<p>In this thesis I present and discuss the phenomenon of ethical fading, and its association with biased assessment of a fair action. Ethical fading is an intuitive, self-deceptive, unconscious mechanism by which even morally competent agents are lead to disregard the ethical consequences of a particular choice. In engaging in this psychological mechanism, I argue, agents are also presupposing a biased assessment of entitlement. This biased assessment of fairness is intentionally dubious, and to be found in decision frames and reinforced by contexts. In the final part of the work I present an applied ethics case to show how ethical fading may be a quite prevalent pattern of behavior.</p>

Rate adaptive transmission in cooperative networksKalansuriya, Prasanna 11 1900 (has links)
Cooperative wireless communication uses relays to enhance the capacity and reliability of data transmission. Adaptive transmission is typically used in conventional non-cooperative communications to exploit the time-varying nature of the wireless channel. In this thesis, we combine these two techniques. We consider decode-and-forward (DF) and amplify-and-forward (AF) relays. The wireless environment is modeled by using the Nakagami-m distribution. The achievable channel capacity with rate adaptive transmission is analytically derived for DF and AF cooperative networks. The performance of a DF cooperative network is analyzed with a constant power rate adaptive scheme consisting of a discrete set of transmission modes. The effect of decoding errors on DF cooperative networks is also analyzed. To this end, a new heuristic approximation of the total received signal-to-noise ratio at the destination is developed. This approximation enables simple yet accurate performance analysis. / Communications

Efficient detection and scheduling for MIMO-OFDM systemsLiu, Wei 17 October 2012 (has links)
Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antennas can be exploited to provide high data rate using a limited bandwidth through multiplexing gain. MIMO combined with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) could potentially provide high data rate and high spectral efficiency in frequency-selective fading channels. MIMO-OFDM technology has been widely employed in modern communication systems, such as Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), Long Term Evolution (LTE) and Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX). However, most of the conventional schemes either are computationally prohibitive or underutilize the full performance gain provided by the inherent merits of MIMO and OFDM techniques.
In the first part of this dissertation, we firstly study the channel matrix inversion which is commonly required in various MIMO detection schemes. An algorithm that exploits second-order extrapolation in the time domain is proposed to efficiently reduce the computational complexity. This algorithm can be applied to both linear detection and non-linear detection such as ordered successive interference cancellation (OSIC) while maintaining the system performance. Secondly, we study the complexity reduction for Lattice Reduction Aided Detection (LRAD) of MIMO-OFDM systems. We propose an algorithm that exploits the inherent feature of unimodular transformation matrix that remains the same for relatively highly correlated frequency components. This algorithm effectively eliminates the redundant brute-force lattice reduction iterations among adjacent subcarriers. Thirdly, we analyze the impact of channel coherence bandwidth on two LRAD algorithms. Analytical and simulation results demonstrate that carefully setting the initial calculation interval according to the coherence bandwidth is essential for both algorithms.
The second part of this dissertation focuses on efficient multi-user (MU) scheduling and coordination for the uplink of WLAN that uses MIMO-OFDM techniques. On one hand, conventional MU-MIMO medium access control (MAC) protocols require large overhead, which lowers the performance gain of concurrent transmissions rendered by the multi-packet reception (MPR) capability of MIMO systems. Therefore, an efficient MU-MIMO uplink MAC scheduling scheme is proposed for future WLAN. On the other hand, single-user (SU) MIMO achieves multiplexing gain in the physical (PHY) layer and MU-MIMO achieves multiplexing gain in the MAC layer. In addition, the average throughput of the system varies depending on the number of antennas and users, average payload sizes, and signal-to-noise-ratios (SNRs). A comparison on the performance between SU-MIMO and MU-MIMO schemes for WLAN uplink is hence conducted. Simulation results indicate that a dynamic switch between the SU-MIMO and MU-MIMO is of significance for higher network throughput of WLAN uplink. / Graduation date: 2013

This thesis studies cooperative techniques that rely on femtocell user diversity to improve the downlink communication quality of macrocell users. We analytically analyze and evaluate the achievable performance of these techniques in the downlink of Rayleigh fading channels. We provide an approximation of both the bit-error rate (BER) and the data throughput that macrocell users receive with femtocell user cooperation. Using simulations, we show that under reasonable SNR values, cooperative schemes enhance the performances of macrocells by improving the BER, outage probability, and data throughput of macrocell users significantly when

High data rate applications are the trend in today's wireless technology. W-CDMA standard was designed to support such high data rates of up to 3.84 Mcps. The main purpose of this research was to analyze the feasibility of a fixed-point implementation of the W-CDMA downlink receiver algorithm on a general-purpose digital signal processor (StarCore SC140 by Motorola). The very large instruction word architecture of SC140 core is utilized to generate optimal implementation, to meet the real time timing requirements of the algorithm. The other main aim of this work was to study and evaluate the performance of the W-CDMA downlink structure with incorporated space-time transmit diversity. The effect of the channel estimation algorithm used was extensively studied too.

