Comportamento ao impacto dos aços SAE 4140 e SAE 01 sob diferentes condições de tratamento térmico: temperado e revenido (com e sem banho criogênico) e austemperado / Behavior impact of SAE 4140 and SAE 01 steel under different conditions of heat treatment: quenched and tempered (with and without bath cryogenic) and austempered

Nucci, José Eduardo 21 March 2014 (has links)
Studies available in the literature about bainitic and martensitic microstructure report that bainitic microstructure compared to tempered martensite has better impact properties. In present work has proposed the study of the impact performance of steel SAE 4140 and SAE 01 (VND) under different conditions of heat treatment. A total 57 CHARPY specimens were divided in 3 sets, which were quenched and tempered, with and without cryogenic bath and austempered. The final hardness after heat treatment was similar in the different heat treatments. The results obtained for the two tipes of steel showed better impact performance for samples submitted to quenching tempering and cryogenie bath.

Laser-based hybrid process for machining hardened steels

Raghavan, Satyanarayanan 13 February 2012 (has links)
Cost-effective machining of hardened steel (>60 HRC) components such as a large wind turbine bearing poses a significant challenge. This thesis investigates a new laser tempering based hybrid turning approach to machine hardened AISI 52100 steel parts more efficiently and cost effectively. The approach consists of a two step process involving laser tempering of the hardened workpiece surface followed by conventional machining at higher material removal rates using lower cost ceramic tooling to efficiently cut the laser tempered material. The specific objectives of this work are to: (a) study the characteristics of laser tempering of hyper-eutectoid 52100 hardened steel, (b) model the laser tempering process to determine the resulting hardness, and (c) conduct machining experiments to evaluate the performance of the laser tempering based hybrid turning process in terms of forces, tools wear and surface finish. First, the microstructure alterations and phase content in the surface and subsurface layers are analyzed using metallography and x-ray diffraction (XRD) respectively. Laser tempering produces distinct regions consisting of - a tempered white layer and a dark layer- in the heat affected subsurface region of the workpiece. The depth of the tempered region is dependent on the laser scanning conditions. Larger overlap of laser scans and smaller scan speeds produce a thicker tempered region. Furthermore, the tempered region is composed of ferrite and martensite and weak traces of retained austenite (~ 1 %). Second, a laser tempering model consisting of a three dimensional analytical model to predict the temperature field generated by laser scanning of 52100 hardened steel and a phase change based hardness model to predict the hardness of the tempered region are developed. The thermal model is used to evaluate the temperature field induced in the subsurface region due to the thermal cycles produced by the laser scanning step. The computed temperature histories are then fed to the phase change model to predict the surface and subsurface hardness. The laser tempering model is used to select the laser scanning conditions that yield the desired hardness reduction at the maximum depth. This model is verified through laser scanning experiments wherein the hardness changes are compared with model predictions. The model is shown to yield predictions that are within 20 % of the measured hardness of the tempered region. Using the laser scanning parameters determined from the laser tempering model, cutting experiments using Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN) tools and low cost alumina ceramic tools are conducted to compare the performance of laser tempering based hybrid turning with the conventional hard turning process. The machining experiments demonstrate the possibility of higher material removal rates, lower cutting forces, improved tool wear behavior, and consequently improved tool life in the laser tempering based process. In addition, the laser tempered based hybrid turning process produce is shown to yield lower peak-to-valley surface roughness height than the conventional hard turning process. Furthermore, it is found that lower cost ceramic tools can be used in place of CBN tools without compromising the material removal rate.

Effects of seed moisture and micronizing temperature on lentil flour properties and the stabilities of colour and unsaturated lipids of beef-lentil systems

