High Resolution Timing and Style of Coseismic Deformation: Paleoseismic Studies on the Northern and Southern San Andreas Fault

Critical inputs to evaluate fault behavior models include the frequency of large earthquakes on plate boundary faults, amount of displacement, style of deformation in these events, and how these earthquakes are associated with adjacent sites and broader segments. Paleoseismic data provide these inputs and allow the characterization of hazard posed by individual faults. This dissertation presents results from paleoseismic studies at Hazel Dell and Frazier Mountain that provide new earthquake chronologies and slip estimates for the San Andreas Fault (SAF). These data provide new insights into the recurrence and style of coseismic deformation for surface rupturing earthquakes on the SAF. The Hazel Dell site provides the first definitive paleoseismic evidence of two pre-1906, 19th century earthquakes on the Santa Cruz Mountains section of the SAF. I correlate these paleoseismic findings with the historic record of ground shaking associated with earthquakes in that period and combine the style of deformation in the last 3 events at the site with results from nearby paleoseismic sites to estimate earthquake rupture lengths and magnitudes for these early historic events. These findings increase the frequency of historic surface rupturing earthquakes on the northern SAF three-fold. At the Frazier Mountain site, on the southern SAF, I mapped deformation across a releasing step on the fault for the last five surface rupturing earthquakes to estimate deformation per-event. I compare the geometry and amount of vertical relief generated across the step-over by retrodeforming 3D surfaces interpolated from paleoseismic data step-wise for stratigraphic units deformed by each of those earthquakes. I find that structural relief is similar in four of the last five events, so slip on the fault must be within the same range for these earthquakes to generate approximately equivalent structural relief across the step-over. These results suggest displacement on the fault is comparable at the Frazier Mountain site for the last 4 events, including deformation resulting from 4-5 m lateral displacements in the historic M 7.9 1857 earthquake. This dissertation includes previously published and unpublished coauthored material. Supplemental file Plate A includes additional trench logs for the Hazel Dell site, presented in Chapters II and III.

The mysterious grinding grooves / De mystiska slipskårorna

On the Island of Gotland, there is a phenomenon called grinding grooves, Sw. slipskåror. They occur in bedrock and boulders. About 3600 are known on the island today and having a length of less than half a meter to over one meter. Their purpose was unknown to the scientific community as well as their age. The directions of some 1250 Gotlandic grinding grooves, measured by the author shows there is a correlation to astronomical orientations. An archaeological excavation carried out by the author at a stone with grinding grooves gave some crucial results. The grinding groove phenomenon occurs in some other places in the world as well. In South-West of Sweden, there are quite many in a few places. They are, however shorter and have another appearance because they are more curvature than the Gotlandic ones. Their purpose and age are unknown as well. In France, there are many places with grinding grooves, Fr. polissoirs. Their appearance is more similar to the Gotlandic ones than those in the Swedish mainland. They are supposed to be Neolithic.  In Africa and Australia, there are places with different kinds of carvings in stones. Some resemble those mentioned above, more or less. The difference between grinding grooves and other phenomena is floating.  They are sometimes associated with the circular indentations called cup marks. There are different explanations, and some are supposed to be marks from creating stone tools, while the cult is the explanation to others.

"Alteração de características do solo para remoção de hexaclorobenzeno de área contaminada". / Changes in soil properties to hexachlorobenzene removal from contaminated area

