On the Performance Analysis of Digital Communication Systems Perturbed by Non-Gaussian Noise and Interference

The Gaussian distribution is typically used to model the additive noise affecting communication systems. However, in many cases the noise cannot be modeled by a Gaussian distribution. In this thesis, we investigate the performance of different communication systems perturbed by non-Gaussian noise. Three families of noise are considered in this work, namely the generalized Gaussian noise, the Laplace noise/interference, and the impulsive noise that is modeled by an α-stable distribution. More specifically, in the first part of this thesis, the impact of an additive generalized Gaussian noise is studied by computing the average symbol error rate (SER) of one dimensional and two dimensional constellations in fading environment. We begin by the simple case of two symbols, i.e. binary phase shift keying (BPSK) constellation. From the results of this constellation, we extended the work to the average SER of an M pulse amplitude modulation (PAM). The first 2 − D constellation is the M quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) (studied for two geometric shapes, namely square and rectangular), which is the combination of two orthogonal PAM signals (in-phase and quadrature phase PAM). In the second part, the system performance of a circular constellation, namely M phase shift keying (MPSK) is studied in conjunction with a Laplace noise with independent noise components. A closed form and an asymptotic expansion of the SER are derived for two detectors, maximum likelihood and minimum distance detectors. Next, we look at the intra cell interference of a full duplex cellular network which is shown to follow a Laplacian distribution with dependent, but uncorrelated, complex components. The densities of that interference are expressed in a closed form in order to obtain the SER of several communication systems (BPSK, PAM, QAM, and MPSK). Finally, we study the statistics of the α-stable distribution. Those statistics are expressed in closed form in terms of the Fox H function and used to get the SER of BPSK, PAM, and QAM constellations. An approximation and an asymptotic expansion for high signal to noise ratio are presented also and their efficiency is proved using Monte Carlo simulations. It is worth mentioning that all the error rates presented in this work are averaged over a generalized flat fading, namely the extended generalized K, which has the ability to capture most of the known fading distribution. Many special cases are treated and simpler closed form expressions of the probability of error are derived and compared to some previous reported results.

This diploma thesis follows the degradation of inkjet print by ultraviolet radiation and ozone effect for different types of papers. Colour test charts for the evaluation of accelerated ageing effect of ultraviolet light and gas fading were designed. These test charts were printed by dye-based inks on selected receiving media and exposed to ozone-enriched environment, UV radiation and their combination. The colorimetric values L* a* b* were calculated from spectral data of all patches of the test charts. The ozone effect on the prints was evaluated in the terms of total colour difference and dye concentration. The degradation of dye caused by ozone was observed also in a long-term period, after the contact of sample with ozone was terminated. Results of printed samples accelerated ageing by UV radiation and those that were influenced by the ozone effect were evaluated in the same way. It was found out that UV radiation and ozone treatment have a different effect on the degradation of dyes. The degradation rate is also strongly influenced by the receiving layer composition of papers used for inkjet printing. Also the catalytic effect of dyes was evaluated.

This thesis is focused on the effect of ozone on ink-jet prints. The knowledge about print technologies, materials for ink-jet printing, influence of environmental factors on the prints degradation and the methods of print lifetime estimation are discussed in the theoretical part of the thesis. Test-charts of 108 samples of C, M, Y primary colours and their overprints were prepared. I used two types of papers designed for ink-jet printing. These samples were exposed the effect of ozone in various concentrations to perform an accelerated aging experiment. Optical density values, La*b* coordinates, colour difference values were calculated from the measured spectral data. Changes of colours of the ink due to ozone exposure were determined and discussed. The validity of the reciprocal law due to ozone exposure was studied, too. The reciprocal behaviour was not confirmed for both types of the studied papers.

Subject of this thesis is elemental description of DVB digital television and digitalization process of its terrestrial transmission according to DVB-T standard. The thesis characterizes in detail RF transmission channels used for wireless distribute of television. These channels ale mathematically described and their effect to OFDM signal is simulated in the MATLAB environment. It was created application with graphical user interface by this environment. Using simple setting of DVB-T and transmission channel parameters in the application user can simulate selective fading. Results of simulations with various settings are compared and analysed.

