Indícios do desenvolvimento profissional de uma professora de música iniciante : um estudo sobre os gestos profissionais

Viapiana, Ezequiel Carvalho January 2017 (has links)
This MA dissertation aimed at to investigate signs of the professional development in the performance of a beginning music teacher through her professional gestures. More specifically, it aimed at to identify and to characterize the professional gestures in the performance of the beginning music teacher; and to understand how the gestures of work or métier (senses) are transformed into singular and contextual professional gestures (elements) in the performance of the beginning music teacher. The theoretical framework was constituted by the concept of function and teaching professionality, by Maria do Ceíu Roldaão, who claims teaching function is a founding element of professionality, and by the model of professional performance, by Anne Jorro, who presents the gestures of the work or métier, as socially constructed characterizers of the teaching profession, and professional gestures, as an extension of work or métier gestures to a particular and contextual perspective. An instrumental case study was carried out, with data being collected through observation and audiovisual recording of seven classes of Paloma, the music teacher that engaged in the research, and eight recall stimulation interviews. Data collected underwent procedures of transcription, codification, categorization and interpretation, so that the signs of professional development of Paloma could be explained. Results make explicit the transformative dimensions (actions) of Paloma's performance, moving from a meaning to a performance element, being the professional gestures expressed through the gestures of language, the gestures of staging the knowledge, the gestures of adjustment in action and the gestures of ethics. The process of transforming gestures of work or métier into professional gestures is based on the experience acquired by the teacher in the context of her work and is driven by three actions: flexibilization of previous assumptions, living in the work environment and reflection on her practice. The conclusion proposes the understanding of the professional development as the process of learning to teach with two perspectives related to the teaching performance in the classroom: the internal perspective, which was described through the findings of this research, and the external perspective, which concerns educational policies and teachers´ working conditions related to these policies.

The Use of Music as a Pedagogical Tool in Higher Education Sociology Courses: Faculty Member Perspectives and Potential Barriers

Loveless, Jerry C.L. 20 June 2013 (has links)
Previous research has identified student engagement as an important antecedent to student learning in higher education. Although student engagement is viewed as important for learning, a significant number of college students still report frequently feeling bored in their courses. The use of music as a pedagogical tool is believed to be beneficial for promoting student engagement and student learning in higher education sociology courses, yet it has been suggested that sociology faculty members do not commonly incorporate the technique into their courses. The purpose of this comparative interview study is to explore higher education sociology faculty members' understandings of the use of music as a pedagogical tool, and the perceived importance of student engagement to student learning among higher education sociology faculty members. In this study, it is found that higher education sociology faculty members believe student engagement can lead to increased student learning. It is also found that higher education sociology faculty members generally identify music as an effective pedagogical tool for promoting student engagement and learning in higher education sociology courses. Interestingly, participants believed the use of music as a pedagogical tool to be an uncommon practice in higher education sociology courses in the United States. As part of their efforts to explain their choices to use or not use music as a pedagogical tool, faculty participants described potential barriers that may impact faculty member choices to use music in their higher education sociology courses. Sociology faculty participants in this study agreed that a lack of discussion of pedagogical tools among colleagues and in teaching courses might serve as a potential barrier for the use of music as a pedagogical tool. Higher education sociology faculty participants also identified a lack of knowledge of how to use music as a pedagogical tool as a potential barrier for the use of music in sociology courses. This research suggests that the lack of faculty knowledge of music as a pedagogical tool may be due to the lack of discussion of pedagogical tools both among colleagues and in the teaching courses completed by higher education sociology faculty members. Past research has suggested that sociology faculty members need to create an environment that encourages students to be active and engaged participants in their own learning through building a community of learners. This study suggests that higher education sociology faculty members may successfully build a community of learners through using music as a pedagogical tool in their courses. This study recommends that changes at the departmental level need to occur in order to make it easier for sociology faculty members to gain the knowledge required to use music effectively in their courses. Suggestions for practice and future research are provided.

Effectiveness of Undergraduate Music Teacher Education Programs: Perceptions of Early-Career Music Educators

Kugelman, Louis S January 2021 (has links)
Most states in the country have adopted a broad P-12 licensure for music teacher certification (Henry, 2005). This broad licensure puts a strain on music teacher education programs. Faculty create degree programs which must include coursework from internal and external influencers, all while trying to create a curriculum for preservice teachers that incorporates a wide breadth of topics, balanced with enough depth for teachers to be prepared for success in the profession. Harsh criticisms have risen about music teacher education programs shortfalls in trying to strike a balance between breadth and depth (Forsythe, et. al., 2007; Legette, 2013; Leonhard,1985). Much of the content within a music teacher education program reflect guidance from and is approved by a single external influence–the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). The NASM is the national accrediting agency for schools of music who voluntarily choose to subscribe to this oversight. Their accreditation standards are the most recognized and supported in the country, and because of that accrediting function, NASM has great power and influence over music programs in higher education (Ester & Brinkman, 2005). However, research informing the requirements from the NASM and their effectiveness are scarce (Forsythe et. al., 2007). The purpose of this research is to explore early-career music educators' perceptions of the value, effectiveness, and relevance of their NASM accredited undergraduate music studies in preparation for teaching. A marketing research approach and subsequent analysis provides empirical evidence of novice music educator's perception of the efficacy of teacher preparation curricula as they correspond to each NASM guideline. Study participants (n=36) were early-career teachers (1-3 years professional experience) from the National Association for Music Educators Northeast Region who responded to a survey request. In the survey, participants used a 1-5 Likert-type scale to rate the importance of NASM competencies to their first years of teaching and the instructional performance of their music teacher education program. Lastly, participants rated the overall importance and performance of their music teacher education programs. Survey results indicate the overall average perceived importance of all music competencies from the NASM in music teacher education programs (MTEP) are rated higher than the overall perceived performance of instruction (3.61, 2.81). Analysis of the results also revealed a discouraging gap between the high importance of general, vocal, and instrumental music curriculum knowledge and the less than sufficient performance by music teacher education programs. A similar gap in laboratory and field teaching experiences in individual, small group, and whole group settings was identified. The results of this study indicate a need for more reflective research into music teacher education programs and the competencies required by the National Association of Schools of Music. / Music Education
