Hybrid RANS/LES investigation of free-surface effects on tidal stream turbine wake and signatures

The predictive capabilities of blade-resolved unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) and detached eddy simulation (DES), the most commonly used hybrid RANS/large eddy simulation (LES) model, are assessed for hydrokinetic turbine performance and mean and turbulent flows in the intermediate-wake region, and results for a range of tip-speed ratio encompassing design and off-design conditions are analyzed to understand the wake recovery mechanism. The performance predictions compared within 5% of the experimental data. Both URANS and DES models performed reasonably well for the near wake predictions, where the errors were < 15%. DES outperformed URANS for both mean wake deficit and turbulence predictions in the intermediate-wake region and both quantities compared within 10% of the experiments. The improved prediction by DES is because of 1) its ability to predict the tip vortex breakdown, which plays a critical role in the wake recovery, especially for higher tip speed ratios; 2) the presence of the free-surface which created an upper bypass region of accelerated flow. The study reveals that the tip vortex breakdown mechanism depends on tip speed ratio. For lower values of tip speed ratio, instabilities generated in the root vortex core are identified to be the cause of breakdown. For higher values, the breakdown occurred because of the instabilities generated during the vortex filament entanglement. The presence of the free-surface led to an early vortex breakdown and the interaction between the wake and free-surface is initiated by the interaction of stanchion with the free-surface. Future work should focus on investigation of other hybrid RANS/LES models to address the limitations of the DES models, and extension of the study to include wave effects.

A computational fluid dynamics study of the near surface wind patterns over a desert dune and the effect on seed dispersion

Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This project originated when a team of scientists at the Gobabeb training and research and centre observed seed accumulation sites on the slope of sand dunes in the Namib Desert. Seeds that accumulate on the slip face of a sand dune provide food for small desert creatures that in turn attract larger animals, resulting in a small ecosystem on the side of the dune. Since wind is the primary transport of seeds throughout the Namib Desert it is of interest to investigate wind patterns over the dune. In this project it is therefore desired to look at seed dynamics and deposition as a result of near surface wind patterns around a three-dimensional dune geometry using computational fluid dynamics. The project is a joint venture between the University of Stellenbosch and the University of Namibia. This document presents the South African MScEng thesis part. The literature review shows the dominant winds in the Namib Desert to be from the south to westerly direction. Previous studies on air flow over dunes focussed on sand movement and were often limited to simplified two-dimensional geometries and steady state simulations. From these studies the basic flow features associated with dunes can be identified. Lastly, factors that influence particle dynamics around dune geometries are looked at. These particle studies mostly involve the movement of sand rather than seeds but still provide valuable insight. The project methodology is explained and includes the equipment used, the considerations taken into account, the simplifications made as well as the procedure followed when conducting field work and simulations. A section of an actual Namibian linear dune is mapped in order to obtain a geometry for the simulations. Flow measurements are carried out with a wind mast to obtain velocity profile inlet conditions for the simulations. Furthermore, seed sampling is done by the collaborating Namibian team of which the data is used to obtain an effective seed particle model. Lastly, simulations are carried out using primarily OpenFOAM-1.5. The simulations look at general near surface wind patterns, time dependant flow features and particle movement and seed deposition around and on the linear dune. The results show different wind profiles for different wind direction. It is also possible to see how the profile changes as the flow accelerates up the dune slope. Two-dimensional results provide the opportunity to compare results with previous studies as well as to provide the basis for looking at aspects such as differencing schemes, turbulence models and parallel computing before three-dimensional simulations are carried out. The importance of higher order differencing schemes are confirmed in the two-dimensional results. The turbulence models, however, produce very similar results. The results from the two- and three-dimensional results show typical flow features associated with dunes. Transient flow features and separation vortex structures can be identified from time dependant simulations. Furthermore, particle simulations reveal how particles tend to be trapped in the recirculation regions. The conclusions explain how the project objectives were achieved and provide recommendations for future studies related to this project. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die projek het ontstaan toe naforsers areas van saad akumulasie op die hellings van duine in Namibë opgelet het. Hierdie akumulasie van plant materiaal verskaf die voedsel vir klein diere op die duin wat ‘n klein ekosisteem tot gevolg het. Aaangesien die primêre vervoermiddel vir sade in die woestyn wind is beoog die projek om deur die wind patrone oor die duin beter te verstaan die saad verspreiding te beskryf. Die doel is dus om saad verspreiding en akumulasie te beskryf deur die wind patrone te bekyk wat die verspreiding tot gevolg het deur gebruik te maak van numeriese vloei dinamika. Die projek is ‘n saamgestelde projek tussen die Universiteit van Stellenbosch en die Universiteit van Namibië. Hierdie dokument behels die Suid Afrikaanse MScIng gedeelte van die projek. Laastens kyk die simulasies veral na algemene vloei patrone, tyd afhanklike vloei effekte en ook partikel beweging in die vloei veld. Die resultate wys hoe wind profiele verskil wat van verskillende rigtings af waai. Dit is ook moontlik on te wys hoe die wind profiele verander soos die wind versnel teen die duin op. Tweedimensionele simulasies verskaf die geleentheid om te kyk na die effek van verkillende numeriese modelle, turbulensie modelle en ook multi-prosesseerder verwerking. Tydens die twee-dimensionele simulasies is die belangrikheid van hoër orde numeriese metodes besef. Die verkillende turbulensie modelle het egter klein verkille gewys. Alby die twee- en driedimensionele resultate wys karakteristieke vloei patrone wat met duine geasosieer kan word. Verder het tyd afhanklike simulasies gewys hoe wind patrone verander met tyd. Die partikel simulasies wys ook die beweging van partikels deur die wind en hoe dit neig om te akumuleer in die hersirkulasie gebied agter die duin. Die gevolgtrekkings wys dat al die doelstellings bereik is en maak voorstelle vir toekomstige studies wat met hierdie studie verband hou.

