The domestic uncanny : co-habiting with ghosts

The 'haunted home' has enjoyed a long-standing position as a motif within society, crossing a span of narratives, from anecdotal local stories shared informally between family and friendship networks, to the established Gothic traditions of literature and film. This project uniquely examines the ways in which people who believe their homes to be haunted negotiate the experience of co-habiting with ghosts. It is a qualitative study which has applied a mix of creative methodologies to a number of in-depth case studies in England and Wales. Geographers and researchers in related disciplines have recently expressed interest in the idea of ghosts or haunting, but have tended to focus upon public metropolitan spaces, and to employ the ghost as a metaphor or social figure. In contrast, this project contributes to a growing literature on the material and immaterial geographies of the home, the intangible and affective aspects of everyday life within the particular context of the domestic interior. The project explores the insights uncanny events experienced within this space reveal about people's embodied, emotional, spatial and temporal relationships with 'home' as both physical place and as a set of ideals. It studies the way in which people negotiate experiences which appear to lack rational or natural explanation, and the interpretative narratives employed to explain them. It suggests ways in which different forms of belief influence interpretations of uncanny events. It also suggests ways in which inhabitants of haunted homes negotiate the co-habitation with ghosts through a number of strategies which reinforce their own subjectivity in the face of potential encroachment into their private space.

This general level was related mainly to the building types which respond to extreme external conditions (such as topography,climate or social economic conditions) The specific level of terrace houses as an example of buildings of that kind and their adaptation process and mechanisms to the external conditions as rational, systematic development process. The S.A.R. approach serves as a background reference for this study. Some proposals were made to adopt the S.A.R design methodology in the case of terrace houses. The 'Morphogical Box' method which was developed by F. Zwicky for the systematic generation of alternative planning solutions was modified and applied in the classification and analysis purposes as well as in structuring the planning and design process to accommodate different external conditions and changing design objectives. Sometimes the architect must take a more humble, less visible role. Participation of the people who inhabit a place is key to maintaining the environment. For such participation to occur, an architect must enable inhabitants to exercise a wide play of choice in the use of a built environment and of change in the adaptation of its physical structure. Such characteristics of a place contribute to its tractability. The objective of this thesis is to outline design characteristics which contribute to the tractability of housing, using the rowhouse type as a spring point. This study is grounded in a behavioral perspective. Dimensional criteria are generated using behavior patterns, in an attempt to avoid stereotypes inherent in defining household activities by rooms. Activity settings and use scenarios are vehicles for examining two instructive examples of housing. Relevant characteristics are summarized and employed in the design of rowhouses for a Cambridge site, to simulate future conditions as scarcity of natural resources brings about concern for intensification of urban land use. / by Charles Allen Craig. / M.Arch.

The adaptable dwelling is intended to respond to change as a fundamental condition of the human life-cycle, and offers choices to its inhabitants when changes occur. The adaptable dwelling is intended to provide an alternative to either moving as a result of change or to tolerating a space/need mis-match. Adaptability inevitably requires some overprovision of space and/or services within the dwelling which, in turn, requires increased expenditures. Thus, a major obstacle to providing adaptable housing - quite aside from strictly architectural concerns - is an economic one. A major contention of this Thesis is that adaptability will be realized only when it is built within an economic framework that will support/justify the necessary overprovision of space and/or services. The proposed economic framework in this Thesis is based on the notion of income-generation. The dwelling is conceived as a collection of areas that the inhabitants can combine - and continuously recombine - in a variety of ways such that the inhabitants can rent to others those areas which they do not need for themselves at any given time. In this way, overprovided space and/or services can generate operating income for the inhabitant which can offset the additional expenditures required for adaptability. The architectural intent of this Thesis is to design prototypical adaptable dwellings based on these social and economic notions. The adaptable dwelling is designed to function usefully as a residence for one, two or three families - at the option of the controlling inhabitant. A philosophy of home : a study on an alternative experience of domesticity

