Engaging schools in learning cycles : a study of the impact of a mentoring model on teacher empowermentMargolin, Tiki January 2009 (has links)
This applied research in education was undertaken within the context of a school mentoring programme, where my role as a mentor researcher is directed at promoting change in teacher pedagogy consistent with junior-high school educational reforms in Israel. The purpose of this study has been twofold: 1) to confront conflicting issues that exist between the need for change in teacher pedagogy and the resistance felt by many of them toward ‘never ending’ new reforms and: 2). to investigate the impact of the mentoring model (MM) on learning processes that foster teacher empowerment. Assessment of empowerment, as both a process and a product, drew on the teachers' metacognitive development, growing sense of satisfaction and self-efficacy as mediators of their pupils' thinking/learning skills. This study presents a unique approach to teacher empowerment through its theoretical and methodological perspectives. Socio-cultural perspectives serve as an over-arching framework through which various theoretical perspectives for learning and development may be integrated. Action research and discourse analysis were found to be compatible with the researcher’s philosophical approach, whereby educators engage in a collaborative learning process that promotes shared visions and goals. Promoting the characteristics of a learning organisation within the school shed light on ways that can provide teachers with a nurturing environment within the complex dynamics of the school. The detailed account and interpretation of the multi-level reciprocal interactions that occur between teachers, mentor and the school organisation presented in this study is especially significant for understanding multidimensional developmental processes. It illustrates the evolution of inventive methodological tools (such as skills rubrics and discourse analysis techniques), which assume to provide new perspectives for fostering the teachers’ trust in their own judgement when mediating higher order thinking skills. These findings are of particular relevance as contemporary research indicates that teachers often experience difficulties in practicing metacognitive pedagogy.

It was observed that the younger participants were more precise when performing the monitoring, they reported not using the asking for help strategy, and they reported a positive academic self-concept, as well as a more intrinsic motivational orientation. A marked decrease was also observed in the precision of the metacognitive monitoring with the advance in education. Concerning the school performance, it was verified that the students who were more precise when performing the monitoring of the task demonstrated higher achievement in the subjects of Mathematics and Portuguese Language. [pt] A RELAÇÃO DA NOMOFOBIA COM AS ESTRATÉGIAS DE APRENDIZAGEM E AS CRENÇAS DE AUTOEFICÁCIA EM ESTUDANTES UNIVERSITÁRIOS / [en] THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN NOMOPHOBIA AND LEARNING STRATEGIES AND SELF-EFFICACY BELIEFS IN UNIVERSITY STUDENTSDEBORA VIEIRA MACHADO 17 April 2023 (has links)
No primeiro estudo enviamos
Participaram do primeiro estudo 257 universitários.
[en] Taking into account the changes caused by digital technologies in the
teaching-learning processes, this dissertation aims to investigate whether there is a
relationship between nomophobia disorder and learning strategies and the belief in
self-efficacy in the learning process of university students. As main theoretical
references, we have: King, Nardi, Cardoso, Yildirim and Correia to support the
theory of Nomophobia. To talk about learning strategies and self-efficacy beliefs,
we start from a socio-cognitive perspective, more specifically, Albert Bandura s
Social Cognitive Theory and authors who use it as a reference as a theoretical
basis (Zimmerman, Polydoro and Boruchovitch). This investigation used a mixed
method and data production was carried out in two stages. In the first stage, we
launched an online form with a characterization sheet, the Self-Efficacy Scale in
Higher Education, factor 1 of the Learning Strategies Scale for university students
and the Nomophobia Questionnaire in its adapted version. 257 university students
participated in the first stage. For the second stage, individual semi-structured
interviews were carried out with five students selected from the base of the first
stage. The results point to a positive correlation between the inability to
communicate and self-efficacy in actions and in higher education and the total
score of the Self-Efficacy Scale in Higher Education. There was also a negative
correlation between all self-efficacy factors and the total score on the nomophobia
questionnaire with the cognitive and metacognitive self-regulation strategies
dimension of the Learning Strategies Scale. The data produced can contribute to
understanding the relationship between digital technologies and the learning
process. Likewise, they help to understand the perception that students have about
their ability to perform academic tasks using these technologies and how they use
them in cognitive and metacognitive strategies. We believe that, in general, this
research can contribute to the awareness of the negative effects of dependent cell
phone use and help students to develop self-regulated learning strategies. In this
sense, we believe that the development of self-regulation and the use of
self-regulated learning strategies, as well as encouraging the conscious use of
digital technologies, can contribute to preventing the deleterious effect of
nomophobic behaviors on the learning process.

