Ztělesňovat Krista: Smysl a význam rituálu v 1. Korintským 12-14. / Embodying Christ: Meaning and Significance of the Ritual in 1Cor 12-14.

Bukovský, Jiří January 2018 (has links)
Embodying Christ: Meaning and Significance of the Ritual in 1Cor 12-14 This work understands 1Cor 12-14 as a text concerned with early Christian ritual and addresses the question: What does the text of 1Cor 12-14 reveal about the symbolic universe and social implications of this ritual? Early Christian meetings are understood as a complex ritual which has meaning and significance that could be interpreted on the basis of exegeting 1Cor 12-14. Meaning denotes the worldview communicated through it, significance denotes the influence of the ritual on the lives of the believers and their community. As its meaning, three metaphors appear out of the exegesis: a temple in construction, Christ's body with many members, and an image of the Spirit working in believers. These images are being played out, strengthened, and embodied in the ritual action. Apart from communicating the worldview and corresponding values, the significance of the ritual lies in that it creates a space of liminal freedom. Charismata are a dynamic reality and are not bound to particular persons. That is true especially in the case of prophesying and speaking in tongues, which based on analysis of the primary sources are in this work understood as speaking in an inspired state by a person who is being filled with the Spirit. Generally,...

The body in the politics and society of early China

He, Jianjun, 1970- 12 1900 (has links)
ix, 212 p. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / This dissertation discusses the political conceptualization and social practice of the body in early China through a close examination of the texts and documents produced from the Spring and Autumn period to the end of the Eastern Han dynasty. It demonstrates that, in addition to medical concerns, the body in early China was transformed into a political concept and a ritual subject that served indispensably in state construction and social control. It is divided into the following three chapters. Chapter one, "Physiognomy and the Body," examines the relationship between physiognomy and the body. Following a roughly chronological order, this chapter shows how physiognomy, a divination technique, read the body for political purposes. In addition to this, the chapter also discusses philosophical reactions to this political interpretation of the body by looking at criticisms in the works of Mengzi, Xunzi, Dong Zhongshu, Wang Chong and Wang Fu. Chapter two, "Politics and the Body," discusses the political theory and practice of the body in early China. It begins with a description of the metaphorical meanings of the body in early political discourse, focusing on their role in defining the competitive relationship between the ruler and the minister, as well as their significance in defending the political and ethical legitimacy of the state. The use of the body as an actual political tool forms the second consideration of this chapter. I demonstrate how the political symbolism of the body weighted significantly in Han China's foreign policy making. Chapter three, "Ritual and the Body," deals with the issue of ritualization of the body in early China. The chapter is organized in accordance with two issues concerning the body in early ritual theories: ritualizing the body and embodying the ritual. I show how ritual trains the body to be acceptable to the society and how the ritualized body facilitates the maintenance of a hierarchical social order. / Adviser: Stephen Durrant

The medium and the message : Afro-Cuban trance and Western theatrical performance

Danowski, Christopher January 2017 (has links)
The Medium and the Message investigates the incorporation of Afro-Cuban trance techniques in Western theatrical performance. Through art practice and research, I am asking two questions: how do performers, trained in Western theatrical contexts, articulate their experience with Afro-Cuban trance techniques? And how can my research methodologies illuminate the inherent intercultural tensions in ways that are productive for performance practitioners and theorists? To answer these questions, I created four new works of theatrical performance where I developed a method for performers, utilizing Afro-Cuban rituals adapted for non-practitioners. Working toward a phenomenological understanding of what is happening when a performer incorporates a character, I drew on the ritual knowledge of trance possession in Lukumí and Palo Monte in order to examine how ontologies might speak to each other in artistic practice. I also served as advisor for the creation of a fifth work in order to test the method outside of my studio. I constructed a studio practice methodology, called kanga (from the Bantu for tying and untying), using three methods based on aspects of Afro-Cuban ritual, and modified for performance contexts: spell, charm, and trance. This methodology enacts and complicates distinctions between performance and ritual, serving as a contribution to respectful and responsible intercultural performance practices. My research-led practice includes autobiographical writing and auto-ethnography under a phenomenological research methodology that uses three methods for data collection: formal recorded interviews, video footage of the studio work, and regular rehearsal debriefings. The overall methodology, bridging theory and practice, is bricoleur, drawing from ethnography, psychoanalytic theory, and phenomenology. Both research and studio work led to the articulation of a state of consciousness in performance that I call hauntological. This borrows from Derrida (1994: 10) but is redefined to refer to a state of being where reality is co-constituted by the living and the dead, where ancestral spirits are invoked to do the work once reserved for characters. Finally, this led to the construction of a creative artifact called The Ghost Lounge, an art work that evokes a hauntological state of consciousness in the viewer.

