[pt] O tema da presente pesquisa é O Padroado Régio no Brasil e as circunscrições eclesiásticas. Está inserida nas atividades de pesquisa do Programa de PósGraduação em Teologia da PUC-Rio, área de concentração Teologia Sistemático-Pastoral, linha de pesquisa Religião e Modernidade, projeto de pesquisa História da Igreja e Modernidade: Permanências e Mudanças. O que se pretende – como objetivo principal – é investigar o que foi o Padroado Régio e qual a sua preponderância no Brasil no processo de criação das circunscrições eclesiásticas nos períodos colonial e imperial brasileiros. Nesse sentido, recorrendo primordialmente à documentação oficial coeva, investigar-se-á, por um lado, a origem do Padroado Régio ultramarino de Portugal e a sua incidência na organização circunscritiva da Igreja Católica no Brasil. Depois, uma vez proclamada a independência brasileira, como o Império do Brasil incorporou esse Padroado transformando-o no chamado Padroado Imperial e como o exercitou no que tange à ampliação do número das circunscrições eclesiásticas brasileiras para a promoção de uma maior eficácia pastoral. Faz parte ainda do escopo da pesquisa a identificação de elementos que desmitifiquem a tendência diacrônica relativa à compreensão do Padroado Régio vigente em parte da historiografia moderna, estabelecendo a partir da investigação dos documentos oficiais da época uma distinção entre a essência e a natureza do referido Padroado e as contradições relativas à sua dinâmica e ao seu exercício manifestadas ao longo da história. / [en] The subject of this research is The Royal Patronage in Brazil and the ecclesiastical circumscriptions. It is part of the research activities of the Postgraduate Program in Theology at PUC-Rio, area of concentration Systematic-Pastoral Theology, research line Religion and Modernity, research project Church History and Modernity: Permanences and Changes. What is intended - as a main objective - is to investigate what was the Royal Patronage and what was its preponderance in Brazil in the process of creating ecclesiastical circumscriptions in the Brazilian colonial and imperial periods. In this sense, using primarily coeval official documentation, the investigation will focus, on the one hand, the origin of the overseas Royal Patronage of Portugal (Padroado Régio ultramarino de Portugal) and its impact on the circumscribed organization of the Catholic Church in Brazil. Then, once Brazilian independence was proclaimed, how the Empire of Brazil incorporated this Patronage transforming it into the so-called Imperial Patronage and how it was exercised regarding the expansion of the number of Brazilian ecclesiastical circumscriptions to promote greater pastoral effectiveness. It is also part of the scope of the research to identify elements that demystify the diachronic tendency regarding the understanding of the current Royal Patronage in part of modern historiography, establishing from the investigation of the official documents of the time a distinction between the essence and the nature of the referred Patronage and the contradictions related to its dynamics and its exercise manifested throughout history.

[pt] O presente estudo discorre sobre as relações entre Igreja e Estado durante o Regime monárquico oitocentista que vigorou no Brasil, tendo como corte espacial e temporal a Cidade do Rio de Janeiro entre 1869 e 1890. O estudo está inserido nas atividades de pesquisa do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Teologia da PUC Rio, área de concentração Teologia Sistemático-Pastoral, linha de pesquisa Religião e Modernidade, projeto de pesquisa História da Igreja e Modernidade: Permanências e Mudanças. Tem como objetivo principal elucidar questões práticas acerca do Padroado Imperial brasileiro através da abordagem das relações entre poder eclesiástico e poderes civis para provimento e provisionamento da Igreja no então Município da Corte. Sendo assim, debruça-se sobre fontes variadas, desde as oficiais de origem eclesiástica e civil até as da imprensa coeva, a fim de mapear as diferentes ópticas a partir das quais a confessionalidade do Estado e as suas relações com a Igreja em âmbito local – a Cidade do Rio de Janeiro – podem ser percebidas, proporcionando um visão multifacetada dessas relações e contribuindo para aprofundar o debate acadêmico sobre a temática. / [en] This study discusses the relations between Church and State during the nineteenth-century monarchical regime that prevailed in Brazil, taking as its spatial and temporal focus the city of Rio de Janeiro between 1869 and 1890. The study is part of the research activities of the Postgraduate Program in Theology at PUC-Rio University, with a concentration area in Systematic-Pastoral Theology, research line in Religion and Modernity, and a research project in History of the Church and Modernity: Permanencies and Changes. Its main objective is to elucidate practical questions about the Brazilian Imperial Patronage through an approach to the relations between ecclesiastical power and civil powers for the provisioning of the Church in the then Municipality of the Court. Therefore, it focuses on various sources, from official sources of ecclesiastical and civil origin to those of the contemporary press, in order to analyze the different perspectives from which the confessionality of the State and its relations with the Church at a local level – the City of Rio de Janeiro – can be perceived, providing a multifaceted view of these relations and contributing to deepening the academic debate on the subject.