Neste trabalho, buscou-se investigar a aplicação de uma modelagem RANS, com a utilização do modelo de turbulência das Tensões de Reynolds (RSTM), na modelagem do escoamento de gás no interior de ciclones, especialmente na simulação do movimento periódico do vórtice, conhecido como Precessing Vortex Core (PVC), com apoio da Fluidodinâmica Computacional. Utilizou-se o pacote de CFD de código aberto OpenFOAM, e as simulações foram realizadas em regime transiente. Dois modelos RSTM foram testados, o modelo LRR com os valores padrões para as constantes e uma modificação das constantes do termo de redistribuição. Compararam-se os resultados obtidos com dados da literatura e verificou-se que ambos os modelos representaram o campo médio de velocidade. No entanto, somente o modelo LRR conseguiu reproduzir o campo de flutuações de velocidade. Detectou-se o movimento de precessão do vórtice, que pode ser visualizado através de imagens sequenciais do escoamento, e uma frequência característica do movimento pode ser calculada através do Espectro de potência. / The flow field of a gas cyclone was simulated with a RANS model using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and the Precession of the Vortex Core (PVC) was investigated. The CFD simulations were carried out using the open source code OpenFOAM and the simulations were performed in a transient regime. Two Reynolds Stress Turbulence Models (RSTM) were investigated - the LRR model with standard constants and another with modified constants in the pressure-strain term. The results obtained by the models were compared with values of mean velocity taken from the literature and predictions were satisfactory. However, only the LRR model with standard constants predicted with precision the fluctuation velocity field. The precessing vortex was detected and illustrated by the flow field visualization and a characteristic frequency was calculated by Power Spectrum Density.