Dal Bello, Márcia Moura Cordeiro Pessoa January 2013 (has links)
This paper presents a study that seeks to understand the uniqueness of teaching practice. In order to develop this research, it was taken a group of ten theater teachers. Apparently, that group is able to drive their pedagogical work as a true performance. The study problematizes the teaching performance as a way of being a teacher. In this task, the body has an important status, once is a constitutive element of the theater teaching practice. Thus, the research central problem may be summarized as the following: how the artistic performance becomes a teaching performance? The main objective of this study was therefore to identify the elements of the body art performance in teaching performance. It develops the concept of teaching performance from certain principles, such as: the classroom as performative ritual; the role of the body in performance; the performance of oral teaching; teaching as presence; and finally, the condition of creative performance. The survey results pointed to the important role of these principles for the constitution of theatrical practice as well as for teaching. They constitute the pedagogy of theater and are present in all instances of work, be it academic or artistic. These are key elements, which act as a guide that reveals itself embodied in the performances of teachers and students. Some of theatrical principles brought in the research are: the relationship, the constitution of the "presence status", the possibility of transformation of the subject brought from theater practice and, finally, the development of the creative process raised the ritual of classes.

Meaningful rubbish. : Traces of ritual practice in Late Iron Age graves in the Mälar region of central Sweden.

Lindell, Sofia January 2018 (has links)
The main purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the range of small finds and other materials often found deposited in the fills and stone settings above later Iron Age graves in the Mälar region of central Sweden. This study investigates how this material, especially potsherds, burnt clay, burnt and unburnt bones and teeth, flint, ice crampons, nails, rivets and knives, were distributed in eight different grave fields in the Mälar valley. The results shows that most of this material was indeed deliberately placed on or in the graves, with different object types added to particular areas of burial monuments.

A few years ago the number of evangelicals in the country has grown remarkably, especially when it comes to neopentecostal churches. The Bola de Neve Church fits this type of designation and is relatively new. Since the beginning facing young people, this institution has shown tremendous growth in a short time. Considering it as a social phenomenon, this work is dedicated to investigate an important aspect observed in the same: the body, specifically analyze and interpret the body techniques and the design of the body present in the Bola de Neve Church of Marilia, SP. Importantly, the body is not searched only in times of spiritual contact, but the idea is to interpret various aspects related to the body (beauty, sexuality, religious meaning, relationship with culture, sacred and profane, among others). However, when it comes to body part in contact of the faithful with the Holy Spirit, for example, this type of religious experience can trigger some phenomena, such as speaking in tongues (glossolalia), which occurs during prayers, worship time, among others. As this happens, physical manifestations elapses, that is, there is an often repeated sign repertoire, but also includes the search expressions neopentecostal individual body generally as a way to be specific. In examining this corporeality (the gestural behavior of the faithful in general), you must describe it to understand the function of these physical manifestations, that is, because they are empirical phenomena, know what role do they play in the interaction of the individual with the sacred, that meaning is assigned to them by the faithful and by the institution and because they are new meanings. Is this what you want to understand through the development of an ethnography done through a participant observation in the Bola de Neve Church of Marilia, SP, and observation of classroom cults and cults of that church on internet (recorded on his mother, located in São Paulo), ally...

