Torsion Pendulum Testing of the LISA Charge Management SystemDal Bosco, Davide 27 April 2023 (has links)
The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will be the first gravitational wave detector in space. The European Space Agency has selected LISA as a large mission scheduled to launch in the mid-2030s. The sensitivity of LISA to gravitational waves is limited at low frequencies by force disturbances acting on the otherwise free-falling test masses. Among the stray forces relevant to the LISA noise budget, we find the ones that arise from the electrostatic interaction between the test masses and the surrounding capacitive sensor. Most of such electrostatic forces scale with the electric charge deposited on the test masses. This problem is aggravated by the fact that isolated objects in space, such as the floating LISA test masses, accumulate electric charge due to the constant bombardment of cosmic rays and solar energetic particles. We, therefore, understand that if the test masses were not discharged, the electrostatic disturbances could spoil the performance of the whole mission at low frequency. The precursor LISA Pathfinder (LPF) mission proved that the test mass charge could be successfully managed with a contactless system based on photoelectric charge transfer. The light sources required for photoemission in LISA Pathfinder were mercury-vapor lamps emitting photons in the UV range. In this thesis, we will present our on-ground testing campaign of a prototype Charge Management System for LISA, which relies on UV-LEDs as light sources. LEDs, compared to mercury-vapor lamps, can emit short pulses of UV light (~10 ns), which can be synchronized with the time-varying electrostatic fields around the test mass. For this reason, we studied new discharge strategies made possible by adopting UV-LEDs characterized by pulsed illumination synced with the capacitive sensing injection bias. Our measurements indicate that UV-LEDs offer significant advantages regarding the flexibility and robustness of the Charge Management System. Moreover, the new illumination patterns offered by UV-LEDs allow fine-tuning the TM equilibrium potential without introducing local DC fields, easing the implementation of the continuous discharge mode to manage the TM potential. Finally, we investigated the charge noise introduced by the continuous discharge mode and verified that it could be kept within the LISA requirements. We will present hereafter the outline of the thesis. In the first chapter, we present a mandatory introduction to gravitational waves and the LISA mission. In the second chapter, we present the instrument used for our experimental campaign, namely the four-test-masses torsion pendulum at the University of Trento. We also present the electrostatic model and the measurement techniques used to evaluate the electric charge on the pendulum test mass.
In the third chapter, we introduce the concept of apparent yield, which is a figure of merit of the charge management system performance. We also present our experimental measurement, which encompasses tests on several UV-LEDs in different illumination patterns. In the fourth chapter, we derive a simple photoemission model, which is useful for interpreting the apparent yield data acquired. We will also use the model to fit the experimental data and extract estimates of the microscopic parameters that affect the photoemission from metallic surfaces, e.g. work function or quantum yield. In the fifth chapter, we present a model and our torsion pendulum measurements for the charge noise induced on the test masses when continuously illuminated with UV light. Such noise arises from the discrete and intrinsically stochastic nature of photoelectric charge transfer. Finally, in the last chapter, we will wrap up by presenting the problems encountered and the "lessons learned" during the years-long experimental endeavor.

Oxidation of Disinfection Byproducts and Algae-related Odorants by UV/H₂O₂Jo, Chang Hyun 24 September 2008 (has links)
This research involved an investigation of the application and reaction mechanisms of UV/H₂O₂ for the simultaneous removal of regulated halogenated disinfection byproducts (DBPs) and odorous aldehydic algal byproducts in the presence of geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol, which are earthy-musty odorants that commonly occur in drinking water. UV/H₂O₂ is an expensive advanced oxidation process that is used to successfully control geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol. The aqueous oxidation of odorous aldehydes and halogenated DPBs were compared to that of the earthy-musty odorants and the changes to the sensory properties of the drinking water were examined. Geosmin, 2-methylisoborneol, heptadienal, decadienal, and nonadienal, hexanal, and the two most prevalent classes of DBPs, trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) were oxidized by UV photolysis alone and the UV/H₂O₂ process with 6 mg/L H₂O₂ and realistic ng/l to μg/L concentrations of the test compounds.