A contaminação ambiental provocada pelo despejo de resíduos industriais e pela aplicação de agrotóxicos pode resultar no desequilíbrio dos ecossistemas, além de causar danos diretos à saúde humana. No Brasil, existem várias áreas contaminadas com resíduos industriais, tais como o hexaclorobenzeno (HCB), um composto organoclorado usado no passado como fungicida, mas que atualmente tem seu uso proibido devido a sua alta persistência no ambiente e alta capacidade de bioacumulação. Este estudo verificou a possibilidade de remoção de resíduos de HCB do solo contaminado além da possibilidade de contaminação do ar e da água por este composto. Verificou-se: a) o efeito de adição de matéria orgânica, alteração de pH e alagamento da terra sobre a comunidade microbiana e a degradação do HCB; b) a volatilização do HCB e, c) a lixiviação deste composto. A contaminação inicial da terra foi determinada através de extração das amostras de terra contaminada e análise dos extratos por cromatografia gasosa (CG). Alterações das características da terra foram promovidas pela adição de matéria orgânica (bagaço de cana de açúcar ou vermicomposto), adição de Cal ou alagamento das amostras de terra contaminada, além de combinações destes tratamentos. Cada amostra de terra, colocada em frascos de vidro, recebeu uma solução de HCB radiomarcado (14C-HCB). A mineralização do 14C-HCB foi analisada através da captura do CO2 proveniente das amostras de terra por uma solução de hidróxido de potássio e quantificação do 14CO2 por Espectrometria de Cintilação Líquida (ECL). A volatilização do 14C-HCB foi analisada através da captura dos compostos voláteis por lâmina de poliuretano, extração desta lâmina e análise do extrato por ECL, para quantificação dos 14C-compostos voláteis, e por CG, para quantificação dos compostos voláteis (HCB e metabólitos). A formação de 14C-resíduos ligados e de metabólitos do HCB nas amostras de terra foi analisada através da extração destas amostras e posterior análise da terra extraída por ECL e do extrato por CG. Cada amostra de terra também foi analisada quanto à atividade microbiana, medida através da respiração dos microrganismos, e quanto a densidade microbiana, através da metodologia de contagem de unidades formadoras de colônias (UFC) de bactérias e fungos. A mobilidade e a lixiviação do HCB foram estudadas através de percolação de água em tubos de PVC contendo amostras de terra contaminada tratadas com bagaço de cana de açúcar e/ou cal e solução de 14C-HCB, dispostas sobre amostras de terra não contaminada; os tubos foram seccionados e a terra e a água lixiviada foram analisadas por ECL. O período dos estudos foi de 270 dias. A determinação da contaminação inicial da terra indicou a presença do HCB (3400 mg g-1 terra) e dos metabólitos 1,2,4,5 TCB (24 mg g-1 terra), 1,2,3,4 TCB (6 mg g-1 terra) e PCB (267 mg g-1 terra). A volatilização de 14C-compostos ocorreu em todas as amostras, principalmente nas amostras alagadas e com adição de matéria orgânica (29% a 40 %, após 270 dias). O alagamento favoreceu a volatilização provavelmente devido a baixa hidrossolubilidade do HCB e, a presença de matéria orgânica pode ter favorecido a formação de metabólitos mais voláteis através do estímulo à descloração redutiva, que ocorre sob condições de anaerobiose. Entretanto, a descloração redutiva não foi comprovada pois não houve formação nem aumento na concentração de metabólitos do HCB entre os compostos volatilizados. Houve uma diminuição na quantidade de 14C-compostos extraíveis no decorrer do tempo em todas as amostras, mas a concentração de HCB ou de seus metabólitos permaneceu constante independente do tratamento. A atividade e a densidade microbiana foram maiores nas amostras com bagaço de cana de açúcar mas não tiveram efeito sobre a volatilização ou a degradação do HCB. Não ocorreu mineralização ou mobilidade do 14C-HCB na terra contaminada e nem a formação de 14C-resíduos ligados. Portanto, a adição de matéria orgânica, a alteração de pH e o alagamento da terra não se mostraram eficientes para a remoção do HCB de terra contaminada. Além disso, a ocorrência de formação de 14C-compostos voláteis e a ausência de lixiviação do 14C-HCB indicaram que a presença de resíduos de HCB no solo pode levar à contaminação do ar mas não de água subterrânea. / The environmental contamination by industrial wastes and pesticides can cause harmful effects to ecosystem besides direct human health damages. In Brasil, there are several areas contaminated with industrial wastes like the hexachlorobenzene (HCB), a chlorinated organic compound used in the past as fungicide but that has no longer been produced due to its high persistence in the environment and bioaccumulation potential. This study verified the possibility of HCB residues removal from contaminated soil besides the air and water contamination risk. It was verified: a) the effect of organic matter addition, pH change and flooding of the contaminated soil on the microbial community and HCB degradation; b) HCB volatilization and, c) HCB leaching. The initial soil contamination was determined by extraction of contaminated soil samples and analysis of the extract by Gaseous Chromatography (GC). Soil properties changes were promoted by organic material addition (sugar cane bagasse or earthworm humus), lime addition and flooding of the soil samples besides a combination of these treatments. Each soil sample, placed in glass flasks, was treated with radiolabelled HCB solution (14C-HCB). The 14C-HCB mineralization was analyzed by the entrapment of CO2 originated from the soil samples by potassium hydroxide solution and quantification of the 14CO2 by Liquid Scintillation Spectrometry (LSS). The 14C-HCB volatilization was analyzed by the entrapment of the volatiles compounds by a polyurethane lamina, extraction of this lamina and analysis of the extract by LSS, for 14C-volatile compounds quantification, and by GC, for volatile compounds (HCB and metabolites) quantification. The 14C-bound residues and the HCB metabolites of the soil samples were analyzed by the extraction of these samples and further analysis of the extracted soil by LSS and analysis of the extract by GC. Each soil sample was analyzed with regard to its microbial activity by microbial respiration measure and microbial density by the plate count technique. The mobility and leaching of the HCB were studied by water percolation through PVC tubes containing contaminated soil treated with sugar cane bagasse and/or lime and 14C-HCB placed over no contaminated soil; the tubes were cut in sections and the soil and the leached water were analyzed by LSS. All these studies lasted 270 days. The initial soil contamination determination indicated the presence of the HCB (3400 mg g-1 soil) and the metabolites 1,2,4,5 TCB (24 mg g-1 soil), 1,2,3,4 TCB (6 mg g-1 soil) and PCB (267 mg g-1 soil). The volatilization of the 14C-compounds occurred in all the samples, mainly in the flooded samples with organic matter addition (29% to 40% after 270 days). The flooding enhanced the volatilization due the low HCB water-solubility and, the presence of organic material can have favoured the formation of metabolites more volatile than the HCB due to reductive dechlorination that occurs under anaerobic conditions. But the reductive dechlorination occurrence was not proved as there was no formation or increase in metabolite concentration. There was a decrease in 14C-extractable compounds quantity through the time in all the samples but the HCB and metabolites concentrations keep constant independently of the treatment. The microbial activity and density were higher in the samples with sugar cane bagasse but it did not affected the HCB volatilization or degradation. The 14C-HCB mineralization and the 14C-bound residues formation did not occur. The mobility of the 14C-HCB was not observed too. Therefore, the organic material addition, the pH change and the soil flooding were not efficient to HCB removal from the contaminated soil. And, the occurrence of the volatilization of 14C-compounds and the absence of 14C-HCB leaching indicated that the presence of HCB residues in the soil can result in contamination of air but not the ground water.

