Pastoral counselling of persons with homosexual tendencies in a heterosexual marriage / by Louis Antonie Gerber

Gerber, Louis Antonie January 2007 (has links)
The occurrence of marriages failing as a result of one member of the couple having a homosexual relationship has increased since the rewriting of the law on human rights. This resulted in a heightened need for pastoral care of members of the family that were affected by this tendency. Of cardinal importance to this study and in light of the constant debate about homosexuality in the church, a Scriptural foundation is found in the handling in cases of marriage breaking up as a result of infidelity with a homosexual partner. The Praxis model of Zerfass forms the framework in which a new pastoral therapy is sought. As background to the study an investigation is conducted to find the possible causes and resulting effects of homosexual tendencies in the areas of psychology, physiology, and social anthropology. An empirical research form part of the investigation into a practical formulating of a suitable guideline for pastoral care. With the insight gained from the research, a practice theory is developed to fill the gap with a new and appropriate approach in giving pastoral guidance to all parties who are affected when one of the members of the married couple experiences same sex attraction (SSA) or get involved in a homosexual relationship. / Thesis (M.A. (Pastoral))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2008.

The effects of various methods of presenting information on attitudes toward homosexuality

Freeland, Leah J. January 1986 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a film on homosexuality and a presentation by the Gay Alliance on attitude change toward homosexuality. A review of the literature indicated that a class which offers eduction on homosexuality results in a more positive attitude toward homosexuality. It was also found that participants are less tolerant toward homosexuality after viewing an explicit, erotic film of two hmosexuals. Participants were 58 male and 113 female students enrolled in one of three Introductory to Psychology classes. All were given the Kite Attitude Toward Homosexuality Scale and a demographic questionnaire during their usual class times. One week later a filmstrip on homosexuality was shown to one class and the Gay Alliance gave a presentation to a second class. The third class was not given any additional information on homosexuality. Two weeks later all participants completed the Kite Scale and the questionnaire again. A 2x3 Analysis of Covariance showed there was no significant difference between groups or gender. A stepwise multiple regression indicated the best predictor for attitude change was if the subject had read something other than a textbook on homosexuality. A stepwise multiple regression also found the best predictors of a positive attitude toward homosexuality was if the participant had a friend who was homosexual, if the participant was female, and if the participant had a relative who was homosexual. The explanation for the results found included a discussion on AIDS, the low number of male subjects in the two experimental groups, and the fact that there were some difficulties with the group which viewed the filmstrip.

A comparative study between male homosexuals' and heterosexuals' perceived paternal acceptance-rejection in childhood

Inman, Michael Parker January 1978 (has links)
The present study examined the responses of male homosexuals' and heterosexuals' perceptions of their parent's behavior as a function of the subject's sexual orientation. The research population consisted of 117 male homosexuals and 56 male heterosexuals. The homosexual sample was derived from a nationwide sample, while the heterosexual sample was primarily a university population. Three tasks were administered to each subject in both groups. Each respondent first completed a personal information questionnaire which solicited data on age, income, and family background: In addition, the homosexual sample completed a. personal information section involving more specific information on sexual behavior and preferences. The. second task involved the Children's Report of Parental Behavior Inventory, an instrument designed to measure an individual's perceptions of his mother's and father's behavior toward himself (the individual). Subjects evaluated their parents as they would have at age 16. The third task involved a measurement of neurotic personality traits as defined by the Maudsley Personality inventory.Numerous conclusions were made. relative to homosexual parental relationships and later relationships of a sexual nature. A major finding of the study was that the homosexual sample was less neurotic than the heterosexual population used as a norm. The following general conclusions were drawn from the findings of the study:1. Neurosis is a personality disorder not significantly associated with homosexuality per se.2. Parental acceptance and autonomy may be key factors in promoting non-neurotic personality development in early childhood.3. Homsexuals do no view themselves as meeting culturally prescribed standards of the masculine sex-role.4. The majority of homosexuals engage in frequent promisuous sexual relations with a large number of partners5. Promiscuous sexual behavior is more related to relationship needs than to purely sexual needs.6. Homosexual behavior can best be viewed as "sexual acting-out" behavior which attempts to "repair" or meet early childhood strivings for paternal love and affection needs.7. The psychodynamics in the etiology of homosexuality are similar to those in the development of heterosexuality, with reversed poles. The male child, having supressed his heterosexual desires for the mother because of her own repressed incestuous inhibitions, seeks a reparitive relationshp with a detached or hostile father through a vicarious relationship with the mother.8. Parents who wish to facilitate heterosexual development in their sons should foster an affectionate, accepting relationship with the son in which the mother and father have a good love relationship with one another.