The di-, and tri-brominated THMs and HAAs were substantially (80-99%) removed by direct UV photolysis mechanism at the same UV/H₂O₂ dose required for removing 95% of geosmin and 65% of 2-methylisoborneol with faster reaction rates for the more bromine substituted compounds. The C-Br bond cleavage is the first step of brominated HAAs degradation by UV photolysis, and followed by either of two second steps: reaction with oxygen producing peroxyl radical or interaction with water molecule causing O-H insertion/H-Br elimination.
Trichloromethane and mono-, di-, and tri-chlorinated HAAs were not substantially removed under the same conditions used for the brominated compounds. The principal removal mechanism was by the reaction with hydroxyl radical for the UV/H₂O₂ process. The second order reaction rate constants were on the order of 10⁶ - 10⁸ M⁻¹ s⁻¹ with faster reaction rates for the less chlorine substituted compounds. Based on the reaction rates, hydrogen and halogen ion balance, and isotope effect, both hydrogen abstraction and electron transfer reaction were involved in the first steps of the chlorinated HAA degradation.
Three odorous aldehydes - heptadienal, decadienal, and nonadienal - were removed faster than geosmin or 2-methylisoborneol, and direct UV photolysis was the principal reaction mechanism for the removal of these unsaturated aldehydes. Hexanal was poorly removed. In sensory tests, new odors such as sweet or chalky odors were produced while the concentration and initial odor intensity of these fishy/grassy-smelling aldehydes were reduced with increasing exposure time to UV/H₂O₂. Carbonyl compounds were detected as products of the UV photolysis of nonadienal. These carbonyls were not removed by further UV irradiation, which was thought to be partially related with production of new odors.
The results indicate that the UV/H₂O₂ is effective to control both odorous compounds and brominated DBPs. This process can be seasonally applied to control both contaminants especially, in the warm summer when both odorants and DBPs have their higher concentrations. Removal of brominated DBPs can be a significant addition to water utilities that have difficulty in meeting regulatory levels for these highly toxic compounds. The result on the removal of odorous aldehydes indicate that new types of odors were produced from the oxidation of odorous aldehydes suggesting sensory test coupled with chemical analysis should be considered in designing oxidation process to control recalcitrant odorants. / Ph. Magnetite, an iron oxide, is a possible candidate for in situ remediation of contaminated groundwater systems due to its oxidation/reduction potential for reduction of contaminants such as carbon tetrachloride. Little characterization and analysis has been done to describe the kinetics of magnetite transformation during oxidation. This work focuses on monitoring the concentrations of magnetite and one of its oxidation transformation products, maghemite, by the use of UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy. As oxidation proceeded at a constant specific temperature, the concentration of magnetite decreases, which was indicated by a decrease in absorption in the NIR-region of the spectrum. As magnetite concentrations decreased, the concentration of maghemite increased, which was indicated by an increase in absorption in the UV-region. The temperature at which the suspensions of magnetite and maghemite were measured was of great importance for complete understanding of the magnetite transformation as seen by UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy analysis. Higher measurement temperatures produced higher absorptivities of FeII-FeIII electron hopping transitions, while decreasing the absorptivity of FeIII-FeIII in the NIR and UV-regions respectively. Lower temperatures produced the opposite effects on the iron oxides' transitions. Higher temperature increased the rate of oxidation. / Master of Science

Non-migrating tides in the Martian thermosphereKumar, Aishwarya S. 02 August 2018 (has links)
Previous studies have identified longitudinal structures associated with non-migrating tides in observations of the upper neutral atmosphere of Mars. MAVEN’s Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrometer (IUVS) observations of the upper atmosphere reveal variations in density with longitude at altitudes of 130 – 200 km, and can be used to identify non-migrating tides. These observations cover higher latitudes and allow for studying the local time variations of tides. The analysis presented here shows that the longitudinal structure attributed to non-migrating tides is dominated by wavenumber 2 and wavenumber 3 harmonics during the periods studied. Comparison with the Neutral Ion and Gas Mass spectrometer (NGIMS) shows a good agreement in wave amplitudes observed for the first two cases studied. The temperatures and 𝑂/𝐶𝑂# ratios from the IUVS L2 data files revealed an anti-correlation with the densities which confirms the theoretical interpretation from the linear wave theory. / Master of Science / There are waves internal to all fluids in our surroundings and daily lives, such as sound waves. Waves in the atmosphere are also fluid in nature. In planetary atmospheres, the scale sizes of some of these waves become comparable to the size of the planet itself. The waves interact with the structure of the surface of Mars to form a certain type of wave called “Non-migrating tides”. These waves have been observed in multiple previous studies in the upper atmosphere of Mars (~130 km and above). These waves cause the atomic and molecular content of the upper atmosphere to be displaced in a particular manner to form a unique structure. The structures formed are observed on a scale that covers the entire planet. It is by studying these structures in the upper atmosphere that it is possible to characterize the waves that control them and thereby understand their nature and impact. Understanding how these waves vary helps spacecraft to gain better control over mechanisms required to swing them into the desired orbit (location).
