Současná česká próza v interpretacích pro střední školy / Contemporary Czech Prose and its Interpretation for Grammar Schools

This thesis reflects the contemporary Czech prose and its teaching at high schools. Theoretical chapters are focused on factors influencing the literature tuition at high schools: psychological and readers' profile of an adolescent student, high school particular environment from the teachers' perspective as well as state curriculum scope. In some respect the proposal of the own literary seminar aims with its concept to follow the ingrained scheme but there are some obvious aspects of innovation. The practical part tackles the didactic interpretation of the novel "Hastrman" by Miloš Urban and its usage when preparing two teaching units according to the proposed literary seminar concept. There is also a reflection of the proposed lesson preparations check up and finally are also mentioned the possible modifications in the concept as well as in those preparations. This thesis is focused on the decadent form of Czech symbolist literature at the turn of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The main task is to present a complex catalogue of motifs and images used by Czech decadents in their works and also to analyse the main methods and strategies they used - in particular interstatuality, also connected with the decadent effort to capture the uniqueness of each passing moment, and synaesthesia. The thesis also focuses on the radical individualism of decadent authors and its connection with both the motifs used and the symbolist style in itself - in the form of self-stylization of the decadent authors who tend to identify with their own works and become (even in real life) their own literal subjects. Because of the prominent visual aspect of decadent literature, the thesis also takes into consideration contemporary art works and the relations between words and images.

This thesis deals with the phenomenon of Carpathian Ruthenia, or Zakarpattia, which is one of the most discussed issues in Czech literature. It expands the traditional view of the issue with a chronological survey of works by Czech authors who were inspired by Carpathian Ruthenia, and maps their writings created from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 21st century. It focuses on their interpretation, with particular reference to the topology. The first chapter presents the terminological problems associated with the territory of the Transcarpathian region and briefly summarizes its history. The next chapter submits an account of the exceptional nature of this area (its contrasts, periphery, regionalism, myths, exoticism, idylls and adventures), and attempts to characterize its uniqueness (backwardness, belief in superstitions, Jews, alcoholism, poachers, enchanting countryside and outlaws). Carpathian Ruthenia appears to be a place of secrecy, where hypothetical characters grow. The topology of the mountain is also an important element. The thesis deals with possible applications of literary texts in teaching of czech as a foreign language. The first part summarizes the position of literature within the framework of respective methodical directions both in the past and today and also what status is attributed to literature in teaching of foreign languages by contemporary education legislation (especially the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). The work also includes an analysis of czech language textbooks for foreigners and of other publications based on the inclusion frequency of literary excerpts, on their type and potential didactic utilization. The theoretical part of the thesis contains chapters, which deal with the significance of literature in the teaching of foreign languages, in particular with literary texts and the definition of reader's competence, which are an important basis for the practical part of the work. The practical part contains four lesson proposals built upon working with specific literary texts (one prosaic and three poetic texts). The thesis deals with the era of the Czech literature in the second half of the 20th century. It focuses on the description of the humorous elements in selected literary works. The works are different in topics and genres too and in the end the works are reflected all together. The main literature sources are the analyzed titles and the book f essays called Silence and laughter by Sylvia Richterová. The first chapter presents an outline of the atmosphere of the 60s, the second chapter defines the topic and genre specifications of the works published in this decade. The third chapter is a methodological guide to comicality. The aim of this thesis is to present the literary activities of Zdenek Kalista in 1919- 1924, a period which saw him becoming one of the most prominent figures of the young post- war generation of writers. The research has been primarily based on materials that had been so far ignored or insufficiently reflected (literary remains of Zdenek Kalista, Antonin Matej Pisa, Cestmir Jerabek, Lev Blatny, Jiri Wolker etc., as well as articles from contemporary magazines and daily newspapers) together with Kalista's memoirs. The thesis is divided into five chronologically sorted parts, each reflecting one year of Kalista's life and work and relating them to the literary situation of that time, while continuously describing them from multiple perspectives. In the first part, Kalista's personal life and the activities of the youngest literary generation are analyzed. After that, the focus shifts to the contemporary art groups (Umelecky klub, Literarni skupina, partly Devetsil) and Kalista's relationship with his contemporaries and various key figures of the literary scene (Jiri Wolker, Antonin Matej Pisa, Frantisek Gotz, Stanislav Kostka Neumann etc.). Alena Fry Dissertation Abstract Edgar Allan Poe in Czech Reception: Translation and Interpretation History The doctoral thesis investigates the history of Edgar Allan Poe's reception in Czech culture from the 1850s to the present. Its aim is to scrutinize how the author's image has been shaped and reshaped over the course of time by various book editions, interpretive approaches and key translations, and what socio-cultural, literary or individual factors contributed to these transformations. The thesis is intended to contribute to the understanding of the history of Czech literary translation and of Czech literature's intercultural affinities. Chapter 1 defines the research goal, presents the theoretical background and outlines the structure of the thesis. It reveals the inseparableness of Poe's image as the author and the man, i.e. the Poe "myth" that started developing during Poe's lifetime, and the necessity to also account for it when studying his Czech reception. Chapter 2 focuses on the period up to the early 1890s and examines the earliest interpretations. These were strongly influenced by R. W.