Esta tese apresenta o desenvolvimento e aplicação de modelos de turbulência, transição laminar-turbulenta e de interações fluido-estrutura ao escoamento externo em cilindro rígido estacionário e em vibrações induzidas por vórtices. Tais desenvolvimentos foram realizados no código ReFRESCO, baseado em técnicas de dinâmica de fluidos computacional (CFD). Realizou-se um estudo quanto ao desempenho do modelo k- SST em extensa faixa de números de Reynolds, segundo o qual se identificaram as deficiências de modelagem para este escoamento. A modelagem adaptativa das escalas (SAS) e o modelo de transição por correlações locais (LCTM), ambos combinados ao SST, melhoraram a aderência aos resultados experimentais para este escoamento, em uma contribuição original deste trabalho. A aplicação de técnicas de verificação e validação possibilitou a estimação de incertezas e erros para os modelos e números de Reynolds e também de identificada como outra contribuição deste trabalho. A combinação da modelagem em SST, SAS e LCTM com movimentos impostos de realizada para números de Reynolds moderados, diferentes frequências e amplitudes de vibração, algo que poucas publicações abordam em detalhes. Com relação aos movimentos livres, este trabalho traz contribuições com a aplicação dos modelos SST e SAS ao estudo de vibrações induzidas por vórtices em dois graus de liberdade, baixa razão de massa e números de Reynolds moderados, mais altos do que normalmente observados na literatura. Por fim, a investigação da importância relativa de efeitos da turbulência aos casos de movimentos livres e impostos, com relação ao caso de cilindro estacionário, comprovou a conjetura formulada na parte inicial deste trabalho, no que tange à escolha do modelo de turbulência em determinadas aplicações. Tal escolha mostrou-se menos decisiva no caso do cilindro em movimento imposto e ainda menos nos movimentos livres, em comparação ao caso estacionário, uma vez que a resposta em movimentos do corpo filtra grande parte dos efeitos turbulentos de ordem superior. Esta observação mostra-se relevante, uma vez que pode permitir simplificações na modelagem e aplicação de ferramentas de CFD em uma classe importante de projetos de engenharia. / This thesis presents the development, implementation and application of turbulence and laminar-turbulent transition models and fuid-structure capabilities to address the vortexshedding and vortex-induced vibrations of a rigid cylinder. These numerical developments have been carried out in the computational fuid dynamics (CFD) code ReFRESCO. In the current work, an investigation of the performance of the turbulence modeling with k- SST in a broad range of Reynolds numbers is carried out identifying its modeling deficiencies for this fow. The implementation and systematic application of the scale adaptive simulations (SAS) and the local correlation transition model (LCTM), both combined with the SST, have improved the agreement with experimental results for the cylinder ow, in a novel contribution of this work. The application of verification and validation technique has allowed the estimation of numerical errors and uncertainties for the diferent models. That is also identified as a contribution of this thesis. The combination of SST modeling with imposed motions is carried out as well as with the SAS and LCTM for moderate Reynolds numbers, diferent vibration frequencies and amplitudes, which is considered novel, as few publications address this issue in extent. Regarding the free-moving cylinder capabilities, the present work brings contributions with the application of SST and SASSST with free-moving cylinder for the study of VIV of two degrees of-freedom, low mass ratio and moderate Reynolds numbers, higher than commonly seen in the literature. Finally, the investigation of the relative importance of turbulence effects on the freemoving cylinder and the imposed-motions case, with respect to the fixed case is carried out. A natural conjecture that has been raised early on this work and proved correct is that, for engineering applications, the choice of turbulence modeling strategy is less decisive when the cylinder is moving with prescribed motion and even less stringent, for free motions as the body response filters most of the higher order turbulence effects. That is a relevant observation as it might allow modeling simplifications and the application of CFD tools to a range of engineering problems.

Estudo numérico de chamas turbulentas não pré-misturadas através de modelos baseados no conceito de flamelets