This thesis focuses on analysis, classification, simulation and assessment of the signal fading in the scope of terrestrial digital television reception. This is a phenomenon associated with signal multipath propagation caused by the reflection, dispersion and diffraction of electromagnetic waves in interaction with relief and artificial obstacles. Wave propagation issues in a specific landscape are not the central theme of this project. Signal transmission between the transmitter and receiver is defined by channel profile models. Attention is directed not only to static reception but also to portable and mobile reception. Simulation of this phenomenon takes place in the software environment of MATLAB. In the framework of this project program fundament was created which allows simulate the signal processing across the entire communication chain of television broadcasting, including its transmitting and receiving parts.

This Master thesis is focused on detailed description of the DVB-T2 system. This work deals with the description of the particular parts of models and with typical RF transmission channels for fixed and mobile reception. In order to simulate the impact of the fading transmission channels on the transmitted signal there was developed an appropriate application in MATLAB. The graphic user interface of this application allows set the transmission parameters of DVB-T2 and the parameters of the transmission channels. Results of simulations with various settings are evaluated and compared with the results, obtained from the DVB-T measurements.

Standard DVB-SH is a hybrid system that adds to terrestrial broadcasting satellite connection. Signal can extend by various environments, therefore it are defined models transmission channel with defined parameters. Simulation of the transmission in both channel are realized in user application created in MATLAB. Finally, obtained results are evaluated and discussed.

Secrecy Capacity of Cooperative Transmission with Opportunistic Relaying Scheme

The usage of wireless communication has increased over the past few years. Most wired communications are replaced by wireless communication for ease of use. Wireless communication transfers confidential information like personal information and credentials between two entities. We can't probably say that it is safe to send this information via wireless communication. As more data is sent, more attacks happen to steal the data. Hence, it is necessary to implement secure methods to transfer the data between source and receiver. In this communication channel, we use secrecy capacity as a parameter to measure how data is sent securely between source and destination. Generally, to achieve high system performance, the information is sent with low power, but this reduces the signal efficiency at the receiver. So, in this thesis, we have implemented cooperative transmission to increase the efficiency of low power signals by adding the relays between source and destination. This thesis consists of two relays. The relay that obtains the maximum signal-to-noise ratio is selected for the primary communication link. The other relay sends the signal to the eavesdropper to confuse the eavesdropper. In this thesis, we have derived the mathematical expression for SNR at receiver eavesdropper, and also we have derived a word for outage probability and secrecy capacity. Then, we simulated the Matlab code to obtain results on how the secrecy capacity affects by changing the various parameters like path loss exponent and fading severity parameter and suggests which environment is better to maintain high secrecy capacity. We also analysed the system performance and secrecy capacity in the presence of eavesdropper as well.

The Effects of Script-Fading Procedures and Extinction Procedures on the Variability of Mand Frames Used by Young Children with Autism

A primary deficit seen in many children with autism, particularly those with limited verbal repertoires, is repetitive and rote verbal behavior. This type of repetitive or rote verbal behavior can be stigmatizing and may severely limit access to primary reinforcers. Therefore, it may be beneficial to attempt to increase response variability in verbal behavior demonstrated by children with autism. Previous researchers have focused their efforts on examining response variability in motor behavior or existing verbal behavior, rather than new or recently taught verbal behavior. A potentially complementary intervention for teaching new verbal interactions is the use of scripts and script fading procedures. However, the effect of scripts and script fading procedures on the response variability of verbal behavior remains unknown. Thus, the present study attempted to answer several research questions. First, we examined the effects on extinction on response variability of mand frames used by young children with autism that exhibit limited manding repertoires. Second, we examined the effects of script training on the variability of mand frames, and finally, the effects of extinction after teaching a variety of mand frames with children with autism. Results demonstrated that (a) extinction prior to any teaching was not successful in increasing response variability, (b) teaching multiple mand frames in a successive pattern did not increase response variability of mand frames for any of the participants, (c) extinction after teaching additional mand frames increased response variability for two of the three participants, and (d) a multiple script presentation intervention increased response variability of mand frames for one participant.
