Feasibility of Using a Non-Counter Movement Squat to Assess Lower Body Strength in Adults Ages 20-70 years.

January 2019 (has links)
abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the Feasibility of Using a Non-Counter Movement Squat to Assess Lower Body Strength in Adults ages 20-70 years. Feasibility was tested by measuring five feasibility metrics described by Bowen et al. (Bowen et al., 2009): Acceptability, Demand, Implementation, Practicality, and Limited Efficacy. Seven male subjects and fifteen female subjects participated in the study. The subjects had their height, weight, body fat percentage by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), and grip strength measured. Subjects performed a warm-up on a cycle ergometer, a Non-Counter Movement Squat Test (NCMST) 1-repetition maximal strength test using a Smith machine, and a cool down on a treadmill. Each subject then completed a post-participation questionnaire used to measure acceptability, Demand was measured by subjects who agreed to participate, implementation was measured by subjects who completed the protocol, practicality was measured by an administrator survey, and limited efficacy was measured by distribution of strength results by age and for all subjects by sex. Results showed acceptance of hypotheses of acceptability, demand, implementation and practicality for both males and females. Limited efficacy was inconclusive for both males and females resulting in rejection of hypothesis. The findings of this study show that further research is needed to compare the NCMST to other lower body muscular strength tests to determine the validity of the NCMST. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Healthcare Innovation 2019

Prenatal and Postnatal Nutrition and Lactation Consulting: A Feasibility Study.

Beale, Marissa Blake 05 May 2007 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of a prenatal and postnatal nutrition and lactation consulting facility in either of two locations in the Tidewater region of Virginia, Virginia Beach or Williamsburg. Experts in nutrition and lactation, a registered dietitian and licensed lactation consultant, would be the ideal means of providing adequate nutritional and lactation advice for the mother and infant to foster healthy, optimal pregnancy outcomes and lactation success. A web-based search for adequate data on the demographic sketches of the two cities was done to develop an understanding of meeting the needs of the target population for this type of facility. Women of higher socioeconomic status, higher education level, and with emotional support from spouse/family were targeted. This study will act as the initial step in conducting further research in development of a business plan for a potential facility.

The role of a pre-study when implementing an ERP-system

Hultén, Christofer, Åkerwall, Magnus January 2015 (has links)
Is a feasibility study necessary before launching a new project that will change a company’s work processes and efficiency? This report describes the impact of making a feasibility study before project initiates, which can mean big changes in a company’s operations. The feasibility study is of great importance, not at least because it makes it possible to cancel a project at an early stage if you discover that it is not economically advantageous for the company to implement it. This report discusses the pros and cons of different project methods and ERP-systems. The report interviewed a number of very experienced and competent persons, who together have over 100 years of project experience and which have been involved in above 100 projects. Their views and experiences form the basis for conclusions and analyses in the report. In addition, the scientific literature studies supplemented the interviews to give a comprehensive picture of the issues of feasibility studies, ERP-systems and their roles in different contexts.

Importer Preferences and Opinions on Vacuum and Steam Treatment Technology for Hardwood Logs Export