A simulação numérica de chamas turbulentas é ainda hoje um desafio para as práticas de mecânica dos fluidos computacional. Compreendendo que as abordagens numéricas mais completas e realísticas atualmente disponíveis podem ser computacionalmente proibitivas, diversos modelos vêm sendo desenvolvidos com o objetivo de reproduzir os fenômenos envolvidos na combustão de uma forma simplificada, mas ainda fisicamente consistente. Este trabalho é, portanto, dedicado à comparação de diferentes modelos de fechamento para a turbulência baseados nas equações de Navier-Stokes em médias de Reynolds e de modelos para simplificação da cinética química baseados no conceito de flamelets, com e sem a modelagem da radiação térmica, esta última através do modelo de soma-ponderada-de-gasescinzas. Para tanto, na primeira parte do presente trabalho são comparados seis modelos de turbulência na solução de um jato turbulento de propano, não reativo e isotérmico, circundado por uma corrente paralela de ar, quanto a sua eficiência na predição dos valores médios da velocidade longitudinal e transversal, fração mássica de propano e massa específica da mistura. Os modelos são o k- Padrão (empregado na sua versão original e com mais duas modificações nas suas constantes conforme propostas encontradas na literatura), o k- Realizable, o k- Padrão e o k- Shear-Stress Transport. Um dos modelos de melhor desempenho é então usado na simulação de uma chama turbulenta não pré-misturada de metano/hidrogênio/nitrogênio circundada por um escoamento coaxial de ar de baixa velocidade, no qual são então comparados os modelos para redução da cinética química baseados no conceito de flamelets, o Steady Laminar Diffusion Flamelet (SLDF) e o Flamelet-Generated Manifold (FGM), tendo os seus resultados comparados aos dados experimentais para os valores médios da velocidade longitudinal, fração de mistura, temperatura e frações mássicas das espécies químicas. Dentre os modelos de turbulência avaliados, é observado que as duas versões ajustadas do k- Padrão e o k- Padrão se mostraram com melhor concordância em relação às medições experimentais do que os demais. No presente estudo é também avaliada a consistência dos dados experimentais reportados e uma discrepância é identificada neste jato, mas que, conforme verificado, não compromete a comparação dos modelos aqui proposta. Na solução do escoamento reativo, o modelo SLDF se mostrou com resultados bastante próximos aos resultados experimentais (exceto para o NO), sendo aprimorados ainda mais com a inclusão da modelagem da radiação térmica, sobretudo para regiões mais distantes do bico injetor do combustível, após o pico de temperatura da chama. O modelo FGM, contudo, apresentou resultados muito aquém dos esperados, sobretudo para as frações mássicas das espécies químicas, mesmo utilizando malhas com nível de refinamento muito maior e com o teste de diversas combinações de espécies para a variável de progresso da reação, e no qual a inclusão da radiação na modelagem também não trouxe benefícios perceptíveis. Todas as simulações numéricas foram realizadas empregando o código comercial ANSYS Fluent, versão 15.0.0. / The numerical simulation of turbulent flames is still a challenge for today's computational fluid dynamics practices. Understanding that the most complete and realistic numerical approaches available today may be computationally prohibitive, several models have been developed in order to reproduce the phenomena involved in combustion in a simplified, but still physically consistent, way. Therefore, this work is dedicated to compare different models for turbulence closure based on the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations and models for simplification of the chemical kinetics based on the flamelet concept, with and without thermal radiation modeling through the weighted-sum-of-gray-gases model. Thus, in the first part of the current work six turbulence models are employed to solve a turbulent nonreactive isothermal flow, a propane jet surrounded by a parallel stream of air. The models are compared through their effectiveness in predicting the mean values of longitudinal and transversal velocities, propane mass fraction and mixture density. The models are the Standard k- (employed in its original version and with two modifications according to proposals found in the literature), the Realizable k- , the Standard k- and the Shear-Stress Transport k- . One of the best performing models is then used to simulate a turbulent nonpremixed flame of methane/hydrogen/nitrogen surrounded by a low-velocity air coflow, in which are compared the models to reduce the chemical kinetics based on the flamelets concept, the Steady Laminar Diffusion Flamelet (SLDF) and the Flamelet-Generated Manifold (FGM), being the numerical results compared to the experimental data for the mean values of longitudinal velocity, mixture fraction, temperature and species mass fractions. Among the six turbulence models evaluated, it is observed that the two adjusted versions of the Standard k- and the Standard k- showed better agreement with the experimental measurements than the other models. In the current study it is also evaluated the consistency of the reported experimental data and a discrepancy is identified, which, as verified, does not compromise the models comparison here proposed. In the solution of the reactive flow, the SLDF model showed results very close to the experimental results (except for NO), being further enhanced with the inclusion of the thermal radiation modeling, especially for regions far from fuel nozzle, after the peak of temperature of the flame. The FGM model, however, showed results far below the expected, especially for the mass fractions of chemical species, even using meshes with much higher refinement level and testing of various species combinations for the reaction progress variable. The inclusion of the radiation modeling did not brought noticeable benefits. All the numerical simulations were performed employing the ANSYS Fluent version 15.0.0 commercial code.

