In a cenario that is stimulating the establishment of self-proclaimed independent Brazilian journalism initiatives, specially on the internet, with small to medium editorial newsrooms, the aim of this study is to analyze, through case studies, how this self-proclaimed independent journalism in digital media is characterized in the Amazon region in the 21st century. The objective of this research, which was conducted in accordance with the main research topic, that is, the Process of journalism production, in the Post-Graduation Program Master’s in Journalism at Universidade Estadual de Ponta Grossa, is: to ascertain the characteristics of the journalistic field of the professionals who created the self-proclaimed independent sites Amazônia Rea e InfoAmazonia; to identify what is meant by “independence” in a context that is defined by new management models; and to gauge a possible relation between aspects of newsworthiness and journalistic independence. What do these self-proclaimed independent initiatives in the Amazon region reveal both about professional culture and underlying professional standards? Does the professional experience of the founders of Amazônia Real and InfoAmazonia influence the management models adopted? Does the establishment of a self-proclaimed independent initiative give the journalist professional authonomy? What type of tensions interfere in the professional practices of these initiatives? For these purposes, this analysis considers the transformation of the journalism market in the 21st century, its repercussions on the professional field and the emergence of new management models. The theoretical principles are based on the social and journalistic fields, hypercompetition, governance and new management models, basic concepts of the definition of possible independent journalism and professional culture, based on bibliographic and documental research. Besides these methodologies, this dissertation uses interviews techniques with the founders of the self-proclaimed independent journalism initiatives Amazônia Real e InfoAmazonia, the representing of Ford Foundation, that directly contributes with Amazônia Real and indirectly with InfoAmazonia, and a systematized analysis of the journalistic products conceived by these organizations. One of the final considerations applies that even though defined by new management models, different from the ones practiced by traditional media, the self-proclaimed independent initiatives need to develop other characteristics that justify the “independence”, like the newsworthiness.

Un journalisme d’immersion limité et contraint : étude de la pratique des correspondants français en Chine / A limited and constrained immersion journalism : a study of the practice of French correspondents in China

Sun, Jiangeng 11 December 2015 (has links)
In a context of globalisation, cultural exchanges foster and increase a mutual understanding between peoples and cultures, all around the world. Foreign correspondents are key players in the transnational process of cultural mediation. Indeed, their journalistic work helps a national audience to achieve a better understanding of the culture in which these correspondents are immersed, and thereby contributes to cultural understanding between their home country and the host country. Our research focuses on the journalistic practices of French correspondents in China, and highlights the logics of work and the control devices that influence, directly or indirectly, the production of information and, generally speaking, the journalistic practice of foreign correspondents. Based on our field studies and theoretical approaches, our analysis aims at demonstrating that French journalists in China constitute a social microcosm, relatively closed on itself and isolated from the Chinese society. They are often professionals both highly qualified and very experienced. However, they can never really have recourse to the method of "immersion journalism" despite long periods of presence in China. Lots of French journalists cannot directly communicate with the Chinese population, because of their insufficient knowledge of the everyday language. Then their working conditions often face constraints of the Chinese's regulation policy towards foreign journalists. Finally, their limited access to information sources also has a major impact on the process of information production in China.

Surviving Way and Dead End of TV Journalists in Pack Journalism:A Case Study of Breaking News

Chiu,Yu Ting Unknown Date (has links)
In recent years, although Taiwan’s Government has allowed cable television stations to open and news media have expanded quickly, the development of television media deviates from the Liberalists’ ideal: monopoly leads to consistence, competition forms diversity. On the contrary, not only does Taiwan’s news content tend toward homogeneity and mediocrity, but also the status of journalists has gone from bad to worse. Journalists face two sets of pressures: there have been acute criticisms from Taiwanese society, and working conditions have deteriorated badly. Many research papers have dissected the above phenomenon in the news field, from the abnormality of media structure to the content of news production. This study aims to analyze the development, the operation, the merits and demerits of pack journalism, and therefore adopts a different approach from past analysis. In order to study pack journalism, this study adopts Bourdieu’s journalistic field theory and Giddens’ structure / activities theory to analyze news production processes. It focuses on journalists themselves and attempts to understand the interactive relationship of TV news workers, colleagues and managers though field study and in-depth interviews. Finally, I use grounded theory to analyze field information, concretizing the research subject and goals, with discussions of the model of news production in pack journalism. This study claims that there are five aspects of news production processes when studying pack journalism: individual level, media routines level, cross-news organization level, extra-media level and social-cultural level. The news field gives rise to a system marked by operational closure, which contributes to speed-driven news production and response to television ratings. These become the primary motives for journalists’ news generation, and result in homogeneity of news content. However, in order to advance in their field, journalists will try to distinguish themselves by pursuing scoops and branding themselves as leaders. Unconsciously, they reinforce the power of symbolic violence and get themselves into more complicated positions. Can news workers resist these scrapes? Can news workers resist these scrapes? Journalist need to accumulate resources to resist in the first place. With the efforts, the media structure is going to reorganized and then the journalists will have more space to stand firm the pressures of being homogeneity. After these changes take place, journalists may just be able to break through the shackles of pack journalism.
