An investigation of the possibilities within the limitations of prefabrication in housing today

McBride, John David January 1970 (has links)
This thesis is the development of a design program. Current housing systems, while offering a shelter, provide very little more in terms of differentiation and variation of units, or any selection on the part of the resident. This is termed the minimum solution and can, result in monotonous housing developments, discontent among inhabitants, and in general, dislike for "prefabricated houses.” But, through re-evaluation of design priorities, and developing the maximum solution, which does contain many variations and a wide selection for the owner, an industrialized system of building can offer each person a unique unit and in turn, make "prefabricated houses" desirable to live in. / M. Passive solar homes and their interiors: homeowner attitudes

Ross, Patricia D. January 1982 (has links)
This research investigated homeowner rationale for, and feelings about, living in passive solar homes. Satisfaction, use, and extent of involvement with the home and solar features were determined. Twenty-eight owners of passive solar homes from the state of Virginia participated in this study. Data were collected by a hand-delivered questionnaire which was self-administered. Frequency and percentage distributions were calculated to describe the sample and characterize the findings from the study. Findings that were of a significant nature indicated that a vast majority of respondents felt that saving money on fuel bills was a major factor in their decision to live in passive solar homes. Over three-fourths of the homeowners sought information about solar energy utilization in order to make an educated choice. Over half were responsible for the building or modification of the homes and were directly involved with the functioning of their solar systems. All of these solar features were rated OK-to-high as functional units. Slightly more than half of the homeowners described unanticipated benefits as well as complaints related to their homes. Savings on fuel bills resulted in feelings of independence from utility companies for many of the respondents. Several were also pleased with their new awareness of nature and the weather. Areas of dissatisfaction were most often related to construction techniques. Others noted that cooling in the summer and heating in the winter posed problems. Almost half of the respondents reported changes in room use in their current residence as compared to previous non-solar homes. There appears to be a trend toward a more functional design, and multipurpose use of rooms incorporated into passive solar homes. Over half had a thermal mass in the floor and were satisfied with the hard floor surface. A majority had not purchased specific furnishings that they felt would perform well in their solar home and have had no problem with fading. Overall, homeowners were satisfied with the general interior, exterior, and overall features of their passive solar homes. / Master of Science

Inomhusmiljö i miljöcertifierade skolbyggnader : En jämförande studie av upplevd inomhusmiljö i två miljöcertifierade och två konventionella skolbyggnader

Sundström, Viktoria January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this report was to find out if there were any differences in how the indoor environment was experienced in environmentally certified school buildings compared with similar conventional buildings. For that two certified school buildings, Vegaskolan in Vännäs and Hedlunda preschool in Umeå was compared with two conventional preschools in Umeå, Solbacken and Skattelden, in terms of how the indoor environment was experienced. This was done using a questionnaire and interviews. The results of the survey showed that Vegaskolan had the lowest percentage among the staff that was bothered by various environmental factors, while Hedlunda preschool had the largest share. Hedlunda also had the highest percentage amongst the staff with health problems. All four buildings surveyed, however, had smaller percentages who were disturbed by noise than preschools in general, and the environmentally certified buildings had an even lower percentage. If this is due to the certification is however difficult to say. Since there were more differences between the two certified buildings, it is difficult to draw general conclusions depending on the building type. Most of the differences showed in this study do not depend on the certification of the buildings, but of other causes. However the environmentally certified buildings are more complex than the conventional buildings, with more things that can go wrong. Therefore it requires more monitoring of the indoor environment after the building is put into use, as well as more information to operators and users in order to prevent adverse health effects, which seems to be the case at Hedlunda.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Claudia Bredarioli.pdf: 563860 bytes, checksum: 44d14d9d42a6a75c750ab6064e0fa072 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008-04-02 / In a scenario formed by the globalization process emerged from the technological progress, the Internet access in private places (lan-houses) portrays a movement that apparently begins to create new paths in the search for economic and social inclusion of youths from poor neighbourhoods of large Brazilian cities. To identify in what way or until what point attending lan-houses leads to this process of inclusion is one of the challenges that communication researchers face. These places have become socializing agents that must be studied in particular because they lack characteristics of formally organized institutions such as school, family and Church; and therefore allow the appearance of new cultural practices brought by these contemporary mediatic supports which take over new social urban spaces. In this study we attempt to further understand the issue by elaborating a cultural and mediatic consumption map of this youth – which the results point out the existence of a large mass of functional Internet users, still unable to completely grasp new technologies or take advantage of day-to-day possibilities on the net in the constitution of citizenship.