Análise experimental e numérica de convecção forçada em arranjo de obstáculos dentro de canal /

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho é a análise numérica e experimental de escoamento viscoso, incompressível, permanente, com transferência de calor, em um canal estreito contendo um arranjo de obstáculos retangulares. A análise experimental envolveu determinação de coeficiente de transferência de calor médio bem como o número de Nusselt médio e medidas de temperatura em esteira térmica para comparação com os resultados obtidos por simulação numérica. Para a análise numérica usamos o programa comercial de mecânica dos fluidos e transferência de calor computacional ICEPAK®. Verificamos que quanto mais adentro o obstáculo estiver no arranjo maior é a transferência de calor por convecção forçada. Determinamos coeficientes de transferência de calor médio e número de Nusselt médio (com incerteza entre 6 e 15%) e verificamos que o efeito da posição diminui à medida que a velocidade aumenta. Concluímos também que ambos os modelos de turbulência utilizados, k-ε padrão e k-ε RNG, foram incapazes de predizer o efeito da posição apropriadamente. Entretanto, o modelo k-ε RNG apresentou melhor comportamento, pois o seu uso resultou em soluções com valores de temperatura intermediários aos experimentais / Abstract: The purpose of this work is the study of the numerical and experimental viscous incompressible steady flow with heat transfer into a narrow channel containing a rectangular array of obstacles. The experimental approach involves determining the coefficient of heat transfer and temperature measurements in thermal wake for comparison with the results obtained in numerical simulations. For the numerical analysis we use the commercial program of fluid mechanics and heat transfer computational ICEPAK™. We confirmed that in the last lines of the array the biggest is the heat transfer by forced convection. We determined the average heat transfer coefficients (with uncertainty between 6 and 15%) and found that the effect of the position decreases as flow speed increases. We use in the simulations the k-ε turbulence model and the k-ε RNG turbulence model. We conclude that both turbulence models used were unable to predict the effect of the position properly. However, the k-ε RNG model showed better behavior. Estudos sobre a instabilidade aeroelástica em estruturas de pontes suspensas têm adquirido relevante destaque no âmbito das pesquisas em engenharia do vento nos últimos anos, haja vista que as definições resultantes dessa análise apresentam informações essenciais ao projeto, cálculo e concepção desse tipo de estrutura. Considerando que os escoamentos ao redor de pontes suspensas apresentam características turbulentas, o conhecimento acerca desse fenômeno torna-se fundamental para a análise da interação vento-ponte, estabelecendo a turbulência como uma importante e complexa vertente dentro dessa pesquisa. Nesse contexto, o presente trabalho visa contribuir com o tema através da análise numérica da ação do vento na seção transversal do tabuleiro de pontes suspensas, verificando seu comportamento quando estiverem submetidas à ação dos esforços provenientes do vento na interação de um escoamento turbulento com o tabuleiro da ponte. No trabalho foi investigada a atuação dos esforços aerodinâmicos na estrutura da ponte, ensejando na obtenção dos coeficientes aerodinâmicos de arrasto, sustentação e momento. Também foi analisado o comportamento do tabuleiro para o surgimento das vibrações induzidas por vórtices, permitindo o cálculo da frequência de desprendimento de vórtices e determinação do número de Strouhal. No que tange aos esforços aeroelásticos para o estudo específico do drapejamento (flutter), foram avaliadas as amplitudes de deslocamentos torcionais para o cálculo e obtenção da velocidade crítica do vento que acarreta o fenômeno do flutter. Juntamente com as análises aerodinâmicas e aeroelásticas da seção transversal da ponte, diferentes modelos de turbulência foram aplicados nas simulações para se estabelecer uma análise comparativa entre os escoamentos. As simulações computacionais desenvolvidas e apresentadas neste trabalho foram realizadas com auxílio de um programa de CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics). Os modelos de ponte utilizados no trabalho foram o da ponte suspensa Great Belt East, localizada na Dinamarca e da ponte estaiada Sunshine Skyway, localizada nos Estados Unidos. Para validação da técnica computacional, os resultados das simulações foram comparados com dados numéricos e experimentais disponíveis na literatura. / Researches about aeroelastic instability in long span suspension bridges have been consistently the focus in wind engineering field in recent years, therefore the definitions from that study present essential information to design and construction of this type of road structure. Considering that fluid flows around bridges show some turbulent features, the knowledge about turbulence become critical for this wind-bridge interaction analysis, establishing the turbulence modeling study as an important and complex part within that research. According to this context, the meaning of this research was to contribute with numerical analysis of wind effects on a suspension bridge deck, verifying its behavior when this model is subjected to the action of wind loads from a turbulent fluid flow. The bridge aerodynamic behaviour was investigated and aerodynamic coefficients of drag, lift and moment were calculated. Flow induced vibrations were also analyzed for the bridge deck model, allowing it to obtain the vortex shedding frequency and Strouhal number. With regard to aeroelasticity and focusing on flutter study, the amplitudes of torsional displacements were evaluated as well as the analysis of critical wind velocity that causes flutter instabilities. Along with aerodynamic and aeroelastic analysis of the bridge deck cross sectional, fluid flow features were studied and compared applying several turbulence models to simulations. The numerical approach developed and shown in this work was performed by CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) software. The bridge deck models used at this dissertation were the Great Belt East suspension bridge, located in Denmark and the Sunshine Skyway cable stayed bridge, located in USA. In order to validate the computational technique, simulation results from this research were compared with numerical and experimental test data available in papers and literature.

