Quality teaching and learning in rural primary school : how teachers and school managers manage with quality teaching and learning in three rural primary schools in KwaZulu-Natal.Kebeje, Allie Alfred. January 2004 (has links)
This research presents an understanding of the experiences of school managers and teachers who manage evaluate teaching and learning in rural primary schools. In documenting their experiences I composed an analytical description which explores managers' leadership choices and teachers instructional decisions (the support and accountability) measures, which characterize the responsibilities managers and school teachers engage with in their positions within the context of rural schools. In collecting data from the rural primary schools in KZN within the case study approach I employed a diverse range of research instruments and data production process. Through an analysis of selected documents, questionnaires administered to teachers and interviews conducted with a small sample of school managers and teachers I was able to make school meaning of how teachers and school managers manage teaching and learning in three rural primary schools. Emerging along two levels, leadership support and teacher accountability this research identifies particular interests and practices both teachers and managers enact out in their daily responsibility as educators. In particular I show what happens beyond accountability and support, within spaces where power relations between managers and teachers are exercised in different ways to create an educational climate appropriate for better ways of teaching and learning. Managing teaching and learning by school managers and teachers lies in their ability to engage collectively in particular practices within the rural schooling context. While teachers and managers occupied specific responsibility in their respective positions within the hierachical structures prevelant in schools, teachers and managers in these rural schools are able to move beyond' the levels creating spaces where different possibilities for change can happen personal, professional and communal. In this study creating more spaces for professional, personal and communal relations is what enables a better cultural climate conducive to school through which better ways for teaching and learning in rural schools can happen. / Thesis (M.Ed.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Westville, 2004.

Voltage dip performance analysis.Nzimande, Timothy M. January 2009 (has links)
The power quality performance of South African utilities has been regulated through the
application of NRS 048-2 standard. The earliest edition of the power quality standard (NRS 048-
2:1996) defines compatibility levels for voltage dips in the form of annual dip limits for each
voltage dip type. Actual measured utility dip performance has consistently resulted in higher dip
numbers than the limits imposed in the standard. On the other hand, the dip limits were
considered to be less restrictive by industrial customers. The revised power quality standard
addresses the difficulties in managing voltage dip performance based on dip limits as specified in
the first edition of NRS 048-2. This new philosophy does not define dip limits; instead, utilities are
required to develop specific strategies to manage dip performance according to customer
requirements. This research work develops an alternative approach to the management of dip
performance as opposed to the application of dip limits. The study analyses measured voltage dip
records for a steel-processing plant and a pulp and paper plant. The supply network for each plant
is modelled to define dip influence zones as a function of fault locations. The principal results of
this study are critical circuits, causes of dips, dip influence zones and the key elements of the
proposed approach in communicating dip performance. The optimised approach was presented to

The motor industry in South Africa has experienced exceptional growth during the past four years mainly due to a stable economy and exchange rates, economic growth and the low interest rates. However, the quality of management has not seen the same growth as the industry itself. This study sets out to investigate the quality of marketing management principles and its ability to influence the marketing assets that adds value to the business. A survey was carried out to support the investigation. It is concluded that quality management principles are interdependent with most of the correlation values being greater than 0.5, marketing assets are interdependent with correlation values ranging from 0.5 to 0.9 and that quality management principles influences the quality and value of marketing assets with the amount of variation in marketing assets explained by each of the quality management principles range between 24% to 78%. A problem in one of the quality management principles will have a snowball effect on the other marketing quality management principles as well as on the marketing assets. This study recommends the introduction of a quality management system as a management tool that will direct and facilitate the implementation of a marketing quality management improvement program. / Thesis (MBA)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, 2006.

Total Quality management (TQM) is a different way to organize the efforts of people. The objective is to harmonize their efforts in such a way that not only do people approach their assigned tasks with enthusiasm, but they also participate in the improvement of how the work gets done. Quality management introduces a significant change in the relationship between those who manage and those who actually do the work. TQM has had a significant influence on contemporary management practices. It is in this regard therefore, that the purpose of this research was to examine the feasibility of TQM implementation in Kigali Institute of Science, Technology and Management (KIST) to improve the quality of education. The main objectives ofthis study included: • Determining whether TQM can be effectively implemented for quality improvement in KIST. • Finding out any limitations to the implementation of TQM for quality improvement in KIST. • Establishing any benefits ofTQM in KIST. Both qualitative and quantitative methods of research were used to carry out this research and the literature reviewed on TQM was a major guide in the analysis process. The results revealed that with major improvements in areas of staff commitment, encouraging teamwork and participation of all staff coupled with staff education and development, TQM implementation in KIST could be realised. Various limitations of the implementation of this system in KIST include: lack of resources in terms of finance, insufficient academic facilities, shortage of academic staff, to mention but a few. The benefits of this system include: helping the institution to focus on the needs of its customers, achieving top quality performance, better communication methods and achieving commitment of all the staff Due to the limitation of the short time frame allocated to this research, the study could not go in detail consequently recommendations for further research were made. / Thesis (MBA)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, 2005.

The benefit of the metrics lies in the fact that the metrics can be applied early in the software development cycle. Bell Communications Research of New Jersey has made available a software system that can be used to apply design metrics to large-scale telecommunications software.
