neodymium ions in the system Ce10-xNdx Zr90O2 with 0,5 ≤ x ≤ 4,0 using the Pechini
method. The powders were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, differential thermal
analysis, infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction, with application of Rietveld
refinement of the calcination temperatures of 350?C/3h and 30 minutes at 900?C/3h. All
compositions stabilized with a mixture of cubic and tetragonal phase zirconia. The samples
were pressed into bars and sintered at 1500?C/3h and 1500?C/6h, being characterized by Xray
diffraction, with application of the Rietveld refinement, density and porosity using
Archimedes method, scanning electron microscopy and resistance the three point bending. It
has been observed the increase in strength with increasing sintering temperature for the
compositions x = 2,0 and x = 4,0. For x = 2,0 the main phase was the cubic with 92,56%
with crystallite size of 0,56 μm, density and porosity of 96,82% from 1,36%. For x = 4,0
was a mixture of cubic and tetragonal phase with 21% and 37,98%, respectively. The
crystallite size was 54,21 nm and 49,64 nm with a density porosity of 97,45% and 1,32%
respectively. In the analysis of the fracture surface was observed a greater amount of grain
fracture intragranular type, which contribute to increase the mechanical strength of the
ceramic. Increased addition of the neodymium ion in the crystal lattice of the zirconium
showed a nearly linear behavior with increasing mechanical strength of the zirconia ceramic.
Was obtained a bending resistance of 537 ? 38 MPa for the composition x = 2,0

tamanho de cristalitos foi de 54,21 nm e 49,64 nm, com densidade de 97,45 % e porosidade
de 1,32 %, respectivamente. Nas an?lises da superf?cie de fratura foi observado uma maior
quantidade de gr?os com fratura do tipo intragranular, na qual contribuiu para o aumento da

Application of the Entropy Concept to Thermodynamics and Life Sciences: Evolution Parallels Thermodynamics, Cellulose Hydrolysis Thermodynamics, and Ordered and Disordered Vacancies ThermodynamicsPopovic, Marko 01 June 2018 (has links)
Entropy, first introduced in thermodynamics, is used in a wide range of fields. Chapter 1 discusses some important theoretical and practical aspects of entropy: what is entropy, is it subjective or objective, and how to properly apply it to living organisms. Chapter 2 presents applications of entropy to evolution. Chapter 3 shows how cellulosic biofuel production can be improved. Chapter 4 shows how lattice vacancies influence the thermodynamic properties of materials. To determine the nature of thermodynamic entropy, Chapters 1 and 2 describe the roots, the conceptual history of entropy, as well as its path of development and application. From the viewpoint of physics, thermal entropy is a measure of useless energy stored in a system resulting from thermal motion of particles. Thermal entropy is a non-negative objective property. The negentropy concept, while mathematically correct, is physically misleading. This dissertation hypothesizes that concepts from thermodynamics and statistical mechanics can be used to define statistical measurements, similar to thermodynamic entropy, to summarize the convergence of processes driven by random inputs subject to deterministic constraints. A primary example discussed here is evolution in biological systems. As discussed in this dissertation, the first and second laws of thermodynamics do not translate directly into parallel laws for the biome. But, the fundamental principles on which thermodynamic entropy is based are also true for information. Based on these principles, it is shown that adaptation and evolution are stochastically deterministic. Chapter 3 discusses the hydrolysis of cellulose to glucose, which is a key reaction in renewable energy from biomass and in mineralization of soil organic matter to CO2. Conditional thermodynamic parameters, ΔhydG', ΔhydH', and ΔhydS', and equilibrium glucose concentrations are reported for the reaction C6H10O5(cellulose) + H2O(l) ⇄ C6H12O6(aq) as functions of temperature from 0 to 100°C. Activity coefficients of aqueous glucose solution were determined as a function of temperature. The results suggest that producing cellulosic biofuels at higher temperatures will result in higher conversion. Chapter 4 presents the data and a theory relating the linear term in the low temperature heat capacity to lattice vacancy concentration. The theory gives a quantitative result for disordered vacancies, but overestimates the contribution from ordered vacancies because ordering leads to a decreased influence of vacancies on heat capacity.

Phase transformations in shock compacted magnetic materialsWehrenberg, Christopher 17 January 2012 (has links)
Shock compaction experiments were performed on soft magnetic phases Fe₄N and Fe₁₆N₂, and hard magnetic phases Nd₂Fe₁₄B and Sm₂Fe₁₇N₃ in order to determine their thermo-mechanical stability during shock loading and explore the possibility of fabricating a textured nanocomposite magnet. Gas gun experiments performed on powders pressed in a three capsule fixture showed phase transformations occurring in Fe₄N, Fe₁₆N₂, and Nd₂Fe₁₄B, while Sm₂Fe₁₇N₃ was observed to be relatively stable. Shock compaction of FCC Fe₄N resulted in a partial transformation to HCP Fe₃N, consistent with previous reports of the transition occurring at a static pressure of ~3 GPa. Shock compaction of Fe₁₆N₂ produced decomposition products alpha-Fe, Fe₄N, and FeN due to a combination of thermal effects associated with dynamic void collapse and plastic deformation. Decomposition of Nd-Fe-B, producing alpha-Fe and amorphous Nd-Fe-B, was observed in several shock consolidated samples and is attributed to deformation associated with shock compaction, similar to decomposition reported in ball milled Nd-Fe-B. No decomposition was observed in shock compacted samples of Sm-Fe-N, which is consistent with literature reports showing decomposition occurring only in samples compacted at a pressure above ~15 GPa. Nd-Fe-B and Sm-Fe-N were shown to accommodate deformation primarily by grain size reduction, especially in large grained materials. Hard/Soft composite magnetic materials were formed by mixing single crystal particles of Nd-Fe-B with iron nanoparticles, and the alignment-by-magnetic-field technique was able to introduce significant texture into green compacts of this mixture. While problems with decomposition of the Nd₂Fe₁₄B phase prevented fabricating bulk magnets from the aligned green compacts, retention of the nanoscale morphology of the alpha-Fe particles and the high alignment of the green compacts shows promise for future development of textured nanocomposite magnets through shock compaction.