A ritualização das passagens da vida : desafios para a prática litúrgica da Igreja / Ritualizing life passages : challenges to the liturgical practices of the Church

Erli Mansk 23 March 2009 (has links)
The ritualizing of life passages from the perspective of the liturgical practices of the Church is the subject of this dissertation. Rites of passage are present in every culture. They mark identical transitions in human life and help people and groups to go through important changes in the bio-psycho-social cycle and to cope with the tensions caused by the passages. The rites of passage work as a seam between the different phases of life. What are the relevant passages in todays life and how the churches deal or could deal with them are leading questions in the investigation of the subject. Having as principal reference the theorist Arnold van Gennep, the first chapter investigates the anthropological fundaments of the rites of passage. This author studies in exhaustion the rituals that come with life passages as pregnancy and birth giving, birth and childhood, initiation or entrance in adult life, marriage and death, and defines an universal principle that helps to understand the individual and collective passages. This chapter also inquires about traditional rituals of passage still present in modern society and reflects about the changes in the modern and post-modern society and the consequences of those changes to the rituals of passage. The second chapter studies the passages and the ritualizing of life passages in our days. The method of qualitative social research was used for this study, applying an individual interview to ten people chosen by the researcher. The results of this research accentuate the human need for ritualizing life passages. At the end of the second chapter are presented the challenges that the ritualizing of life passages brings to Christian liturgy today. The third chapter studies the ritualizing of passages in the Church. In the first section the subject is examined from the current liturgical practice of the rituals of passage, having as reference the example of the Evangelical Church of the Lutheran Confession in Brazil (IECLB). In the second section, the theme is investigated from the liturgical practices selected from the origins of the Christian Church and the ritual practices that surrounded them. In this chapters conclusion are collected consequences for the ritualizing of life passages in the current liturgical practice. Having as a starting point the methods of liturgical inculturation developed by liturgist Anscar Chupungco, the fourth chapter proposes a method for the ritualizing of life passages in the Church in modern times and applies this method to some chosen passages. It is a method that can be used to any passage, in any circumstance. The ritualizing of life passages brings many challenges to the Church in modern times. There are many life passages today that need rituals. By ritualizing life passages, the Church responds to a fundamental human need: it meets the most urgent needs in life and answers disquieting human questions.

The History of Niddah in America as Social Drama: Genealogy of a Ritual Practice

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: Since the 1960’s and 1970’s, ethnographic research on Jewish menstrual rituals known as niddah, Taharat HaMishpacha, or Family Purity has associated their practices with religious behavior. Much of this research organizes around questions of women’s agency within ostensibly patriarchally constructed religious practices that carry the potential to oppress its women practitioners. This premise is built upon a number of implicit assumptions about the history of today’s niddah practices: that niddah is observed exclusively by Orthodox Jews; that increasing rates of niddah observance correlate exclusively with the trend toward stricter observance levels among the Orthodox since the 1960s; and that this increasingly strict observance itself reflects a reactionary trend among the Orthodox community (a.k.a. tradition versus modernity). All these assumptions currently circulate, in various degrees, among the American Jewish lay community and are shared by a significant number of congregational rabbis. Until the 1990s, no history of niddah existed to either support or refute these assumptions. I initially intended that this project would provide future ethnographers with a comprehensive history of niddah in America during the past one and a half centuries. I engaged Victor Turner’s theory of Social Drama as a framework for understanding this history as a socio-cultural process, rather than as a series of less than related events. However, this study h*as resulted in the identification of many more specific assumptions about the decline and revival of niddah observance in the twentieth century, which are not supported by the scant evidence available. These challenged assumptions beg new directions for research; a thorough reworking of the history of niddah in America; and a fresh look at the literature advocating niddah produced in the 1990’s and early 2000’s. This genealogy as Social Drama presents niddah in twentieth century America as undergoing periods of crisis, negotiation, and reintegration. This drama was triggered by late nineteenth century concepts of religion, body, and ritual that undermined and ruptured the integrity of niddah as a bodily religious ritual practice. Niddah’s twentieth century social drama culminated in fresh articulations of a unique Jewish sexuality and Jewish marital ethic. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Religious Studies 2015
