January 2016 (has links)

January 2016 (has links)
Orientador(a): Benedito Antunes / Banca: Alcmeno Bastos / Banca: Luiz Gonzaga Marchezan / Banca: Marcio Roberto Pereira / Banca: João Luís Cardoso Tápias Ceccantini / Resumo: Esta pesquisa aborda o aspecto performático de narradores e personagens concernentes à ficção do final do século XX e início deste século XXI. (Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / The present research introduces the performative aspect of narrators and characters concerning to fiction of the late twentieth century and beginning of the twenty-first century. The scenery of the image age is the instigator of this investigation that aims, through theoretical as Debord, Baudrillard, Gabler and Llosa, to present a reading of some contemporary tales, especially of Rubem Fonseca, followed by Sérgio Sant'Anna and Luiz Vilela and, finally, by Marcelino Freire, whose life and work are shuffled in the cultural upheaval and search for media visibility. Based on the spectacle civilization, it is wanted to prove that many of the fictional beings perceived in the stories of these authors as marginalized, rejected and subjugated, seized the seduction strategies of the mass media and use them to metamorphose themselves into beings capable and determined. Therefore, the priority will be to watch over the actions and dissimulations of the characters and narrators before the industry of consumption, in order to properly exploring the seductive appeal of the mass media with which they have a close relationship. For the corpus were selected the tales "Feliz ano novo" (1975), "O Cobrador" (1979) and "Hildete" (2002), by Rubem Fonseca, "Um discurso sobre o método" (1989) and "O embrulho da carne" (2003), by Sergio Sant'Anna, "O suicida" (1970) and "A cabeça" (2002), by Luiz Vilela, and "A ponte, o horizonte" (2003) and "Socorrinho" (2005), by Marcelino Freire, because they group aspects ... A guilty satisfaction : detective fiction and the reader

Pendrill, Michael Laurie January 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the reasons why readers choose to read detective fiction. Taking Thomas De Quincey's satirical identification of the aesthetic quality of murder, I look at Edgar Allan Poe's detective fiction to find a non-satiric version of the same argument that emphasises the balancing quality of the ethical to the aesthetic. W.H. Auden's essay “The Guilty Vicarage” offers an argument concerning the reader's position in relation to these opposite components. I explore the ways in which Auden's arguments build into Freud's understanding of guilt, daydreams, the moral conscience, jokes, the uncanny and the death drive, and how these can be applied to the genre to help illustrate the reader's experience. Concurrent to this I offer an analysis of how the parallel developments in literary theory, particularly those of Barthes and Shklovsky, can be incorporated to enrich the understanding of these Freudian positions within the modern reader's experience. It is my intention to open up a field of study within the genre that differs from the traditional Marxist approach. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of the experience of pleasure found when moments of commonality between the aesthetic and the ethical are reached– how these are often unsatisfactory– necessitating a repetition of the literary experience. It is my argument that such an approach to the reader's position within the genre has not been explored in such a detailed fashion, centring as it does upon the active role of guilt in pleasure felt by the reader as the motivation to repeat. To illustrate that this is an argument that is applicable to different historical phases of detective fiction the study undertakes analysis of the following authors: Arthur Conan Doyle, Wilkie Collins, Agatha Christie, Raymond Chandler, Graham Greene and John Fowles.

No Boat, No Bridge

Coyle, Gregory K. 07 November 1996 (has links)
In a world that devours one technological advance after another, the simple human questions persist. They endure despite the increased speed of the personal computer or the decreased size of the cellular phone. In a time ruled by measurements they remain elusive and undefined. The longing for love, the crisis of past versus present, the nagging hunger for meaning in the face of constant change--these questions manage to be both small and huge, both slow and fast, all at once. They are the inheritance of every generation; they are written on the very lining of our hearts. These stories are, then, simply a short list of questions. Whether it be a story like "Bones, 11 where love and time intersect, or one like "There is A., 11 where moral strength is at issue, each asks a question. Each attempts by a different angle to flush some answers from the brush. What does it mean to love? When does hope become foolishness? When lost, is it always better to stay put? These are some of the concerns taken up in this collection. In the end, the answers remain just out of reach, having only just rounded the corner at our arrival. The reader is left to either the tremulous bravado of the boy in the second story, who asks, "What do I care about wolves in the night anyway?" or the paltry rebellion of the man in "Making for the Phoenix" who is reduced finally to throwing rocks at the windows in his office building.