This study uses the observations from an instrument aboard the MAVEN mission and compares it to the observations from another instrument aboard the same mission. The results of this study demonstrate that these “Non-migrating” tides play a vital role in controlling the behavior of the upper atmosphere.

No / Violacein is a bisindole pigment occurring as a biosynthetic product of Chromobacterium violaceum and Janthinobacterium lividum. It has some structural similarities to the cyanobacterial UV-protective pigment scytonemin, which has been the subject of comprehensive spectroscopic and structural studies. A detailed experimental Raman spectroscopic study with visible and near-infrared excitation of violacein produced by C. violaceum has been undertaken and supported using theoretical DFT calculations. Raman spectra with 514 and 785 nm excitation of cultivated cells as well as extracts and Gaussian (B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p)) calculations with proposed molecular vibrational assignments are reported here.

Effect of Ozone and Ultraviolet Irradiation Treatments on Listeria monocytogenes Populations in Chill BrinesDev Kumar, Govindaraj 10 December 2008 (has links)
The efficacy of ozone and ultraviolet light, used in combination, to inactivate Listeria monocytogenes in fresh (9% NaCl, 91.86% transmittance at 254 nm) and spent chill brines (20.5% NaCl, 0.01% transmittance at 254 nm) was determined. Preliminary studies were conducted to optimize parameters for the ozonation of "fresh" and "spent" brines. These include diffuser design, comparison of kit to standard methods to measure residual ozone, studying the effect of ozone on uridine absorbance and determining presence of residual listericidal activity post ozonation.
An ozone diffuser was designed using 3/16 inch PVC tubing for the ozonation of brines. The sparger was designed to facilitate better diffusion and its efficiency was tested. The modified sparger diffused 1.44 ppm of ozone after 30 minutes of ozonation and the solution had an excess of 1 ppm in 10 minutes of ozonating fresh brine solution (200ml). Population levels of L. monocytogenes were determined at various time intervals post-ozonation (0, 10, 20, 60 min) to determine the presence of residual listericidal activity. The population post ozonation (0 minutes) was 5.31 Log CFU/ml and was 5.08 Log CFU/ml after a 60 minute interval. Therefore, residual antimicrobial effect was weak. Accuracy of the Vacu-vial Ozone analysis kit was evaluated by comparing the performance of the kit to the standard indigo colorimetric method for measuring residual ozone. The kit was inaccurate in determining residual ozone levels of spent brines and 1% peptone water. Uridine was evaluated as a UV actinometric tool for brine solutions that were ozonated before UV treatment. The absorbance of uridine (A262) decreased after ozonation from 0.1329 to 0.0512 for standard 10 minutes UV exposure duration. Absorbance of uridine was influenced by ozone indicating that the presence of ozone may hamper UV fluence determination accuracy in ozone-treated solutions.
