by the Partnering for Obesity Planning and Sustainability (POPS) Community Advisory Board (CAB). The studies within this dissertation use clear communication evaluation and qualitative feedback from focus groups, intervention outcome data and home environmental surveys, as well as environmental audits of neighborhoods. To investigate multilevel factors could influence intervention outcomes, we used both multiple statistical analytical techniques and a Geographic Information System (GIS) spatial analysis to evaluate the iChoose program. / Ph. Assessing Genetic and Environmental Influence on Traits Associated with Natto Quality

Food grade soybean production is a high value alternative to conventional soybean use. The production of natto, a fermented soyfood, requires soybean cultivars that consistently express specific quality traits over a range of growing environments. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate genetic and environmental influence for natto quality traits to ensure consistent performance. A multi location experiment was conducted in 2006 and 2007 to address the influence of soybean cropping system (double crop vs. full season) and environmental factors on traits associated with natto quality. Two statistical models were used to analyze the effects of planting system and environment on agronomic traits such as yield, maturity, and seed size and natto quality traits such as water absorption, water loss after steaming, seed coat deficiency, and rate of water absorption. Genotype variation was significant for all traits, but genetic differences for water loss after steaming were minimal. Planting system significantly influenced all natto quality traits. Seed coat deficiency and rate of water absorption displayed the most differential response and double crop plantings produced superior characteristics. Genotype à environment interactions were significant for all traits, but they did not confound selecting superior natto cultivars. Significant environment and year effects indicate environmental sensitivity, but genotype rankings rarely changed. The results indicate that genotype was the most important factor controlling the natto quality traits tested. These results suggest breeding for superior natto cultivars is possible but environmental influence must be accounted for and multi environment testing is necessary for genotype natto quality evaluation. / Master of Science

Distribution of Resource Use in an Informal Learning Environment: Using Sensor Technologies to Bring Geography Indoors

Indoor spaces have become increasingly prevalent in human lives. While scholarship in other fields has studied the relationship between humans and the indoors, it has not been readily investigated in Geography. This study draws from prior research in Building Design, Managerial Science, and Education to examine the relationship between building users and resources in indoor spaces. To better understand how users seek resources in an indoor, academic space, this research asks: (1) what spaces and resources do building users value?; and (2) how are their perceptions of value associated with observed measures of occupancy? This research takes place in Goodwin Hall, on the Blacksburg campus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. This research relies on surveys conducted in 2018 as well accelerometer data collected in 2018 to examine the relationship between users' perception and use of resources in informal learning environments. Through quantitative analysis this research tests the ideal free distribution hypothesis. Findings indicate that certain measures of use and value support the ideal free distribution hypothesis. These results help to lay a groundwork for future geographic research in indoor spaces. / Master of Science / Indoor spaces have become increasingly created, used, and occupied by humans. This research studies how humans interact with their indoor environments. Other disciplines, such as Building Design, Managerial Science, and Education have examined how indoor spaces can impact human movement, behavior, and choice. Geography is a spatial discipline (observes how variables affect each other over space) and offers a differing lens to view human-indoor relationships. To better understand how users seek resources in an indoor, academic space, this research asks: (1) what spaces and resources do building users value?; and (2) how are their perceptions of value associated with observed measures of occupancy? Surface characterization of LDEF materials

The NASA Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF), a passive experimental satellite, was placed into low-Earth orbit by the Shuttle Challenger in April 1984. The LDEF spent an unprecedented 69 months in space. The flight and recovery of the LDEF has provided a wealth of information on the long-term space environmental effects of a variety of materials exposed to the low-Earth orbit environment. Surface characterization of LDEF materials included polymers, composites, thermal control paints, and aluminum. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS}, Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and contact angle analysis were used to document changes in both the surface composition and surface chemistry of these materials. Detailed XPS analysis of the polymer systems, such as Kapton®, polyimide polysiloxane copolymers, and fluorinated ethylene propylene thermal blankets on the backside of the LDEF revealed significant changes in both the surface composition and surface chemistry as a result of exposure to the low-Earth orbit environment. Polymer systems such as Kapton®, polyimide polysiloxane copolymers, and polysulfone showed a common trend of decreasing carbon content and increasing oxygen content with respect to the control sample. Carbon ls curve fit XPS analysis of the composite samples, in conjunction with SEM photomicrographs, revealed significant ablation of the polymer matrix resin to expose the carbon fibers of the composite during exposure to the space environment. Surface characterization of anodized aluminum tray clamps, which were located at regular intervals over the entire LDEF frame, has provided the first results to evaluate the extent of contamination with respect to position on the LDEF. The XPS results clearly showed that the amount and state of both silicon and fluorine contamination were directly dependent upon the position of the tray clamp on the LDEF. / M.S.

Arakawa and Gins, radical philosophers of the future, desire to construct life beyond the human condition. Their unique and original contribution to philosophy can be discerned most evidently in their concept of reversible destiny, an innovative response to our mortal condition. ‘We have decided not to die’, their ultimate declaration, is a testament not only to their architecture – an architecture predicated on the notion that death must be combated – but also, and perhaps most importantly, to its ability to teach us to think differently about the future. Even, and perhaps especially, the most fundamental and basic assumptions of our species are deliberately and evocatively called into question. It is this resistance to the present – in learning how not to die, in educating life differently – that will be addressed in this dissertation. The claim made here is that the highly instructive architectural philosophy of Arakawa and Gins produces a positive and useful philosophy of life, which orients us towards a new century of philosophy that operates beyond the human condition.
