The slug flow pattern is characterized by the alternating passage of liquid slugs trailed by elongated gas bubbles. This work develops an experimental and numerical study in slug flow regime occurring in a 90 degree pipe bend. The pipe bend allows the transition from upward vertical flow to horizontal flow in a curve with inner radius of 410 mm and inside diameter of 26 mm. The experimental set up allows the measurement of the slug flow properties at the inlet and outlet of the pipe bend. The quantities measured are: bubble's nose velocity, bubble and slug lengths, the frequency of passage and the pressure drop. A numerical slug tracking model is employed to capture the changes of the slugs features during the vertical to horizontal transition. The modeling efforts concentrate on the effects of the change of direction on: the gravity force, liquid slug aeration and on liquid film thickness surrounding the elongated gas bubbles. The numerical results compare favorably against the experimental data / Mestrado / Termica e Fluidos / Mestre em Engenharia Mecânica

Impact of Piping Materials on Water Quality in Tegucigalpa, Honduras

Cerrato, Jose Manuel 28 September 2005 (has links)
The possible effects of pipe materials on drinking water quality have been analyzed in the distribution system of the water treatment plant of "La La Concepciónâ " in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. "La La Concepciónâ " is a surface water reservoir experiencing biogeochemical cycling of manganese. Black water problems have been reported in the distribution system since 1998. An evaluation of the potential influence that PVC and iron pipes could have on the concentration of iron and manganese in drinking water, the effects caused by the presence of manganese in PVC and iron pipe surfaces, and residual chlorine and Pb concentrations in the distribution system was performed. The sampled neighborhoods received an intermittent service. Water was suspended for 8 hours every day due to water quantity problems in the city. Water and pipe samples were obtained for PVC and galvanized iron pipes because these constitute the majority of the infrastructure used for distribution systems in Honduras. Thermodynamic and kinetic conditions for possible manganese oxidation by chlorine and dissolved oxygen in the distribution system were also evaluated. As expected, total Fe concentrations were greater for first flush conditions from the iron pipe. Water samples obtained from the PVC pipe showed higher total Mn concentrations and more black color than those obtained from the iron pipe for both first flush and continuous flow conditions. Residual chlorine decayed relatively fast along the sampled section of the distribution system. Pb concentrations were detected on water samples obtained from PVC for first flush and continuous flow and on iron pipe for first flush. Preliminary experiments showed that manganese-oxidizing and -reducing bacteria were present in the walls of both PVC and iron pipes. Higher numbers of colony-forming microorganisms were recovered from iron (30-fold more) compared to PVC pipe sections. However, the majority of isolates from the PVC biofilm (8 of 10, 80 %) were capable of Mn-oxidation while only 35 % (11 of 31) of isolates from the iron biofilm sample demonstrated Mn-oxidation. This research demonstrates the importance of the different interactions between water and the infrastructure used for its supply in producing safe drinking water. / Master of Science

An Optimization Study of an Intermittent-Flow Multistage Fluidized Ion Exchange Column with Fluid Diode Downcomers

Egan, Stephen Martin 10 1900 (has links)

An optimization study of an intermittent-flow multistage fluidized ion exchange column was performed using a stochastic approximation method. A new type of downcomer, a fluid diode, was designed and employed to alleviate liquid bypassing through the downcomer. The well known ion exchange system, H⁺/Na⁺ exchange on Dowex 50W resin, was used in this work.

The volumetric efficiency of the system was optimized with regard to certain column and diode parameters. A maximum volumetric efficiency of 71.8 hr⁻¹ was obtained for the following conditions:

average liquid flowrate = 3661 ml/min ;

resin flowrate = 56.1 gm/min ;

plate spacing 11.43 cm ;

lateral diode displacement= 0.794 cm.

Experiments have shown that a 78.2% increase in volumetric efficiency was achieved by use of the fluidic diode downcomers.
/ Thesis / Master of Engineering (ME)

[en] NUMERICAL SIMULATION OF A GAS-LIQUID MIXER FOR PUMPING STATIONS / [pt] SIMULAÇÃO NUMÉRICA DE UM MISTURADOR GÁS-LÍQUIDO PARA ESTAÇÕES DE BOMBEIO

LEONARDO CHAGAS CARBONE 26 January 2016 (has links)
[en] The offshore oil production is increasingly using pumping equipment at the seabed for production of wells at long distances from production units. Most of these devices have difficulty to operate in the presence of gas, especially in slug flow conditions, where the pump suction s void fraction can vary significantly. This problem limits the equipment s range of operation. One way to minimize the effects of slugging and thus enlarge the operation range of these devices is to use flow mixers at the pump s suction, which helps to ensure the operation even in the presence of large gas bubbles. Therefore, the design and prediction of the behavior of this type of equipment are essential for proper operation of subsea pumping systems. At the present work, the efficiency of a type of flow mixer to provide uniform void fractions at its outlet is numerically investigated, with the two fluid model. Different geometric configurations are analyzed and the influence of intake flow of both phases is discussed. The methodology is validated through comparison of the pressure drop through the flow mixer with available experimental data, where good agreement was observed. The numerical model also shows that a buffer of liquid is maintained inside the equipment and the gas is forced to disperse in the liquid stream to exit the mixer. The mixer s behavior in the presence of slugs is also investigated. Finally, a new geometry is proposed, which seems to be more efficient to avoid flow s intermittencies.