Zambrano Balma, Francisco Xavier 30 August 2024 (has links)
The forest products industry significantly contributes to Virginia's economy, generating $23 billion annually, employing 109,000 individuals, and providing $345 million to timber landowners. Hardwood log exports are a crucial portion of this economic contribution, with major importers including China, Vietnam, and Canada. Most importing countries have specific requirements to prevent the movement of invasive organisms on the logs imported, of which chemical treatment is common. This study examines the feasibility and implications of transitioning from chemical-based treatments, such as methyl bromide, to a vacuum and steam treatment for hardwood log exports. Our investigation focuses on understanding the barriers to the adoption of this new technology, including industry awareness and perception, regulatory framework challenges, international acceptance, and economic viability. By addressing these areas, we aim to create a comprehensive manual for any company interested in adopting this technology. The manual will include a performance measurement system and a feasibility study to ensure successful implementation. Therefore, this thesis consists of two documents, the first provides background information, a problem statement and methods and results around the investigation of barriers to the adoption of this new treatment and a second document, the proposed manual to assist with implementation. To address the first objective, data were collected through interviews with technology developers, industry experts, and hardwood log importers in China and India. Quantitative data highlighted a 36.7% increase in US hardwood log exports to China in 2023, with species like alder and yellow poplar leading the market. Results indicate that China imports a significantly higher volume of hardwood logs monthly compared to India, highlighting a larger and more consistent demand. Commonly imported species include red and white oak, ash, and walnut. Both countries have strict fumigation requirements, primarily using methyl bromide, underscoring a global reliance on this method despite its environmental concerns. Awareness of alternative treatments such as vacuum and steam is limited, though there is interest in exploring cost-effective and efficient methods. However, adoption is hindered by regulatory approval and the need for proven effectiveness. To facilitate this transition, we created a comprehensive manual for companies to guide them through replacing methyl bromide and other chemical treatments with vacuum and steam technology. This study provides a comprehensive pathway for adopting vacuum and steam technology, addressing technical, regulatory, and economic considerations. The forest products sector can mitigate environmental impact by aligning industry practices with sustainable treatment methods while maintaining international trade relationships. / Master of Science / Virginia's forest industry is a major part of the state's economy, generating $23 billion each year and providing jobs to 109,000 people. Hardwood logs, particularly those exported to countries like China, Vietnam, and Canada, play a significant role in this economic impact. However, these countries require that imported logs be treated to prevent the spread of harmful pests. Traditionally, chemical treatments like methyl bromide have been used, but they pose environmental concerns. Our study explores the possibility of switching to a safer and more environmentally friendly method: vacuum and steam treatment. We looked into the challenges that might come with adopting this new technology, such as how aware the industry is of it, regulatory hurdles, whether international markets would accept it, and whether it's economically feasible. Our goal is to create a helpful guide for companies interested in making this switch, ensuring they have all the information needed to implement the new treatment successfully. To gather insights, we interviewed experts and key players in the industry, including log importers from China and India. We found that while there is interest in exploring new treatments, there are significant challenges, particularly related to getting regulatory approval and proving the effectiveness of the new method. Despite these challenges, our research outlines a clear path for adopting vacuum and steam treatment, which could help the forest products industry reduces its environmental impact while continuing to thrive in international trade.

Feasibility Study of a Plug-in Based Architecture for Mobile Blogging / Förstudie av en Plug-in Baserad Arkitektur för Mobil Bloggning

Zapata, César, Jakobsen, Christoffer January 2007 (has links)

There is no standard format for posting blog entries, which results in many different web feed formats and APIs being used. This thesis work addresses the problem by determining the feasibility of the development of a plug-in based architecture, used in a mobile blogging application compatible with multiple service providers.

During the study, a definition of what a feasible architecture would be was made based on requirements set by the stakeholders. Six models that complied with this definition were designed and compared. One of them was selected for prototyping. The prototyping phase was intended to test if the architecture could be implemented in a mobile environment. The study revealed that it is feasible to develop a plug-in based architecture to solve the problem, although with some limitations due to the dependency of libraries for streaming XML transformations not yet implemented in J2ME.
/

Economic analysis and Monte Carlo simulation of community wind generation in rural western Kansas

Halling, Todd January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering / Anil Pahwa / Energy costs are rising, supplies of fossil fuels are diminishing, and environmental concerns surrounding power generation in the United States are at an all-time high. The United States is continuing to push all states for energy reform and where better for Kansas to look than wind energy? Kansas is second among all states in wind generation potential; however, the best wind generation sites are located predominantly in sparsely populated areas, creating energy transportation problems. Due to these issues interest in community wind projects has been increasing. To determine the economic potential of community wind generation a distribution system in rural western Kansas where interest in community wind exists was examined and a feasibility study based on historical data, economic factors, and current grid constraints was performed. Since the majority of the load in this area is from pivot-point irrigation systems, load distributions were created based on temperature ranges instead of a linear progression of concurrent days. To test the economic viability three rate structures were examined: flat energy rate, demand rate, and critical peak pricing. A Monte Carlo simulation was designed and run to simulate twenty-year periods based on the available historical data; twenty-year net present worth calculations were performed to ensure economic viability. A sensitivity analysis was then performed to examine the effects of change in turbine size and energy rate scale. Finally, an energy storage analysis was performed to examine the economic viability of various sizes of battery storage systems.
