  • The Global ETD Search service is a free service for researchers to find electronic theses and dissertations. This service is provided by the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations.
Our metadata is collected from universities around the world. If you manage a university/consortium/country archive and want to be added, details can be found on the NDLTD website.

Ethnic-specific Reproductive Behavior in Independent Kazakhstan

Kan, Maxim January 2012 (has links)
This study examines the risks of first, second and third birth in Kazakhstan since the collapse of the Soviet Union through general and ethnic-specific perspectives. Special attention is paid to the economic recovery time after 2000. The most remarkable finding is the similarity of the paces of first, second and third birth risks among the major ethnicities of Kazakhstan across the time periods. In particular, continued declines of first birth risks and slight increases of second birth risks occurred in tandem for all ethnic groups during the economic recovery period after the turn of the century.

A multivariate analysis of tree species influence on forest floor fertility /

Pelletier, Bernard, 1964- January 1993 (has links)
The objective of this study was to assess tree species influence on forest floor fertility in a mixed forest stand using Redundancy Analysis (RDA). Eighty microsites were located in a beech-hemlock-red maple forest. Forest floor was analyzed for thirteen variables; total N, P, K, Ca and Mg, extractable Ca, Mg and K, mineralizable N (NH$ sb{4+}$), basal microbial respiration (CO$ sb2$), pH, thickness and bulk density. The influence of seven tree species was calculated as a function of tree diameter and distance from each microsite. Spatial patterns were detected by using correlograms and incorporated in a variation-partitioning model with trend surface analysis. Tree species, microtopography, and spatial structure explained 53% of the total variation in forest floor data. The fraction explained by tree species alone (16%) was studied with a RDA ordination biplot. The main source of variation in the soil data was related mainly to the opposite effects of American beech and eastern hemlock on calcium while most of the other species had a beneficial effect on soil fertility. This study showed the potential of RDA as a tool for studying the role of tree species in mixed forests.

Concentrations of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) in the plasma and milk of pasture-fed dairy cows in early lactation

Obese, Frederick Yeboah Unknown Date (has links) (PDF)
The involvement of IGFs and IGFBPs in mediating the effects of nutrition on the reproductive system in pasture-fed dairy cows and the requirement to improve assays for the determination of IGFs and IGFBPs in biological samples provided the stimulus for this thesis. The objectives of the studies were to validate a commercial ELISA to measure the concentrations of IGF-I in the plasma and milk samples from pasture-fed Holstein-Friesian dairy cows and investigate the variation in IGF-I and IGFBP-3 concentrations in blood and milk as well as investigate possible relationships between plasma concentrations of IGF-I and fertility.
