Software quality and reliability is a primary concern for successful development organizations. Over the years, researchers have focused on monitoring and controlling quality throughout the software process by helping developers to detect as many faults as possible using different fault based techniques. This thesis analyzed the software quality problem from a different perspective by taking a step back from faults to abstract the fundamental causes of faults. The first step in this direction is developing a process of abstracting errors from faults throughout the software process. I have described the error abstraction process (EAP) and used it to develop error taxonomy for the requirement stage. This thesis presents the results of a study, which uses techniques based on an error abstraction process and investigates its application to requirement documents. The initial results show promise and provide some useful insights. These results are important for our further investigation.

ERROR DETECTION AND CORRECTION -- AN EMPIRICAL METHOD FOR EVALUATING TECHNIQUESRymer, J. W. 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 23-26, 2000 / Town & Country Hotel and Conference Center, San Diego, California / This paper describes a method for evaluating error correction techniques for applicability to the flight
testing of aircraft. No statistical or math assumptions about the channel or sources of error are used. An
empirical method is shown which allows direct “with and without” comparative evaluation of correction
techniques. A method was developed to extract error sequences from actual test data independent of the
source of the dropouts. Hardware was built to allow a stored error sequence to be repetitively applied to
test data. Results are shown for error sequences extracted from a variety of actual test data. The
effectiveness of Reed-Solomon (R-S) encoding and interleaving is shown. Test bed hardware
configuration is described. Criteria are suggested for worthwhile correction techniques and suggestions
are made for future investigation.

This paper studies the error-correcting codes being suitable for the channel existing both the random and burst error. A new error control scheme is given. The scheme is a concatenated coding system using an interleaved Reed-Solomon code with symbols over GF (24) as the outer code and a Viterbi-decoded convolutional code as the inner code. As a result of the computer simulation, it is proved that the concatenated coding system has a output at a very low bit error rate (BER)and can correct a lot of compound error patterns. It is suitable for the serious disturb channel existing both the random and burst error. This scheme will be adopted for a remote control system.

The impact of error awareness on error-related negativity : A review and meta-analysisMunkhammar, Lukas January 2023 (has links)
In this systematic review and meta-analysis, the relationship between error awareness and the amplitude of Error-Related Negativity (ERN), a neural response to errors associated with cognitive control and error monitoring processes, was examined. Five studies published between 2010 and 2020, involving a total of 302 participants, were analyzed. Findings revealed a more pronounced negative amplitude of the ERN for aware errors compared to unaware errors, supporting the Error Detection Theory and Reinforcement Learning Theory. The results did not directly support or contradict the Conflict-Monitoring Theory. These findings underscore the critical role of conscious error detection in modulating ERN responses and adaptive behavioral modifications. However, due to the limited number of included studies and variability in their methodologies, caution is needed in interpreting the results. Future research should aim to validate these findings with larger samples and standardized study designs, while also exploring a more nuanced understanding of error awareness.

This position paper will examine some recent research raising a number of ethical, and tangentially, methodological issues concerning the qualitative study of drug errors within United Kingdom National Health Service hospitals. Reflections on the views and ethical conduct of other qualitative researchers are provided to contextualize the discussion. .¿
The impact of a drug error, and any resultant adverse event can be significant. The human and financial costs are considerable. Establishing an accurate estimation of the frequency of adverse event and reporting rates has been difficult; additionally, methodological weaknesses in medical error research have sometimes caused further difficulties. Unsurprisingly, observational studies and for that matter, a whole range of other methods are now being considered in the quest to establish both understanding and predictability in relation to medical error. Relevance to clinical practice.¿
It is argued here that any participants in medical error research should be treated in a way that takes account of the prevailing culture of health care and, in the United Kingdom, the current ethos of government policy on medical error. This requires gaining informed consent, promoting transparency in method, and providing the opportunity for participants to learn. Effective error researchers can clearly increase the available knowledge in this critical area but ethical considerations and their chosen methods should show an appropriate level of respect for their participants. Carefully implemented qualitative approaches can help realize such respect.