Upon completion of diffuser design and ozone/UV analysis studies, the effect of ozone-UV combination on L. monocytogenes in fresh and spent brines was evaluated. Ozonation, when applied for 5 minutes, caused a 5.29 mean Log reduction while 5 minutes of UV exposure resulted in a 1.09 mean Log reduction of L. monocytogenes cells in fresh brines. Ten minutes of ozonation led to a 7.44 mean Log reduction and 10 minutes of UV radiation caused a 1.95 mean Log reduction of Listeria in fresh brine.
Spent brines required 60 minutes of ozonation for a 4.97 mean Log reduction in L. monocytogenes counts, while 45 minutes resulted in a 4.04 mean Log reduction. Ten minutes of UV exposure of the spent brines resulted in 0.30 mean Log reduction in Listeria cells. A combination of 60 minutes ozonation and 10 minute UV exposure resulted in an excess of 5 log reduction in cell counts. Ozonation did not cause a sufficient increase in the transmittance of the spent brine to aid UV penetration but resulted in apparent color change as indicated by change in L*a*b* values. Ozonation for sufficient time had considerable listericidal activity in fresh brines and spent brines and when combined with UV treatment, is effective reducing L. monocytogenes to undetectable levels in fresh brines. / Master of Science in Life Sciences

Baigiamajame magistro darbe atliktas įprastų ir UV dažų palyginamasis kokybės tyrimas. Atliktas įprastų ir UV dažų atspaudų spalvinių charakterisikų palyginimas esant D50 ir D65 šviesos šaltiniams, ištirtas spalvų spausdinimo stabilumas. Nustatyta, kad įprastųjų ir UV dažų galimų spalvų diapazonas yra artimas esant D50 šviesos šaltiniui ir akivaizdžiai skiriasi esant D65 šviesos šaltiniui, kas rodo skirtingą fluorescencinio komponento indėlį. Eksperimentiškai ištirtos popieriaus ofsetinių atspaudų trinties savybės ir nustatyti statinis ir kinetinis trinties koeficientai. Nustatyta, kad įprastiniai ir UV dažai didina atspaudo į popierių statitinio trinties koeficiento dydį ir mažina kinetinio koeficiento dydį. Atliktas dviejų rūšių popieriaus su įprastais ir UV dažais šiurkštumo palyginamasis tyrimas ir nustatyta, kad įprasti dažai atspaudų paviršiaus šiukštumą stipriai didina, o UV dažų poveikis priklauso nuo popieriaus rūšies. Išnagrinėjus teorinius ir praktinius įprastų ir UV dažų skirtumus, pateikiamos baigiamojo darbo išvados ir siūlymai. Darbą sudaro 6 dalys: įvadas, apžvalga, eksperimentinė dalis, rezultatai ir jų aptarimas, išvados ir siūlymai, literatūros sąrašas. Atskirai pridedami darbo priedai. / In master of science thesis is investigated the quality of conventional and UV curable prints. Performed comparison between two types of inks color characteristics at illuminants D50 and D65 and examined colors printing stability. It was fund, that diapason of conventional and UV inks are more similar at illuminant D50 and it is significantly different at illuminant D65. Results mean, that fluorescence’s component is different in different type of inks. Experimentally investigated offset print’s friction properties and determined the static and kinetic coefficients of friction. Determined, that conventional and UV inks increase static friction coefficient and reduce kinetic friction coefficient between paper and print. Also, investigated two different types of paper and prints made with conventional and UV inks roughness properties comparison and determined, that conventional inks strongly increase roughness of prints surface and influence of UV inks depend on paper’s type. Le développement de nouvelles technologies pour le recyclage des eaux usées est une priorité pour les régions arides et semi-arides tels que les pays du bassin méditerranéen. L'objectif de ce travail a été, dans un premier temps, de développer un système de traitement tertiaire des eaux usées en testant l'efficacité de diodes électroluminescentes émettant des UV-A et/ou des UV-C (DEL-UV) sur l'inactivation de souches bactériennes indicatrices de pollution fécale (Escherichia coli et Enterococcus faecalis) puis sur des effluents urbains, en étudiant la diminution des pollutions microbiennes et chimiques. Cette première étape a mis en évidence l'efficacité accrue du couplage UV-A et UV-C, permettant d'obtenir une eau de qualité répondant aux exigences législatives relatives à la réutilisation des eaux usées pour