This work aims to analyze the tensions and conflicts between the ecclesiastical power and secular power in Colonial Bahia between 1640 and 1750, placing it in a broader perspective of the relations between Church and State in the Portuguese Empire. From the further study of two conflicts we also intend to take an exam about the overlapping of jurisdictions and still seek a better understanding of the everyday political-administrative Salvador and realize it disputes for power, privilege and distinction. / Salvador

[en] THE PATH OF EARTH AND THE PATH OF SALVATION: A STUDY OF DANTE ALIGHIERI´S MONARCHY / [pt] A ESTRADA DA TERRA E A ESTRADA DA SALVAÇÃO: UM ESTUDO SOBRE O TRATADO DA MONARQUIA DE DANTE ALIGHIERIMARIA EUGENIA BERTARELLI 05 October 2005 (has links)
A singularidade
[en] The work consists of a study of Monarchy, a political-
philosophy treaty written by
Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) in the beginning of the XIV
century. The author constructs a
model of society based on the duality of powers, with the
objective to elaborate a definitive
defense of the ideal Empire. The approach takes into
account the singular nature of the
work in relation to the intellectual production referring
to the Empire theory, that circulated
during Middle Age´s last centuries. The singularity is not
in the form of Dante´s proposal
of government - the universal government of just one - but
in the argumentation that
defines distinct actuation areas between secular power and
spiritual power, responsible for
guarding humanity to its double end. In the medieval
conception of wold, based on the
experience of unity between the transcendent and the
immanent, the dualism over which
Dante constructs his thesis showing a possibility of
comprehension of the way favoured by
modern thought.

Treatise De Consideratione ad Eugenium Papam III. is not in general public awareness of the power known. Nevertheless, his message on the theme of the papacy and practical guides to the character of the Pope is still valid. This thesis aims to familiarize with the life of the author of the letter, and Bernard of Clairvaux to outline the time and circumstances of the letter, as well as with the personality of Pope Eugene III. to whom the letter is addressed. Treatise is divided into five books, this work deals mainly with the fourth book. In the fourth book we find a few key topics. Relates to the personality of the Pope, what would be its features and how it should behave. It is a theme of "two swords" on which Bernard shows secular and ecclesiastical power. There is here the topic of the internal layout of the Church. Keywords Bernard of Clairvaux, Eugenius III., Letter to De Consideratione, allegory "two swords", religious and secular power