Numerical Modeling of Thermal/Saline Discharges in Coastal Waters

Liquid waste discharged from industrial outfalls is categorized into two major classes based on their density. One type is the effluent that has a higher density than that of the ambient water body. In this case, the discharged effluent has a tendency to sink as a negatively buoyant jet. The second type is the effluent that has a lower density than that of the ambient water body and is hence defined as a (positively) buoyant jet that causes the effluent to rise. Negatively/Positively buoyant jets are found in various civil and environmental engineering projects: discharges of desalination plants, discharges of cooling water from nuclear power plants turbines, mixing chambers, etc. This thesis investigated the mixing and dispersion characteristics of such jets numerically. In this thesis, mixing behavior of these jets is studied using a finite volume model (OpenFOAM). Various turbulence models have been applied in the numerical model to assess the accuracy of turbulence models in predicting the effluent discharges in submerged outfalls. Four Linear Eddy Viscosity Models (LEVMs) are used in the positively buoyant wall jet model for discharging of heated waste including: standard k-ε, RNG k-ε, realizable k-ε and SST k-ω turbulence models. It was found that RNG k-ε, and realizable k-ε turbulence models performed better among the four models chosen. Then, in the next step, numerical simulations of 30˚ and 45˚ inclined dense turbulent jets in stationary ambient water have been conducted. These two angles are examined in this study due to lower terminal rise height for 30˚ and 45˚, which is very important for discharges of effluent in shallow waters compared to higher angles. Five Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) turbulence models are applied to evaluate the accuracy of CFD predictions. These models include two LEVMs: RNG k-ε, and realizable k-ε; one Nonlinear Eddy Viscosity Model (NLEVM): Nonlinear k-ε; and two Reynolds Stress Models (RSMs): LRR and Launder-Gibson. It has been observed that the LRR turbulence model as well as the realizable k-ε model predict the flow more accurately among the various turbulence models studied herein.