Outage Capacity and Code Design for Dying ChannelsZeng, Meng 2011 August 1900 (has links)
In wireless networks,
communication links may be subject to random fatal impacts: for example, sensor networks under sudden power losses or cognitive radio networks with unpredictable primary user spectrum occupancy. Under such circumstances, it is critical to quantify how fast and reliably the information can be collected over attacked links. For a single point-to-point channel subject to a random attack, named as a dying channel, we model it as a block-fading (BF) channel with a finite and random channel length. First, we study the outage probability when the coding length K is fixed and uniform power allocation is assumed. Furthermore, we discuss the optimization over K and the power allocation vector PK to minimize the outage probability. In addition, we extend the single point to-point dying channel case to the parallel multi-channel case where each sub-channel is a dying channel, and investigate the corresponding asymptotic behavior of the overall outage probability with two different attack models: the independent-attack case and the m-dependent-attack case. It can be shown that the overall outage probability diminishes to zero for both cases as the number of sub-channels increases if the rate per unit cost is less than a certain threshold. The outage exponents are also studied to reveal how fast the outage probability improves over the number of sub-channels.
Besides the information-theoretical results, we also study a practical coding scheme for the dying binary erasure channel (DBEC), which is a binary erasure channel (BEC) subject to a random fatal failure. We consider the rateless codes and optimize the degree distribution to maximize the average recovery probability. In particular, we first study the upper bound of the average recovery probability, based on which we define the objective function as the gap between the upper bound and the average recovery probability achieved by a particular degree distribution. We then seek the optimal degree distribution by minimizing the objective function. A simple and heuristic approach is also proposed to provide a suboptimal but good degree distribution.

This dissertation demonstrates how the Weltanschauung found in Álvaro Mutis´s oeuvre is profoundly influenced by a late romantic conscience found in the Latin American posvanguardia generation (1920 – 1940). Melancholy –as late modern affective condition- and fading of the subject –as narrative and aesthetic imaginary- are two central figures in his fictional universe.
As a consequence of this, some of the heroes and topics in Mutis’s oeuvre are in dialogue with the main topics of the first literary movement in Hispanic America, Modernism. Some of them are: a religious ambiance in their prose, hedonism, cosmopolitanism, decadentism, Latin American landscape as entropy and a fractured self.
There is a narrative logic in the literary corpus analyzed –which one can extend to Mutis’ s oeuvre. The hero, before starting his adventure, begins a psychological phenomenology called “fading of the subject”, which is a symbolic process that affects not only his stability as a hero but also the enterprise to which he is committed; all this thanks to his “melancholic condition”. This emotional process begins by revealing poetic images of internal destruction, amalgamation and death, which the hero transfers to the external world. In some of the texts analyzed this process concludes by producing death and devastation (El Húsar, La muerte del estratega), in others there is an urgent need to a symbolic resignification (Amirbar) that allows the hero to survive and start a new adventure.
This “spiritual condition” is something Maqroll - Mutis’ main character- knows well when someone asks him about his precarious physical condition, “The tropical fevers...I have them already!” (Amirbar 491)

Asymptotic Analysis of Interference in Cognitive Radio NetworksYaobin, Wen 05 April 2013 (has links)
The aggregate interference distribution in cognitive radio networks is studied in a rigorous and analytical way using the popular Poisson point process model. While a number of results are available for this model for non-cognitive radio networks, cognitive radio networks present extra levels of difficulties for the analysis, mainly due to the exclusion region around the primary receiver, which are typically addressed via various ad-hoc approximations (e.g., based on the interference cumulants) or via the large-deviation analysis. Unlike the previous studies, we do not use here ad-hoc approximations but rather obtain the asymptotic interference distribution in a systematic and rigorous way, which also has a guaranteed level of accuracy at the distribution tail. This is in contrast to the large deviation analysis, which provides only the (exponential) order of scaling but not the outage probability itself. Unlike the cumulant-based analysis, our approach provides a guaranteed level of accuracy at the distribution tail. Additionally, our analysis provides a number of novel insights. In particular, we demonstrate that there is a critical transition point below which the outage probability decays only polynomially but above which it decays super-exponentially. This provides a solid analytical foundation to the earlier empirical observations in the literature and also reveals what are the typical ways outage events occur in different regimes. The analysis is further extended to include interference cancelation and fading (from a broad class of distributions). The outage probability is shown to scale down exponentially in the number of canceled nearest interferers in the below-critical region and does not change significantly in the above-critical one. The proposed asymptotic expressions are shown to be accurate in the non-asymptotic regimes as well.

Transmission of vector quantization over a frequency-selective Rayleigh fading CDMA channelNguyen, Son Xuan 19 December 2005
Recently, the transmission of vector quantization (VQ) over a code-division multiple access (CDMA) channel has received a considerable attention in research community. The complexity of the optimal decoding for VQ in CDMA communications is prohibitive for implementation, especially for systems with a medium or large number of users. A suboptimal approach to VQ decoding over a CDMA channel, disturbed by additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), was recently developed. Such a suboptimal decoder is built from a soft-output multiuser detector (MUD), a soft bit estimator and the optimal soft VQ decoders of individual users. <p>Due to its lower complexity and good performance, such a decoding scheme is an attractive alternative to the complicated optimal decoder. It is necessary to extend this decoding scheme for a frequency-selective Rayleigh fading CDMA channel, a channel model typically seen in mobile wireless communications. This is precisely the objective of this thesis. <p>Furthermore, the suboptimal decoders are obtained not only for binary phase shift keying (BPSK), but also for M-ary pulse amplitude modulation (M-PAM). This extension offers a flexible trade-off between spectrum efficiency and performance of the systems. In addition, two algorithms based on distance measure and reliability processing are
introduced as other alternatives to the suboptimal decoder. <p>Simulation results indicate that the suboptimal decoders studied in this thesis also performs very well over a frequency-selective Rayleigh fading CDMA channel.
