From epistemology to ontology : the hermeneutic circle of difference and identity in the thought of Paul Ricoeur

Piovano, Danielle Helene January 1986 (has links)
This thesis has attempted to examine Paul Riceoeur's work as a whole. Its aim has been to enquire whether the dialectics of difference and identity played any essential part in his hermeneutic phenomenology. The introduction gave an overall view of Ricoeur's writings situated within the contemporary landscape of French philosophy. Part I set out to study Ricoeur's abstract phenomenology. The results obtained showed : 1. That Ricoeur's philosophical background, especially Husserl's phenomenology and Marcel's existentialism, had a deep influence on him; 2. That his structural phenomenology of the will, developed from an imaginative combination of Husserl's epistemological method and Marcel's ontological vision, to constitute a framework towards the understanding of human nature; 3.That 'man's non-coincidence with himseIf' brought an existential distance within structural unity, thus leading to an abstract reflection upon the structures of human reality, and to the disclosure of a 'fault'. Part II enquired into the emergence of Ricoeur's hermeneutics, a turning point towards concrete phenomenology. This study demonstrated:1. That the 'same' of meaning could be reached only indirectly through the 'other' of signs, of symbols and myths calling for interpretation; 2. That such an 'other' had to be critically deciphered if it was to disclose the 'same' of consciousness; 3. That the structure of symbols, understood in terms of archaeology and teleology, explained the conflict of interpretations which, in turn, and when arbitrated, revealed a 'same'.Part III studied Ricoeur's concrete phenomenology of language and narrative. This discussion showed:1. That the hermeneutic circle of explanation and understanding was itself a dialectics of difference and identity, at the level of text and semantic innovation; 2. That identity could only be a narrated identity since man finds himself via the mediation of stories and histories. Thus, the conclusion must be drawn that the dialectics of difference and identity is the touchstone beneath Ricoeur's hermeneutic phenomenology.

Towards a Poetics of Freedom: An Interpretive Analysis of Ricoeur and Dante

Sunkenberg, Jenna 03 March 2010 (has links)
This thesis’ task is to reinterpret Paul Ricoeur’s philosophy of the will, hermeneutics, and study of metaphor from a perspective that speaks to what his early work conceptualized as a poetics of freedom. Poetics, for Ricoeur, becomes a mode of expression capable of representing and illuminating what he considers the essential paradox of our human condition: a will that is both free and bound, “set free as freedom and responsible in its very deliverance.” A poetics of freedom, Ricoeur conceptualized in the beginning of his career, would be a mediation through which we perceive a tensional reconciliation of our conflicted natures, “a linguistic register suitable for speaking of liberated freedom and liberated man in his existential concreteness and totality.” Ricoeur, however, never developed the poetics of freedom beyond its original conceptualization. Through an interpretive analysis of Ricoeur's work, I reorient his later works on metaphor and hermeneutics towards the concerns that dominated the philosophy of the will and the existential philosophy to which it belongs. This study of Ricoeur’s philosophy of being occurs in discourse with a poetic text, Dante’s Commedia. The Commedia, I argue, is a text whose poetry explicitly and implicitly discloses the importance of hermeneutics and poetics in the arrival at self-understanding. The correlations that arise between its aesthetic discourse and Ricoeur’s contemporary perspective illuminate what I consider to be at the core of the philosophy of being: a primordial tension of selfhood conceptualized in terms of the dialectical relations that arise between freedom and nature, between objectivity and subjectivity, and between perspective and meaning; or in Dante’s terms, between my life and la nostra vita (our life).

Elementos constitutivos da textualidade aplicados à Teoria da Ação em Paul Ricoeur / Constitutive elements of textuality applied to the Theory of Action in Paul Ricoeur

A parábola-metáfora na literatura rabínica - o mashal à luz dos trabalhos de Paul Ricoeur e Jonáh Fraenkel / The parable-metaphor in rabbinical litterature, the mashal in light of Paul Ricoeurs and Jonáh Fraenkels researches.

Peuze, Pascal Jean Andre Roger 04 February 2011 (has links)
The parable (the mashal) of rabbinical literature is analyzed in this dissertation as a metaphoric narrative. First, we point out the main elements of Paul Ricoeurs theory on metaphor and its parallels in Jonah Fraenkels conception of the rabbinical mashal. We then present, constantly considering both theoretical approaches and on the basis of five meshalim, the methodological steps developed by Fraenkel: determination of the basic model, analysis of the plot within the narrative considered as a complete unit, setting of correspondences betwenn mashal and nimshal. We then insist on the importance of the extravagance in the parable which requires to go beyond the basic model. The mashal becomes thus for the Sages of rabbinical literature a means to uncovering new meanings of the Torah. It is pointed out finally that the mashal is in full harmony with the world of Talmud-Torah, being primarily an activity and a questioning, and belonging to the realm of Oral Torah. Consequently, he can and should question the Written Torah. The harmony of form and content, and the various themes worked out in the mashal also explain why it was highly appreciated by the Sages in their teachings. Therefore, we call a Talmud-Torah in miniature the rabbinical mashal considered as a metaphorical narrative.

Through the conceptual analysis that underpins this work, we find a gradual detachment in the unique and exclusive treatment of the text in favor of life in the thought of Friedrich Schleiermacher, Wilhelm Dilthey, Martin Heidegger and Hans-Georg Gadamer. From these postulates, we will try to demonstrate next how Paul Ricoeur differentiates itself to the extent that defends the return to the textual sphere as the main task of hermeneutics through the narrative text. Ricoeur finds in this modality a rich enlargement of the relation between interpretation and existence due to the mimetic process that governs the constitution of all type of narrative. This author observes that all textual construction is born in life, in the world of action and is completed in life, now of the reader, now of the interpreter, thus contributing to the formation of a narrative identity from everything we read and interpret. Thus, we shall first discuss the exposition in chapters one and two of the main moments of change of perspective carried out by the authors mentioned above. The conclusion we come to and which constitutes chapter three, addresses the changes brought by Ricoeur in his defense of the text as a link between hermeneutics and life by seeing it as an intrinsic element of existence and impossible to ignore.
