A transitividade verbal: uma revisão semântico-pragmática / The verbal transitivity: one revision semantics-pragmaticsLaila Maria Hamdan Alvim 30 March 2006 (has links)
This theory approaches the theme Verbal Transitivity starting from the predicative constructions found in corpus of the printed of Brazil journalistic language. The verbs are studied according to solitary occurrences of newspapers of great circulation in three capitals. It is taken the semantics, the pragmatic and the syntax as potential determinant of the verbal transitivity and the theme second historical perspective is approached, in other words, it tries to draw the course of the theme in the studies of portuguese language from her first grammar, being arrived, then, to more current reflections and also to the treatment released to the verbs and her predicative construction in dictionaries and in pedagogic grammars. The confrontation with studies concerning the spanish language is also reason attention for, due to the proximity that the theme presents in the two languages. To leave of those studies, it is looked for to elaborate systematic and more coherent picture of the verbs according to the transitivity, trying to ally the solid theoretical base presented by the tradition of the grammatical studies to the awake technician-scientific reflections with the lifted up linguistic reality starting from the corpus

A Defense of TransitivityJanuary 2015 (has links)
abstract: This thesis seeks to defend transitivity as a rational constraint on preferences against two putative counterexamples to transitivity. This thesis is divided into three sections. In the first section, I consider two famous and popular arguments in defense of transitivity and argue they are insufficient to adequately defend transitivity. I then outline a desiderata for successful arguments in defense of transitivity and identify some basic assumptions I will be making throughout the thesis. In section two, I consider the first putative counterexample to transitivity: Quinn’s Puzzle of the Self-Torturer. I offer two plausible interpretations of Quinn’s puzzle and argue that both fail. One because it does not genuinely induce intransitive preferences, and the other because the situation it requires is logically impossible. I conclude this section by defending my arguments against known objections in the literature. Finally, in the third section, I consider a counterexample to transitivity from Larry Temkin that has received little attention in the literature. I argue that while the initial counterexample is unpersuasive it can be augmented and made into a more forceful argument. I then argue that this improved counterexample fails due to some erroneous assumptions prevalent in the literature on incomparability. I conclude the thesis with a brief summary and some closing remarks. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Philosophy 2015

A study of the ideational metafunction in Achebe’s things fall apart: A monogeneric corpus-based analysisKapau, Humphrey M. January 2021 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / This study investigates the ideational metafunction in Achebe’s Things Fall Apart in order to explore the characterisation of Okonkwo, Unoka, Ezinma, Ekwefi and Mr. Brown. The study confines itself to the following objectives, namely, to identify process-types attributed to characters; identify the transitivity patterns embedded in process-types attributed to characters; establish the significance of transitivity patterns attributed in the characterisation; and establish the significance of process-type collocations in projecting the development of characters in the story. The present undertaking is drawn from the theoretical frontiers of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and the analytical lens of transitivity model, backed by the methodological locale of Corpus Linguistics (CL). The study reveals that although Okonkwo, Unoka, Ezinma, Ekwefi and Mr. Brown are attributed material processes (MaPs); mental processes (MePs); relational processes (RePs); and verbal processes (VePs), significant differences exist not only in how the allotted process-types are mapped per character but also on how they impact on characterisation. / 2023

The Upper Domatic Number of a GraphHaynes, Teresa W., Hedetniemi, Jason T., Hedetniemi, Stephen T., McRae, Alice, Phillips, Nicholas 02 January 2020 (has links)
Let (Formula presented.) be a graph. For two disjoint sets of vertices (Formula presented.) and (Formula presented.), set (Formula presented.) dominates set (Formula presented.) if every vertex in (Formula presented.) is adjacent to at least one vertex in (Formula presented.). In this paper we introduce the upper domatic number (Formula presented.), which equals the maximum order (Formula presented.) of a vertex partition (Formula presented.) such that for every (Formula presented.), (Formula presented.), either (Formula presented.) dominates (Formula presented.) or (Formula presented.) dominates (Formula presented.), or both. We study properties of the upper domatic number of a graph, determine bounds on (Formula presented.), and compare (Formula presented.) to a related parameter, the transitivity (Formula presented.) of (Formula presented.).

Oorsaaklikheid en oorganklikheid in Afrikaans : `n kognitiewe benaderingZulu, Sylvia Phiwani January 2000 (has links)

= Engl: In this dissertation I am reporting the results of the research that I did within the framework of Cognitive Rhetoric regarding the relationship between causality and transitivity in Afrikaans. After describing the nature of causality based on the most recent literature in this regard, I demonstrate how causality, along with other elements of meaning such as image s enemas, conceptual metaphors and semantic roles form the basis of how humans think and-talk about the-interactions-around-them that they term transitive events. / National Research Foundation

Transitivité et marquage d'objet différentiel / Transitivity and differential object markingBilous, Rostyslav 05 January 2012 (has links)
This thesis deals with direct object nouns case-marked differentially. According to the commonly assumed generalization nouns marked with ACC case are prototypical objects representing high transitivity, whereas nouns marked with non-accusative cases are not. However, such a view ignores the possibility of a much finer distinction and fails to account for empirical data from languages with rich case morphology, such as Ukrainian. Given the complexity of the phenomenon under study the main objective of our investigation is to account exhaustively for all possible instances of non-accusative case marking and case alternations on direct objects in Ukrainian trying to classify and analyze the data by specifying the factors that condition the distinction ‘accusative versus non-accusative case marking’ and by integrating the phenomenon of differential object marking (DOM) into a formal model. We present DOM as a phenomenon that, together with the phenomenon of unaccusativity, can be subsumed under a broader concept of non-accusativity (defined as inability of verbs to assign ACC case). In this context we show that in Ukrainian and French morphosyntactic case realization has semantic underpinnings and that issues related to case valuation emanate from the intersection of different phenomena – DOM and nominal incorporation, DOM and verb typology, DOM and the process of (de)transitivization, and so on. However, the (morphosyntactic) visibility of those points of intersection varies from one language to another. Generativist distinction between syntactic (abstract) and morphological cases as well as the functionalist idea that case markings can be characterized as morphemes having different functional applications constitute the basis of our analysis of data. Using the typological views of these two approaches on the category of case as guidelines in our classification of collected data, we resort to minimalist formalism. Case is treated as an uninterpretable feature and a clear distinction is drawn between two types of case valuation – case checking and case assignment. Structural cases are checked during verb-raising and inherent (lexical) cases (among which we find predicate and default cases) are assigned either by a weak (or defective) v or by (an overt or null) preposition (P) in situ.