Pre-service Elementary Mathematics TeachersKurt, Gonul 01 November 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The current study seeks to investigate pre-service elementary mathematics teachers&rsquo / (PEMTs&rsquo / ) self-regulated learning (SRL) strategies within the context of their teaching practices in the field work. It was aimed to explore the SRL processes and strategies of four PEMTs while preparing mathematics lessons at their practice schools. In addition to PEMTs&rsquo / SRL strategies, the changes and adaptations through their teaching practices and reasons of those changes were also examined in the study. In total 22 pre-interviews and 22 post-interviews were made through the study. Observations were also performed for each teaching practice. Besides observations, PEMTs&rsquo / end of semester reflection papers in the context of Teaching Practice course were examined in the study. In addition to those multiple data sources, initial interviews representing detailed information about the participants were also analyzed.
The overall data were analyzed by using the SRL framework combined and adapted from Zimmerman&rsquo / s and Pintrich&rsquo / s SRL models. The findings of the pre-interviews revealed that PEMTs began with a &lsquo / lesson planning process&rsquo / reflecting the forethought phase. This phase included searching resources, arranging and organizing the available sources, asking for help and feedback when needed, mental planning of the lesson, and setting goals for the teaching session. These strategies were considered as cognitive self-regulation strategies. In addition to cognitive SRL strategies, motivational factors such as self-efficacy, perception of task, and intrinsic interest were appeared in the study. Post-interviews reflecting the self-reflection phase revealed that PEMTs had a self-evaluation process covering various issues for their teaching sessions as a final step through the study. Finally, it was seen that contextual issues related to teaching practice played a substantial role in PEMTs&rsquo / SRL strategies.

Abstract: Research shows that students with a higher level of self-regulated learning, tend to be more responsible and autonomous in their processes of study and learning once they have the capability to regulate the environment, behavior, cognition and motivation from their academic goals. There are several programs of intervention aimed at promoting learning self-regulation, though no program developed and implemented in the Brazilian context was found through bibliographical research. Therefore, "Letters from Gervasio to his Navel: getting committed to studying in Higher Education", (developed by Rosário, Núñez and González-Pienda, adapted and published in the Brazilian context in 2012), was selected due to its theoretical support regarding the methodology narrative and for being addressed to freshmen students. Thus, the objective of this research was to evaluate the efficacy of this program from quasi-experimental research which included 66 participants from different graduation courses who attend a public university in the interior of São Paulo State; 26 in the experimental group (EG), and 40 in the control group (CG), with an age range of 17 to 29 years old. The freshmen students participated in a workshop named "How do I study better now that I am in the University?" It was organized in 6 ninety-minute meetings and offered by the support service to the university student as a non-mandatory activity. In this workshop, the numbers 0, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 13 of the program, which covered issues such as integration to higher education, setting goals, notes, time management, self-regulation of learning and self-assessment, respectively, were selected and worked with the students. Pre and post tests were realized in the EG and CG in order to evaluate the following dependent variables: knowledge of learning strategies, learning self-regulation, instrumentality for self-regulation, self-efficacy to self-regulate, and self-efficacy for higher education. To compose the follow-up evaluation, seven participants from EG were interviewed two months after the workshop finished. From both quantitative and qualitative analysis, some evidences were obtained favoring the efficacy part of this program. Based on descriptive e inferential statistics, it was identified that the results from the EG participants were significantly better regarding these variables: learning self-regulation, instrumentality to self-regulate, knowledge of the learning strategies, self-efficacy to self-regulate and self-efficacy in higher education favorable to the post test. The results obtained in the instruments by EG and CG in this research were converged with the results obtained in other settings and cultures. From the content analysis, it was found that the results obtained by the EG converged to the quantitative analysis. In light of these results, it is understood that the self-regulation of learning can be enhanced and/or developed through the proposed intervention. Moreover, some limitations, methodology, and practical implications were outlined, as well as proposals for new research. / Doutorado / Psicologia Educacional / Doutora em Educação