Análise numérica e experimental do escoamento em motores de combustão interna

O objetivo do trabalho é o desenvolvimento e a validação de metodologias para simular o comportamento dinâmico do escoamento e da transferência de calor em motores de combustão interna. O trabalho está dividido em duas partes. Na primeira parte, para caracterizar o sistema de admissão de motores de combustão interna, foi fixada a pressão na descarga em diferentes aberturas de válvulas em regime permanente. As análises foram realizadas a partir do coeficiente de descarga. Os dados numéricos foram obtidos utilizando o código comercial de volumes finitos Fluent e comparado com resultados experimentais. O escoamento turbulento foi resolvido com o modelo de viscosidade turbulenta k-ε e k-ε RNG, com aproximação de alto Reynolds e tratamento padrão nas regiões próximas às paredes. O estudo da independência de malha foi realizado partindo-se de uma malha tetra-prisma com subcamadas de 0,02 mm para assegurar o tratamento adequado na parede. Por fim, foi realizada uma análise em regime transiente, comparando-se os resultados do coeficiente de descarga com a utilização de tratamento híbrido e padrão nas zonas próximas às paredes. Como resultado, obteve-se boa concordância entre essas formas. Na segunda parte, é feita uma análise do escoamento transiente na admissão e no interior do cilindro em um motor padrão CFR. O motor foi tracionado com um motor elétrico a 200 rpm sem combustão. Neste, foram empregadas soluções numéricas com a utilização do código comercial em volumes finitos StarCD es-ice, com malha móvel hexaédrica. Os resultados experimentais do coeficiente de descarga, pressão e temperatura foram comparados durante o ciclo. O escoamento turbulento foi resolvido com o modelo de viscosidade turbulenta k-ω SST, com aproximação de baixo Reynols e tratamento híbrido nas regiões próximas às paredes. O estudo da independência de malha foi realizado a partir do coeficiente de descarga na máxima velocidade do êmbolo a 75 graus após o ponto morto superior do ciclo de admissão. Os resultados revelaram a formação de swirl, tumble e cross-tumble e a evolução destes durante o ciclo, como uma informação importante para o desenho da geometria dos coletores de admissão e de escape nos motores de combustão interna. Foi detectada a presença de recirculações nos coletores e no cilindro. Estas foram discutidas ao longo dos resultados. / The objective of the present work is to develop and validate methodologies to simulate the flow dynamics and heat transfer in internal combustion engines. The work is composed by two parts. In the first one, the intake systems of internal combustion engines are simulated considering the steady flow, with fixed pressure drops across the system, at different valve lifts. A discharge coefficient is calculated, based on numerical solutions using the Fluent 6.3 commercial Finite Volumes CFD code and compared with experimental results. Regarding the turbulence, computations are performed with Eddy Viscosity Models k-ε, in its High- Reynolds approach and k-ε RNG variant was also tested. A detailed mesh independence study was performed, arriving in a submillimeter mesh of 523000 tetra-prism cells, including an extrusion layer of 0.02 mm, to assure an adequate wall treatment. This analysis was made considering a transient flow, comparing the results of the discharge coefficient using hybrid treatment and standard in the near wall region, with good agreement. The second part of the present work focuses on a transient flow that occurs in the intake system and inside cylinder of a standard CFR (Cooperative Fuel Research) engine. As a first step the engine has no combustion, but is driven by an electrical motor that provides the desired angular velocity, in this case 200 rpm. Numerical solutions using the StarCD es-ice commercial Finite Volumes CFD code are performed, applying moving hexahedral trimmed meshes, and compared with experimental results of discharge coefficient, pressure and temperature in the cylinder. Regarding the turbulence, computations were performed with Eddy Viscosity Models k-ω SST, in its Low Reynolds approach with hybrid treatment near the walls. A mesh independence study was performed through discharge coefficient, in the maximum piston velocity, at 75 degrees after top dead center. The results revealed the presence of the swirl, tumble and cross-tumble flow patterns, important informations for the design of internal combustion engines. The presence of recirculation at the port and inside the cylinder is detected and discussed in detail.