[pt] Este trabalho procura resgatar a importante contribuição de Filipe Melanchthon para o movimento reformatório europeu do século XVI, trazendo uma biografia de sua vida e carreira, abordando aspectos centrais de sua teologia e a como eles também ajudaram a moldar o discurso reformatório a partir de Wittenberg para toda a Europa. De maneira especial, enfatiza-se a historiografia de Melanchthon desde a época da Reforma, procurando desfazer-se rótulos e juízos de valor infundados sobre a sua pessoa, especialmente no que se refere a ser considerado um auxiliar sem grandes contribuições originais ou, pior ainda, um traidor da causa luterana. Busca-se, ainda, apontar para os novos rumos atuais da pesquisa teológica sobre a sua pessoa na Europa e nos Estados Unidos, com o intuito de estimular a pesquisa sobre este assunto também no Brasil. Ao final, verifica-se que a Melanchthon foi destinada uma posição obscura na pesquisa histórica do movimento reformatório europeu, o que não condiz com a grandeza e a importância de suas contribuições para aquela época e também daquilo que pode servir de estímulo ao refletir teológico atual. / [en] This work’s purpose is to highlight the great contributions to the Reformatorial Movement in Europe during the XVI Century by Philip Melanchthon. So, it brings a biography of his life, as well as it underlines some of the basic aspects of his theology and how they helped to shape the message of the Reformation from Wittenberg to all Europe. Mostly, it focuses on the historiography of Melanchthon from Reformation’s time on, in order to clear up misunderstandings and biased labels that were imposed on him, above all that he gave no original contribution and – even worst – that he was a traitor inside the Lutheran ranks. It also tries to point out the new directions that Melanchthon Research is taking in Europe and in the United States, in order to foster the research on this topic also in Brazil. In the end, it becomes clear that a rather obscure place was assigned to Melanchthon in the historical research of the Reformation, what is not appropriate considering the extent of his contribution then and how much it can foster theological thinking today.

[pt] A análise da participação de atores transnacionais nas dinâmicas internacionais, assim como a análise da política externa dos Estados e do impacto de elementos religiosos sobre as relações internacionais constitui-se em um campo de pesquisa de grande importância no cenário atual da disciplina de Relações Internacionais. Nessa dissertação propomos um olhar inovador sobre a construção da bem fundamentada aliança não-escrita entre Brasil e Estados Unidos, investigando a possível participação de missionários presbiterianos norte americanos na construção da sólida amizade entre esses dois países. A pesquisa é baseada na análise de casos, com acesso a fontes primárias e secundárias, orientada por diferentes recursos teóricos de Relações Internacionais voltados para a análise de atores transnacionais, análise de política externa e análise de normas. / [en] The analyses of transnational actors role in international dynamics, as well as foreign policy analyses and the impact of religious elements over international relations is a very important field of studies in today s International Relations disciplines. In this dissertation we propose a new look over the construction of the well based unwritten alliance between Brazil and United States, investigating the possible participation of Presbyterian North-American missionaries in the building of the solid friendship between these two countries. The research is based on case specific analyses, with use of primary and secondary sources of study, oriented by different theoretical resources of International Relations directed to the analyses of transnational actors, foreign policy analyses e norms analyses.