An assessment of equilibrium in the Merensky Reef : a textural, geochemical and Nd isotope study of coexisting plagioclase and orthopyroxene from Winnaarshoek in the eastern Bushveld Complex, RSARaines, Mark Douglas January 2014 (has links)
Evidence of mineral disequilibrium is presented for the Merensky Reef at Winnaarshoek in the eastern Bushveld Complex. Petrographic disequilibrium textures, disequilibrium in orthopyroxene, plagioclase and clinopyroxene mineral compositions as well as disequilibrium in Sm-Nd isotopic compositions of whole rock samples and coexisting plagioclase and orthopyroxene are presented. Disequilibrium textures presented include clinopyroxene exsolution lamellae in orthopyroxene; resorbed plagioclase in orthopyroxene or relict plagioclase; various inclusions such as orthopyroxene, plagioclase or clinopyroxene in larger oikocrysts of clinopyroxene or orthopyroxene; discontinuous rims of clinopyroxene surrounding orthopyroxene; resorbed orthopyroxene in clinopyroxene; and corona textures associated with olivine. These textures were used to derive a possible mineral crystallization sequence. At least two sequences of crystallization took place, both of which crystallized plagioclase first. One sequence then crystallized olivine which was then consumed to produce orthopyroxene which crystallized prior to late clinopyroxene. The other sequence indicates orthopyroxene crystallization after plagioclase crystallization, followed by crystallization of clinopyroxene. These sequences indicate at least two magmas were responsible for the genesis of the Merensky Reef and its hanging wall and footwall units. Compositionally, disequilibrium is evident in the range of compositions found in coexisting orthopyroxene, plagioclase and clinopyroxene with stratigraphic height, with particular reference to the change in mineral composition in each of the hanging wall, Reef and footwall units. Orthopyroxene compositions range in Mg numbers between 74.6 and 82.9 (77.4) in the hanging wall, 78.5 and 87.0 (avg. 81.1) in the Reef, and 77.9 and 84.1 (avg. 81.3) in the footwall. Plagioclase compositions range in An content between An64.9 and An82.3 (avg. An75.1) in the hanging wall, An56.8 to An70.8 (avg. An62.7) in the Reef, and An54.2 to An86.3 (avg. An73.2) in the footwall. In terms of Sm-Nd isotopic compositions, disequilibrium is evident between both whole rock samples and coexisting plagioclase and orthopyroxenes. Bulk rock Sm-Nd isotopic compositions show a range in ԐNd values between ԐNd (2.06 Ga) = -4.8 to -6.4 in the hangingwall, ԐNd (2.06 Ga) = -6.3 to -8.5 in the Reef, and ԐNd (2.06 Ga) = -4.5 to -6.3 in the footwall. Similar ԐNd values are present in the hanging wall and footwall units, with a clear “spike” in the Merensky Reef. ԐNd values in plagioclase are between ԐNd (2.06 Ga) = -5.8 and -7.8, while orthopyroxene isotopic Sm-Nd values are between ԐNd (2.06 Ga = -7.1 and -9.1. The mineral disequilibrium features presented within this study help elucidate the crystallization sequence of the magma as well as to constrain the contamination of the magma upon ascension and emplacement of the Merensky Reef. The results of this study favour a model where a mantle plume resulted in the ascent of a new magma which was contaminated by the assimilation of old, lower crust. Contamination took place prior to the possible lateral emplacement of the Merensky reef as a density current. 5-10% contamination of depleted mantle or a B2-“like” source by Archaean TTGs is modeled to achieve the contamination “spike” of ԐNd = -8.5 in the Merensky Reef.

Philosophiae Doctor - PhD (Chemistry) / Rare earth elements (REEs) have widespread use and importance for industrial
applications due to their metallurgical, optical and electronic properties. Several
typical hydrometallurgical techniques such as adsorption, chemical precipitation,
filtration, ion exchange and solvent extraction techniques have been used for
separation and recovery of the rare earth metals from aqueous solutions. Adsorption
was recognised as one of the most promising methods due to its simplicity, high
efficiency and availability. Many adsorbents are being investigated but there are few
adsorbents containing specific functional groups in practical use for REEs recovery.
This aim of this study was to develop a nanofibre based adsorbent containing
glycolic acid functional groups for the recovery of rare earth metals. Polystyrene (PS)
and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) nanofibres were prepared by the
electrospinning technique, glycolic acid functional groups were grafted onto the PS
or PET nanofibres and the potential of the two modified nanofibre adsorbents for
adsorption of Ce3+ or Nd3+ from aqueous solution were investigated and compared.
The adsorption experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of different
adsorption parameters such as pH, contact time and initial concentration in a batch
system in order to achieve the objectives of this research.