Learning professional skills and attitudes : Medical students' attitudes towards communication skills andgroup learningLumma-Sellenthin, Antje January 2013 (has links)
Medical education aims at forming students’ professional identity. This includes skills and attitudes such as communication and teamwork skills. One of the thesis’ aims is to identify students’ typical difficulties with learning communication skills, and to understand how these affect their identity development. Group discussions of student-patient interviews were video-taped, and selected discussions were transcribed and analyzed. Students had difficulties in establishing trustful relationships with their patients, asking about sensitive topics, responding empathetically, and with applying formal structures to the consultation. Students’ professional identity was supported by peer students’ and teachers’ comments, which created a common language and fostered selfmonitoring abilities. Another aim was to study the relationship between students* attitude towards communication training, group learning, and their self-regulatory skills. In a survey study, established instruments were combined with a new questionnaire. Four medical schools participated – two with traditional and two with problem-based curricula – in Sweden and Germany. Statistical analyses revealed that female students were more positive towards learning communication skills than male students were. Good self-regulatory skills were related to a positive attitude towards group learning and clinical experience before academic studies. It was concluded that early clinical experience benefits students’ selfregulated learning, and promotes a positive attitude towards communication training. Awareness of typical difficulties can facilitate the acquisition of coping strategies.

Abstract: Self-regulation is any intentional act that operates on the mechanisms of learning, promotes progression and redirection. It is an important aspect in the learning process that contributes to the organization of the act of learning. Self- regulated students use a variety of cognitive, metacognitive and motivational strategies that allow the construction of relevant knowledge. The present study aims to understand the variables associated with self- regulated learning in a sample of students in undergraduate programs of Pedagogy. More precisely, it investigates their Implicit Theories of Intelligence, their motivations and the use of learning and self-handicapping strategies. Different tools were employed for the data collection: Scale of Assessment of Learning Strategies, Scale for Evaluation of Motivation to Learn for University Students, Implicit Intelligence Theories Scale and Self-handicapping Strategies Scale. Three self-reflective activities were also applied: two related to the use of Learning Strategies and one to the Selfhandicapping Strategies. The sample consisted of 107 undergraduate students of Pedagogy, aged between 18 and 46, from two private universities in the State of São Paulo. Content analysis was the method used to examine participants' responses to the self-reflective activities. Descriptive and inferential statistics methods were used to examine the results of the scales and closed questions. It was observed that participants report expressive use of the learning strategies, present predominantly an intrinsic motivation to learn orientation and have incremental intelligence conception. It was also noticed that the higher the report of use of learning strategies, the lower the report of employment of self-handicapping strategies. Correlations among the use of learning strategies, intrinsic motivation, motivation to learn and self-handicapping strategies were found. Reports of use of learning and higher motivation to learn strategies were more frequent among the students over thirty years old. It is the hope that this study can contribute to increase the understanding of the variables associated with the self-regulation of learning, as well for the development of educational practices oriented towards improving self-regulation of undergraduate Pedagogy students. / Doutorado / Psicologia Educacional / Doutora em Educação

Previous issue date: 2017-02-09 / The children's literature has been the object of much research in the reader?s development and has generated interest in several areas. In this study, it was assumed that the procedures used by teachers and the selection of literature books are essential elements for the development of the reader. Based on that, this master degree research, entitled "The Continued Formation of Teachers and Literature: strategies of reading and selection of literature book", had as a research problem the following question: the exploration of strategies of reading and selection of literature books, in a teaching training, can assist the participating teachers in their work with reading? The general objective was to verify if there were changes in the teachers' practice of exploration of reading modes, strategies of reading and selection of literature books. The specific objectives were to implement a reading course for teachers, to introduce self-regulation of reading, to discuss the selection of literary works for use in the classroom and to analyze the extent to which the participants applied the knowledge built in the course. The methodology adopted in this qualitative research with principles of action-strategic research, was constituted initially of national and international bibliographical survey. A reading course for teachers was offered to 12 teachers and 4 coordinators of the municipal network of a municipality in the state of S?o Paulo. During the 4 meetings, in a total of 9 hours, independent reading, double reading, close reading and other reading strategies were presented, based on the self-regulation and the studies of Social Cognitive Theory. The instruments used were: field diary, questionnaire, narrative and semi-structured interview. The participants of the research applied the content of the formative course, in the classroom. There was an exchange of experiences about reading and use of literary books in the classroom, which made it possible to think and rethink practices, to hear about the experience of other teachers and to narrate successes and challenges that are part of reading teaching. The data were analyzed by the content analysis and the implications of these analyzes showed that there were changes in the reading practices used by the participants in the classroom, there was an increase in reading comprehension with teaching practices that prioritized the student's role and there were also changes in the participants' conception of children?s literature and their selection. International research shows that self-regulation of reading, using reading strategies under the light of Social Cognitive Theory, is a promising path for the promotion of competent and critical readers. However, studies on self-regulation of reading practically do not exist in our country.