l'irrigation. La deuxième partie de ce travail était l'étude de l'impact de l'arrosage avec des eaux usées traitées par DEL-UV sur les paramètres du sol et sur le devenir de certain polluant aromatiques dans les sols (anthracène et carbamazépine). L'arrosage avec des eaux usées traitées par DEL-UV ne modifie pas la composition chimique de la matière organique de sol, l'activité catabolique globale des microorganismes, et le nombre et la diversité de bactéries indicatrices de pollution fécale par rapport au sol arrosé avec de l'eau d'irrigation. Certaines activités enzymatiques liées à la dégradation de la matière organique augmentent dans les sols arrosés avec des eaux usées traitées par DEL-UV, montrant que la matière organique apportée par l'effluent est activement dégradée par les microorganismes. / The development of new technologies for wastewater reuse is a priority for arid and semi-arid areas such as Mediterranean countries. The objective of this work was, firstly, to develop a system for tertiary treatment of wastewaters testing LEDs emitting UV-A and / or UV-C (UV LEDs) on fecal indicator inactivation (Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis) and then on urban effluents, by studying the decrease in both microbial and chemical pollution. This first step has highlighted a higher efficiency of this system when UV UV-A and UV-C are coupled. Wasterwaters with quality meeting the statutory requirements for the reuse of wastewater for irrigation were obtained and used in the second part of this work was to study the impact of watering with UV-LED- treated wastewaters on soil parameters and on the fate of pollutants (anthracene and carbamazepine) in soils. Watering with UV-LED treated wastewater does not change the chemical composition of soil organic matter, the global catabolic activity of soil microorganisms, and the number and diversity of fecal indicators compared to control (irrigation water). Certain enzymatic activities related to the degradation of organic matter increased in soil watered with UV-LED treated wastewater, showing that the organic matter added by the effluent is actively degraded by microorganisms. In addition, aromatic pollutants are oxidized two to three times faster in soils watered with UV-LED treated wastewater.

2-Nitrobenzanthron (2-NBA) and 3-nitrobenzanthron (3-NBA) are pollutants widely occurring in the environment. The main sources of benzanthrones are combustion products (i.e. diesel exhausts, wood and cigarette smoke ...). 3-NBA is proven strong mutagen and carcinogen for bacteria and mammals and it is probably mutagenic also to humans, while 2- NBA shows genotoxic properties lower by 3-4 orders of magnitude. Here we consider the possibility that large difference in the solubility, and consequently also the difference in bioavailability of these isomers could be the factor partially explaining this phenomenon. One goal was to determine solubility of 2-NBA in water and compare it with 3-NBA and also with other carcinogens studied in our laboratory (Sudan I, ellipticin). Another objective was to evaluate the effect of model proteins (bovine serum albumin, lysozyme) on solubility of Sudan I and ellipticine. The last aim was to determine extinction coefficients of these compounds in water and in methanol. Two different methods were employed to determine the solubility of the model compounds. This work deals with dual detection of organic and inorganic analytes after separation by capillary zone electrophoresis. In the first part, two types of hydrodynamic sampling are tested. Standard hydrodynamic sampling most often used in laboratory-made electrophoretic apparatus, based on lifting the vessel with the sample, in which the sampling end of the capillary is immersed, and a new method based on increasing the pressure in the sampling vessel without moving the capillary. This sampling procedure minimizes experimenter activity because it is controlled by software. Experimenter only changes vessel containing the sample solution for one with separation electrolyte. The experimental parameters, the sampling time and pressure, are optimized to achieve maximum separation efficiency and adequate detection sensitivity. In the second part of the work, the developed method is tested for the separation of amino-acids in a biological sample (urine).
