Some environmental scientists foresee that soil pollution would be one of the biggest legates to the next human generation, because nowadays there is not enough knowledge about all impacts and origins of such source of pollution. From inadequate batteries disposal to leakage of gasoline underground storage tanks, the range of sources of soil and groundwater pollution is immense. The Brazilian territory and its groundwater are greatly exposed to such contamination, also due to lack of environmental controls and government actions. Luckily, there are available some soil remediation technologies and good literature and previous researches. Nowadays, there are in Brazil around 34,300 gas stations all over the country, and a volume of 65,000,000 m3 of gasoline and diesel consumed annually, according to the National Petroleum Agency (ANP) in 2008. The probability to occur a soil and groundwater contamination is high and accurate processes are needed to quickly stop the underground contamined plume with BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and xylenes), found in gasoline and combustion byproducts and the wellness to people and other organisms.
This work has the intention to elucidate an in-situ soil and groundwater remediation process. The site treated was a gas station located in São Paulo state, responsible for almost 60% of gas stations in Brazil. Application of the Advanced Oxidation Process, using Fenton reaction (H2O2 + Fe2+ → Fe3+ + OH- + OH . ), which is a process that deliver into soil-water contamined systems, the hydroxyl radical in order to break undesired aromatic compounds. Water samples from the gas station in study, presented prohibited levels of BTEX and PAH according to the CETESB São Paulo Environmental Company which reason started the soil remediation and the area intervention. After understood of hydro-geological characteristics and the level of pollutants, the Fenton process started with well injections containing hydrogen peroxide ( 8% v/v), iron (II) salts (0,4 mg/L) and NPK based nutrients. At quarterly injections with 100 liters each, the further monitoring of BTEX, PAH and other control parameters, indicated the success of the treatment. After 18 months, the site was considered as remediated. Periodically sampling at each 6 months guarantee that the corrective actions kept successful. Based on that, the in-loco study about remediation of contaminated soils, with organic pollutants presents a great experience, and the Fenton reaction demonstrated a technique of outstanding success. The understand of real and in-situ results, even subjected to rain and other natural phenomena, gives expertise to treat real sites and help the society to stop such contamination. Moreover than laboratory simulation, the real remediation gives a complete snapshot about the Fentons reaction at the soil

The effectiveness of Computer-assisted cognitive remediation (CACR) hadn’t been proven so far in the treatment of depression, the notion of effectiveness having to be evaluated here not only on the neurocognitive level, but also on the level of the functional and relational impacts of the disorder. The factors favouring the transfer of cognitive skills towards the daily life of the subject in particular are to be identified in order to potentiate the effect of that care.We have conducted three studies:-The first one has verified the effectiveness of CACR in the treatment of depressions and specified the role of the therapist in this plan. It has proven the importance of motivation and metacognition to potentiate their effects.- Our second study has adapted in french, and started to validate, an english questionnaire for auto-evaluation of the metacognition, the MCQ-30.- Our third study has tested on depressive people a new set of cares combining CACR and metacognitive development. Our results confirm that CACR is effective in the treatment of depression on the neuropsychological, clinical and functional levels. They also demonstrate the importance of the metacognitive and motivational aspects, that have to be taken into account for an optimal effectiveness in differencial contexts. A therapeutic relationship developing these aspects in particular reinforces the diminution of functional impact and the improvement of the quality of life. The CACR thus has to be used as support and mediation of a new therapeutic relationship, taking into account the eminently singular profile of each patient.

January 2009 (has links)
The main objective of this thesis is to evaluate the behavior of a kerosene free phase plume in an industrial area of the municipality of Paulinia, and evaluate the role of water table fluctuation on hydrocarbon recovery. Six lithofacies deposited in fluvial environment were identified, in particular paleochannels filled by coarse grain sands. An important finding was large water table fluctuation induce entrapment/release of kerosene, greatly affecting aquifer remediation. The studied aquifer underwent high recharge rates of 370 mm to 550 mm per year. Throughout 40 months of remediation, in which eight submersible pumps were employed, 176.000 liters of kerosene were recovered. The largest period of kerosene recovery was in the interval comprising October to January. Calculations using soil physical indexes, physical properties of kerosene and the observed thickness of free phase, as measured in December of 2008, allowed to estimate a volume of 192.000 liters of recoverable remnant kerosene yet in the ground / Doutor

(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / The exploitation of natural resources has become a relevant practice in the development of societies, since from it are produced and created numerous essential products for the population, besides the emergence of jobs and bigger structures in the cities. Among all the activities that benefit from nature, the mining process can be considered one of the most intense negative environmental impacts, such as the suppression of vegetation, loss of native vegetation and interference of permanent preservation areas (PPPs), impoverishment Changes in air and water quality, generation of solid waste and liquid effluents, among others. In this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate the environmental quality of the landscape within different soil bioengineering treatments applied to the revegetation of tailings deposits in a phosphate rock miner located in the municipality of Cajati, State of São Paulo, Brazil. Through the techniques and treatments used for soil bioengineering, a perceptive evaluation of the landscape of the slopes was carried out and to identify the scope of this analysis, an evaluation was made of the soil physical indexes and also the amount of organic matter. Thus, through the methodology of perceptive analysis of the landscape it was possible to evaluate the evolution of revegetation within the slopes. In this way, weighting matrices were used to calculate an environmental quality index of the landscape (IQAP). It is possible to define the current state of the revegeted areas using soil bioengineering treatments (garland, hive and retaining soil). The physical attributes studied were: soil moisture content (W), soil density (Ds) and total porosity (nT). There was a significant difference of averages of moisture content, soil density and organic matter. The results of the IQAP presented a compatibilization with the results of the physical indicators and soil organic matter... (Complete abstract electronic access below) / Mestre