[en] Gas-liquid intermittent flows can be found in many engineering applications, such as oil production lines and nuclear reactors cooling systems. The detailed knowledge of this flow pattern is necessary for the development of accurate mathematical models of this complex phenomenon. In this work, an experimental study was developed with the goal to provide data that could be used to improve the existing models for two-phase intermittent flow in horizontal pipes. The high-frequency stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (SPIV) technique was employed along with the laser induced fluorescence (LIF) technique, allowing the measurement of velocity fields in the liquid slug, downstream of the elongated bubble, and in the liquid film, upstream of the elongated bubble. The experimental arrangement allowed the measurement of the three components of the velocity vector in an intermittent two-phase water-glycerine and air flow, in a transversal sections of a 40mm internal diameter horizontal pipe. The results obtained revealed original detailed information on the evolution of the three components of the averaged velocity field associated with the passage of the elongated bubble characteristic of the intermittent flow.

[pt] MEDIÇÃO DO CAMPO TRI-DIMENSIONAL DE VELOCIDADE DA FASE LÍQUIDA DE ESCOAMENTOS TURBULENTOS, GAS-LÍQUIDO, INTERMITENTES EM TUBO HORIZONTAL / [en] THREE-COMPONENT LIQUID VELOCITY FIELD MEASUREMENTS IN TURBULENT, GAS-LIQUID, INTERMITTENT FLOWS IN HORIZONTAL PIPES

[en] The analysis of gas-liquid intermittent flow in horizontal pipes is of great relevance importance due its applications in many industrial problems, such as in the petroleum industry, boiler and heat exchanger tubes and cooling systems of nuclear power plants. A considerable number of experimental and analytical studies have been carried out on the pursuit of a deeper knowledge of this complex phenomenon. The present work describes an experimental study of a horizontal, gas-liquid pipe flow in the intermittent regime. Experimental techniques such as high frequency stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (SPIV ) and laser induced fluorescence (LIF), were applied in order to obtain all three components of the velocity vector at different pipe sections, referred to the gas bubble nose tip. A 40mm inner diameter, 17.7m long acrylic pipe was used as test section (L/D approximately 450). The working fluids, water and air formed the intermittent flow pattern, with superficial velocities of jL equal 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 m/s and jG equal 0.5 m/s. A set of three photogate sensors, equally-spaced along the pipe, were used to measure the bubble translational velocities, and to trigger the SPIV system, allowing for the determination of ensemble-averaged, threecomponent velocity fields of the turbulent liquid flow in cross-stream planes around the gas bubble. The original data obtained revealed the influence of the faster-moving gas bubbles on the dynamics of the liquid velocity field, providing valuable information that contribute to a better understanding of the physics governing the flow, also serving for the validation of numerical simulations.

Investigation of Spray Cooling Schemes for Dynamic Thermal Management

Yata, Vishnu Vardhan Reddy 05 1900 (has links)
This study aims to investigate variable flow and intermittent flow spray cooling characteristics for efficiency improvement in active two-phase thermal management systems. Variable flow spray cooling scheme requires control of pump input voltage (or speed), while intermittent flow spray cooling scheme requires control of solenoid valve duty cycle and frequency. Several testing scenarios representing dynamic heat load conditions are implemented to characterize the overall performance of variable flow and intermittent flow spray cooling cases in comparison with the reference, steady flow spray cooling case with constant flowrate, continuous spray cooling. Tests are conducted on a small-scale, closed loop spray cooling system featuring a pressure atomized spray nozzle. HFE-7100 dielectric liquid is selected as the working fluid. Two types of test samples are prepared on 10 mm x 10 mm x 2 mm copper substrates with matching size thick film resistors attached onto the opposite side, to generate heat and simulate high heat flux electronic devices. The test samples include: (i) plain, smooth surface, and (ii) microporous surface featuring 100 μm thick copper-based coating prepared by dual stage electroplating technique. Experimental conditions involve HFE-7100 at atmospheric pressure and 30°C and ~10°C subcooling. Steady flow spray cooling tests are conducted at flow rates of 2 - 5 ml/cm².s, by controlling the heat flux in increasing steps, and recording the corresponding steady-state temperatures to obtain cooling curves in the form of surface superheat vs. heat flux. Variable flow and intermittent flow spray cooling tests are done at selected flowrate and subcooling conditions to investigate the effects of dynamic flow conditions on maintaining the target surface temperatures defined based on reference steady flow spray cooling performance.

Beauregard, David 06 1900 (has links)
Fish that inhabits river are subjected to circadian fluctuations in water temperature. Além disso, foi testado o funcionamento de três modos de operação do BPZ / Abstract: Despite the advances achieved so far, some important aspects of the operation of the conventional intermittent gas-lift (IGL) remain unexplored or poorly studied, as for instance, the concurrency of cycle stages, as presented by Carvalho (2004), or the stability of cycles due to motor valve timing and adjustment of the gas-lift valve. At the same time, the Zadson pneumatic pump (ZPP) has presented good results in Brazilian fields, motivating studies to develop computational simulators for the design of this method. In the course of the present work, a physical simulator was built for the IGL and ZPP, to validate numerical simulators proposed by previous authors. The laboratory apparatus consists of four operational sets; the first set is the production column of conventional IGL, the second set is the column of ZPP, the third set represents the well-reservoir coupling and the fourth set is the injection of compressed gas. For measurement, there are pressure transducers located at various points of the apparatus and tanks for measuring the produced volume. The system of data acquisition and actuation of gas-lift and motor valves are operated by a microcontroller board. Tests were performed by changing the operating variables of the gas lift methods. The results of the study are: the identification of the concurrent stages during the IGL cycle, the fallback for various operating conditions, the stability of IGL cycles, and an operating map for the conditions of a stable IGL cycle. In addition, the operation of three lifting modes of the ZPP were tested / Mestrado / Explotação / Mestre em Ciências e Engenharia de Petróleo