Para tanto utilizou-se como principal objeto de análise assembleias fitolíticas, aliados a dados isotópicos da matéria orgânica do solo e datações 14C, extraídos de testemunhos de Organossolo em altitudes que variaram de 850 a 1.280 metros. Para o reverso da Escarpa Devoniana, em Ponta Grossa, os resultados sugerem que desde 34.550 anos cal. AP até 11.000 anos cal. AP vigorou na região um clima mais frio e seco que o atual, dominado por vegetação campestre. Diferentemente, na Serra da Esperança, em Guarapuava, no período entre 13.660 e 10.000 anos AP, apesar do clima mais frio que o atual, havia umidade suficiente para que vegetação do tipo florestal predominasse. Para ambos os locais, no entanto, o intervalo entre 10-11.000 e 5-6.000 anos AP é marcado por um ambiente de maior aridez, ocupado por um mosaico floresta/campo com prevalência campestre. A partir de 6.000 anos AP inicia-se uma mudança significativa no sentido de um clima mais quente e úmido. Mas, enquanto na Escarpa Devoniana a vegetação assume configuração semelhante a atual, propícia a formação de um mosaico campo/floresta, na Serra da Esperança a vegetação tende a ser bem mais fechada, num mosaico floresta/campo. O testemunho de Palmas abrange apenas os últimos 4.920 anos cal. AP e sugere o estabelecimento de um ambiente característico de mosaico campo/floresta, gradativamente mais aberto. A partir dos últimos 1.500 anos AP, mudanças na configuração de gramíneas sugerem um ambiente mais úmido, sob condições climáticas mais próximas às atuais, uma típica paisagem de campo entremeada por agrupamentos florestais. Os dados apontam possíveis variações na intensidade de mudanças climáticas no Pleistoceno Tardio em função de diferenças no relevo planáltico e sua capacidade de interferência microclimática. / This paper presents a study on a detailed regional scale for understanding the Quaternary paleoenvironmental settings in the Paraná Highlands, Southern Brazil (Ponta Grossa, Guarapuava, and Palmas. The main object of analysis was phytolitc assemblies, combined with isotopic data of soil organic matter and carbon-14 dating, sampled from peat testimonies at altitudes that ranged from 850 to 1,280 m. For the reverse of the Escarpa Devoniana, in Ponta Grossa, the results suggest that since 34,550 yrs. cal BP up to 11,000 yrs. cal BP the region had a colder and dryer climate than the current one, dominated by grassland. In contrast, in Serra da Esperança, in Guarapuava, in the period between 13,660 yrs. cal BP up to 10,000 yrs. cal BP despite the colder climate than the current, there was enough moisture for a kind of forest predominance. For both locations, however, the interval between 10-and 56,000 yrs. 11,000 BP is marked by greater aridity, occupied by a mosaic forest/field with prevalence of grasses. From 6,000 yrs. BP, it begins a significant shift towards a warmer moister climate. Nevertheless, while in the Escarpa Devoniana vegetation takes similar configuration to the current one, favorable to a mosaic field/forest, in Serra da Esperança the vegetation tends to be much more closed, as a mosaic forest/field. The Palmas testimony only comprises the last years 4,920 yrs. cal BP and suggests the establishment of an environment of mosaic field/forest, gradually more open. From the past 1,500 yrs., changes in grassland configuration suggest a moister environment under climatic conditions closer to the present, a typical grassland landscape with forest patches. The data indicate possible variations in the intensity of climate change in the Late Pleistocene due to differences in the Highlands’ relief and its capacity of microclimatic interference.