The major objective of this thesis is to provide an alternative to the predominant model of the Western urban home, arguing that it is more detrimental than beneficial to its inhabitants. In order to achieve this, it first explores the development of home through a genealogical analysis. It then considers the concepts with which it is traditionally connected, such as those of identity, safety, privacy and satisfaction, supporting that the idealised home hides numerous issues of concern (e.g. class and sex inequalities, physical and psychological violence). In order to form a more comprehensive picture, the thesis draws on different philosophical approaches discussing the idea of home, while it explores a variety of contemporary habitation and home-making practices (e.g. smart and second homes, new technologies inside the house, home and consumerism). The normative and overly-idealised domestic model, promoted in Western urban societies, is presented as detrimental both on a personal and on a social level. Therefore, alternatives are explored in Adorno's 'Hotel Room', Jameson's 'Dirty Realism' and Deleuze and Guattari's 'Nomadology'. The lack of viability characterising the abovementioned proposals leads to the examination of the Deleuzoguattarian concept of the Body without Organs; the home as a BwO provides the contemporary agents with the tools to reconstruct an autonomous space where they can recreate their personal discourse and influence the social ground accordingly. Through the analysis of home this thesis explores how and why it has been appropriated by systemic forces and highlights a very serious issue: the fact that our personal space is no longer personal. Simultaneously, a common concern of feminist and post-structuralist background is addressed regarding the process of selfredefinition and the ways to approach it. The response entails a reconstructed autonomous home with a respective influence on the public sphere.

A Casa dos Sonhos, objeto desta pesquisa, é uma casa ideal. Ao longo do seu ciclo de vida, cada pessoa vai construindo sua própria experiência humana, seus valores e seus símbolos, a partir dos conhecimentos que ela própria vai selecionando para si, de tudo aquilo que o universo lhe oferece. Ao longo da vida, no seu dia-a-dia, as pessoas vão experimentando necessidades, que geram anseios e aspirações. Desse complexo sistema de símbolos, valores, anseios, aspirações e necessidades começa a surgir a idealização de espaços adequados para a realização de cada uma das atividades cotidianas. São aspirações nem sempre bem definidas, independentes umas das outras, às vezes inconciliáveis. Empreender a produção de uma casa sob medida é, sem dúvida, uma tarefa extremamente complexa. Ainda que muitos se resignem a adquirir pronta a sua casa própria, porquê cada ser humano parece sempre desejar criar a sua própria casa, sob medida para seus valores, suas aspirações e suas necessidades? Utilizando meios e métodos da Avaliação Pós-Ocupação (APO) do Ambiente Construído, que considera fundamentalmente o ponto de vista dos usuários, esta pesquisa investiga as motivações e o processo de produção de uma residência idealizada, planejada e realizada por uma família, sob medida para as suas necessidades, as suas aspirações, os seus valores e os seus símbolos. Este trabalho se fundamenta em entrevistas realizadas com membros de trinta famílias que produziram a sua Casa dos Sonhos, em Alphaville, um complexo residencial, empresarial e comercial situado na Região Metropolitana da Capital do Estado de São Paulo. / The Dream Home that is the purpose of this research is an ideal house. Through the human life cycle, every human being builds its own human experience, values, and symbols from the achievements that each one selects from everything the universe offers. Along their life, through the day-by-day activities, people experience and realize needs that generate expectations and desires. From this complex set of symbols values and needs emerges the idealization of adequate space to perform each one of the day-by-day activities. Most of the time, these needs are not quite clear and works independently and also frequently are not compatible. Entrepreneurs a tailor made home is a very complex task. Although most of the people have to acquire shelf houses, why everyone desires to create their own tailor made dream houses that reach their values, symbols, expectations and needs? Where comes this desire for a personalized home from? Using methods and techniques of Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE), which considers fundamentally users point of view, this research investigates motivation and the production process of an idealized, planned and built house by a family, intending to fulfill their needs, desires, values and symbols. This work is based on research and interviews with 30 families that have built their own dream home in Alphaville, a residential complex located on the suburban area of the city of São Paulo - Brazil.