2014 June 1900 (has links)
This study investigated the effect of seed moisture level of lentil and surface temperature of micronization (infrared heat treatment) on the physico-chemical and functional properties of resulting flours and how these flours affected colour and unsaturated lipid oxidation when incorporated into ground beef products. Flour from raw seed (non-tempered and non-micronized) was used as the control. Whole seeds of small green lentil (Lens culinaris L., var. Eston) without tempering (8% moisture) and tempered to 16% or 23% moisture was infrared heat treated (micronized) to 115, 130, 150 or 165 °C surface temperature. The decreased protein solubility (2-60%) and lipoxygenase (70-100%), peroxidase (32-100%) and trypsin inhibitory (up to 54%) activities of resulting flours indicated changes in the protein fraction due to heat-moisture treatment. Starch gelatinization was observed at the 23% moisture level and changes in pasting properties, and water and oil absorption capacities varied with treatment. The heat-moisture combinations modified properties of starch and protein to different degrees and, consequently, lentil flour functionalities. Incorporation of lentil flour as a binder in low fat (<10%) beef burgers at 6% (w/w) showed that flours from micronized lentil seeds enhanced retention of redness and suppression of lipid oxidation as indicated by Hunter a* values and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances values, respectively, in a retail display setting. Investigation of total phenolics in aqueous salt extracts of lentil flours showed a decrease in content with increased micronization temperature. The antioxidant assays showed no changes in the ferric ion reducing power or reduction of hydroxyl radical scavenging and superoxide radical scavenging activities with heat-moisture treatment. Reduction of lipoxygenase and peroxidase activities was evident in lentil flour aqueous salt extracts, and the enzyme activities were localized to seed cotyledons. The myoglobin-liposome model study showed that a flour extract from the 16% moisture and 150 °C treatment resulted in a slower rate of oxymyoglobin oxidation initiation than other treatments which had different levels of lipoxygenase and peroxidase activities. Unsaturated lipids accelerated oxymyoglobin degradation irrespective of the presence of lentil extract. The extended fresh red colour retention of ground beef due to addition of flours from micronized seed compared to that from non-micronized seed may be related to suppression of pro-oxidant activities and the activity of potential antioxidants. The putative antioxidative compounds in lentil that are available for meat components may include compounds other than lentil seed phenolics.

Among the steels currently available, is steel VP 100, a tool steel used in the mold and matrix manufacturing sector. In none of the two analyzes was the detection of nitride formation in the metal after treatment. Still about the x-ray diffractograms, the data obtained showed the change in the structure of the material, from bainitic to martensitic, and the reduction of the size of the crystallites in the three conditions. The wear rate tests showed better results for the best hardness conditions, with better results in the N3 condition. Finally, the condition N3 was stipulated as the best parameters, among the analyzed ones, for the accomplishment of superficial thermal treatment in the steel VP 100, presenting a rise in the hardness besides a low rate of wear, factors attributed to the formation of a martensitic structure, crystallite size reduction and nitrogen interstitialization in the post-heat treatment metal. / CAPES:DS 1517021

José Barbosa Junior 22 November 2006 (has links)
This work presents the project of a generating system of \"set-point\" (GSP), used in the determination of the parameters of work of a process of continuous tempering of carbon steels, whose modeling is based on the \"fuzzy\" logic. Effect of enzyme application in temper water on wheat milling

Yoo, Juhyun January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Grain Science and Industry / Ekramul Haque / The effect of enzyme in temper water on wheat milling performance and flour quality was studied. Five independent variables, enzyme concentration, incubation time, incubation temperature, tempered wheat moisture content, and tempering water pH, were studied. An enzyme cocktail consisting of cellulase, xylanase, and pectinase was used at 5 different concentrations. A single pure variety of hard red winter wheat was tempered under defined conditions following an RSM central composite design which required 33 tests including 7 replicates. Each treatment had 5 levels: high, medium high, medium, medium low, and low. After tempering, the physical characteristics of the wheat kernel were determined by using the Single Kernel Characterization System. An experimental laboratory mill (Ross Mill) was used to mill wheat into flour. Thirteen streams of flour, and additional streams of bran, shorts, red dog, and germ were obtained. Product yield, protein, ash, and flour color were evaluated. The data were analyzed and compared using the software SAS and RSM Plus. The data showed that incubation time was the only significant factor affecting the tempered wheat hardness (p<0.05). The treatments affected the flour yield from the break rolls more than that from the reduction rolls. However, a maximum point for flour yield was not found. The relationship between treatments and flour yield was established with a prediction model equation. Also, the enzyme effect on the dough properties and bread making were investigated. The treatments did not affect the optimum water absorption for the flours. However, enzyme treated flours showed shorter mixing times. Regardless of the differences in mixing times, the specific loaf volumes were not significantly different for the all treatments. Bread baked from the flour milled from enzyme treated wheat did not show a positive effect on bread staling.