Προσδιορισμός βέλτιστων φυσικοχημικών συνθηκών (Τ, pH) κατά την ζύμωση συνθετικού μέσου λακτόζης με Kluyveromyces Marxianus

H αλόγιστη απόρριψη των αγροτοβιομηχανικών αποβλήτων στο περιβάλλον προκαλεί σοβαρά προβλήματα παγκοσμίως. Πολλά από αυτά όπως π.χ. τυρόγαλα περιέχουν θρεπτικά συστατικά τα οποία μπορούν να χρησιμοποιηθούν από μικροοργανισμούς προς παραγωγή προϊόντων υψηλής προστιθέμενης αξίας. Στην παρούσα εργασία χρησιμοποιήθηκε ο ζυμομύκητας Kluyveromyces marxianus για την ζύμωση συνθετικού μέσου με λακτόζη συγκέντρωσης ανάλογης με εκείνη του τυρογάλακτος (~5% w/v) προς παραγωγή αιθανόλης. Προσδιορίσθηκαν οι βέλτιστες φυσικοχημικές συνθήκες και τα αποτελέσματα έδειξαν ότι σε pH 7 και 30οC επιτυγχάνεται μέγιστη ταχύτητα ζύμωσης και συγκέντρωση αιθανόλης. Στις ίδιες συνθήκες, μέτρηση του ρυθμού πρόσληψης λακτόζης επισημασμένης με 14C από τον μικροοργανισμό έδειξε ότι αυτός σχετίζεται άμεσα με την κινητική της ζύμωσης. / Τhe indiscriminate disposal of agro waste in the environment causes serious problems worldwide. However, many of them for example whey, contain nutrients which can be used by microorganisms in order to produce products with high value. In this study is being used the yeast Kluyveromyces Marxianus for the fermentation of synthetic substrate of lactose with lactose concentration similar to that of the whey (~5% w/v) for ethanol production. Having determined the optimal physicochemical conditions and the results showed that at pH 7 and 30οC achieved a maximum speed of fermentation and ethanol concentration. Under the same conditions, measuring the rate of uptake of 14C-labeled lactose by the microorganism showed that this is directly related to the kinetics of fermentation

The 14C-HCB volatilization was analyzed by the entrapment of the volatiles compounds by a polyurethane lamina, extraction of this lamina and analysis of the extract by LSS, for 14C-volatile compounds quantification, and by GC, for volatile compounds (HCB and metabolites) quantification. The 14C-bound residues and the HCB metabolites of the soil samples were analyzed by the extraction of these samples and further analysis of the extracted soil by LSS and analysis of the extract by GC. Each soil sample was analyzed with regard to its microbial activity by microbial respiration measure and microbial density by the plate count technique. The mobility and leaching of the HCB were studied by water percolation through PVC tubes containing contaminated soil treated with sugar cane bagasse and/or lime and 14C-HCB placed over no contaminated soil; the tubes were cut in sections and the soil and the leached water were analyzed by LSS. All these studies lasted 270 days. The initial soil contamination determination indicated the presence of the HCB (3400 mg g-1 soil) and the metabolites 1,2,4,5 TCB (24 mg g-1 soil), 1,2,3,4 TCB (6 mg g-1 soil) and PCB (267 mg g-1 soil). The volatilization of the 14C-compounds occurred in all the samples, mainly in the flooded samples with organic matter addition (29% to 40% after 270 days). The flooding enhanced the volatilization due the low HCB water-solubility and, the presence of organic material can have favoured the formation of metabolites more volatile than the HCB due to reductive dechlorination that occurs under anaerobic conditions. But the reductive dechlorination occurrence was not proved as there was no formation or increase in metabolite concentration. There was a decrease in 14C-extractable compounds quantity through the time in all the samples but the HCB and metabolites concentrations keep constant independently of the treatment. The microbial activity and density were higher in the samples with sugar cane bagasse but it did not affected the HCB volatilization or degradation. The 14C-HCB mineralization and the 14C-bound residues formation did not occur. The mobility of the 14C-HCB was not observed too. Therefore, the organic material addition, the pH change and the soil flooding were not efficient to HCB removal from the contaminated soil. And, the occurrence of the volatilization of 14C-compounds and the absence of 14C-HCB leaching indicated that the presence of HCB residues in the soil can result in contamination of air but not the ground water.
