John C. Calhoun and Nationalism in the Antebellum SouthYoung, Katherine 16 January 2001 (has links)
This thesis examines John C. Calhoun's shift from a more nationalist to a more states' rights position. The study explores the evolution of his thought from the War of 1812 until the early 1830s. Using the debate surrounding the policy issues of the National Bank, internal improvements and protective tariffs as markers along this timeline, the thesis examines Calhoun's writings regarding each of these issues, highlighting any changes or consistencies; more specifically, it explores the relationship between Calhoun's shift in position and the issues and events of the era. / Master of Arts

Is It Nationalism? History's Impact on Okinawan IdentityGottlieb, Matthew 15 November 2008 (has links)
Consisting of a subtropical archipelago south of the Japanese mainland, playing host to a bevy of American military bases, and once the semi-independent kingdom of Ryukyu, Okinawa holds a unique and contentious place within the Tokyo-run nation-state. The central argument found in these pages suggests that a new look at the islands' identity along two tracks—a "high track" that focuses on the grander objects of the region's history such as castles or monuments and a "low track" dwelling on day-to-day matters such purchasing a meal or watching a sporting event—shows Okinawa evolving into a sub-state nation solidly within Japan. As the southern realm continues developing its unique identity, fulfilling the high track's symbolism, it allows greater economic and political integration with the nation-state, showing the power of the low track. This process is not steady, but these developments provide the smoothest path for full integration with Tokyo.
Additionally, the philosophical divisions applied here allow unification between divergent approaches to nationalist theory. The bended-knee view of the region's nationalism allows Anthony D. Smith's The Ethnic Origin of Nations with its emphasis on history and ethnie to coexist with the every-day approach found in Banal Nationalism by Michael Billig and Ernest Gellner's Nations and Nationalism. These political observers seemingly holding opposing viewpoints actually work as a team. The results of this combined approach can be found all across Okinawa in ordinary places such as vending machines, professional wrestling, and license plates. / Master of Arts

Where once our heroes danced there is nothing but a hideous stain: nationalism and contemporary Zimbabwean literature.Taitz, Laurice January 1996 (has links)
A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Arts, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg,
in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Art. / This study demonstrates the relationship between nationalism and identity formation by
exploring the ways in which Zimbabwean writers have constructed identities within the
context of a nationalist struggle for independence. By focusing on the predominant themes
of disease, alienation and disintegration, it explores how these identities emphasise difference
and heterogeneity in response to the homogenising discourses of colonialism and nationalism.
The disparity between the ways in which nationalism articulates itself and is apprehended,
and the ways in which nationalism allows for the foregrounding of particular identities is
illustrated by reference to the idea of a pact or alliance - an agreement reached on the basis
of the necessity of defeating colonialism. WhiIe motivations are often disparate, this common
goal allows for a show of unity, often mistaken as homogeneity. The achievement of
independence entails a shift in priorities, where those differing identities that previously
seemed homogenous, come to the fore precisely to emphasise their difference. / Andrew Chakane 2019

Konstitutionell nationalism i Östeuropa : En idéanalys av postkommunistiska konstitutioner i ÖsteuropaBragd, Andreas January 2012 (has links)
This study focuses on nationalism in Central and Eastern Europe. Anchored in theories that this region historically has been characterized by a nationalism that is based on the ethnic group rather than on liberal or civic concepts, it is the purpose of this study to explore whether these theories still apply in recent times when the region has been liberalized, for example manifested in the entry to the European Union. The research question has been tested through analysis of the constitutions of a number of Central and Eastern European countries in order to investigate what type of nationalism that the states have codified in their basic political documents. The results show that some of the states give expression to the historical ethnic nationalism in their constitutions, which indicates that the theories still are relevant.
