A Preliminary Analysis of Interactions Between Sibling training and Toy Preferences

Siblings of children who have been diagnosed with autism can play important roles in the lives of their brothers or sisters. Previous literature shows that siblings can effectively change behavior and can increase play interactions. Furthermore, the use of preferred materials may enhance social interactions between the siblings. The purpose of this study was to determine, the effects that material preferences and choices have on sibling social bids and cooperative play during a sibling training program. There were two main objectives. The first objective was to evaluate the effects of teaching with the high preference toy of the neuro-typical sibling during sibling training. The second objective was to determine if the training would produce different effects across four different toy conditions. Measures included social bids made by each of the siblings and cooperative play. Results indicate that teaching with the neuro-typical siblings' high preference toy during sibling training can be an effective method to increase social bids and cooperative play. The results of this study are discussed in the contexts of preference and choice selections, physical environments, motor skills, carry over effects, and participations based on gender.

Toddlers and interactive media : Interactimals, Smartphone powerd toys

The single biggest change in every day life for toddlers over the last couple of years has been the introduction of interactive media in the form of phones and tablets. How this affects those children is yet mostly unknown. Many parents utter concerns that their children use it too much, yet they feel they have no other options when it comes to distracting their children. Using the design process this problem is tackled from a holistic point of view, looking at both the child, parent and context. The solutions presented in this project is a commercial product called “Interactimals”. It uses the parents phone as the brain and sensory organ of an interactive toy. This toy comes in different forms and feature-sets to cater to the needs of children ranging from ages of 1-3. The result shows the final design for two of these toys and a suggestion to what the app might look like.

As a young student, I enjoyed a passion for the studio arts and an interest in art history. I ardently pursued these areas in college, continuing their exploration in graduate school in the field of Industrial Design. For the thesis project, my objective is to foster in children an appreciation for art and, possibly, to help them develop a critical and appreciative eye toward their environment. In my research, I find inspiration in child psychology and the toys of child's play, in 15th-century Islamic art and 20th-century Abstraction, and in naturally occurring events such as ivy twisting up a knotty tree trunk and soft ripples in a pond. The assimilation of these elements, together with the ideas that they generate, evolve into the foundation for my project. My intent is to design a toy which provides children ages six to twelve years with insight into both the world of nature and the realm of art. Further, the toy will heighten each child's visual vocabulary to acknowledge the organic, natural line that exists in nature and which is, perhaps, represented in abstract art. These goals are the guiding principles for my work. / Master of Science

A análise propõe questões sobre seu papel no enfrentamento aos mi-tos urbanos contemporâneos, assim como dialoga e se relaciona com a manifesta-ção dos Bate-bolas dos subúrbios do Rio de Janeiro. A toy art é um suporte ex-pressivo contemporâneo que contém elementos do grafite, do design, e da street art. Apresenta uma narrativa da cidade com violência e humor ácido. O consu-mismo e a pós modernidade são necessariamente investigados ao se estudar o uni-verso da toy art, ou designer toy, assim como as tribos urbanas. Sua forma é a de um brinquedo e sua narrativa é explicitamente adulta. A pesquisa aplicada produz uma linha de toy arts baseados na estética dos Bate-bolas do subúrbio carioca, uma manifestação cultural tradicional do carnaval. O intuito é conhecer os processos que envolvem a produção do objeto assim como as possibilidades de conexões entre o universo pop e a cultura urbana em uma dimensão regional e nacional. / [en] This thesis analyzes the narrative of toy art, focusing on its history and relations with Pop culture. The analysis proposes questions about its role in confronting contemporary urban myths, as well as dialogues and relates to the manifestation of the Bate-bolas in the suburbs from Rio de Janeiro. Toy art is a contemporary expressive medium that contains elements of graffiti, design, and street art. It pre-sents a narrative of the city with violence and acid humor. Consumerism and postmodernity are necessarily investigated when studying the universe of toy art, or designer toy, as well as urban tribes. Its shape is a toy shape and its narrative is explicitly adult. The applied research produces a line of toys based on the aesthetics of Bate-bolas in the suburb of Rio, a traditional cultural manifestation of carnival. The aim is to know the processes that involve the production of the object, as well as the possi-bilities of connections between the pop universe and urban culture in a regional and national dimension.
