The thesis explores the phenomena of historic school gardens connected to elementary schools on Gotland, Sweden. Gotland had the highest percentage of school gardens connected to the elementary schools in Sweden, and by investigating this area much can be learned about the Swedish conditions. The study focus on the period in time when the school gardens were most frequent and used the most, to the point in time when they start losing ground. To bridge over the past to the present the thesis also investigates what is left and play with the thought of possible ways to treat the remains.  The main question for the thesis is: How could a school garden on Gotland be constructed and be used 1907 – 1947? And a follow up question is: What could still be there today and how can/should the remains be treated and conserved?  The thesis begin with an overview look at the school gardens of Sweden, closes in with on Gotland and completes with a deeper investigation of two examples of school gardens; Bunge and Stenkumla elementary schools. They serve as examples of what have been and by investigating them the shape and content of the school garden are learnt and the questions will seek to be answered. Bunge school has been a museum since the 1950s. Stenkumla school was used as a school to 2005 and is now privately owned. Ex students have been interviewed and shared their experiences from the environment and the daily work.  The thesis states that it was a common phenomenon on Gotland but the attending pupils often came from families of farmers and were used to work at home from an early age. In the early history of School gardens the pupils often worked in the teachers’ garden, causing protest. The teacher played an important role in founding the school garden. The two studies show school gardens, separated from the teachers gardens, that were established 1907 and 1916/17 that were in use until 1945 and 1946/47. Stenkumla school garden was always small and no obvious remains are left. Bunge was a bigger construction with more fruit trees and a clearer plan. The area of the school garden is still open, with remaining fruit trees and surrounding trees.

Gotland is an island with a rich history. One unique thing about it is the picturestones. There are, today, 565 known stones and fragments found on the island of various dating. The dating time spans from 400 ad to 1100 ad. This essay is meant to discuss the dating issue of the early picture stones dated to 400-700 ad and discuss the relevance and validity of the today’s dating. I want this essay to put some light on the picturestone dating and perhaps get some new strings in the light.

<p>Avsikten med denna uppsats var att undersöka och ta reda på vad hållbar turismutveckling innebär för Gotland och hur turism mer specifikt påverkar Gotlands arbete med att ernå en långsiktig och hållbar utveckling. Mina frågeställningar blev därför:</p><p>1. Finns det en gemensam definition för hållbar turismutveckling på Gotland, och hur ser den då ut?</p><p>2. Hur ser arbetet med att skapa en hållbar turismutveckling på destination ut mer specifikt?</p><p>3. Är/utgör turismen och Stockholmsveckan ett potentiellt hot mot hållbar utveckling för destinationen i allmänhet?</p><p>4. Om så, är detta något som destinationens aktörer och intressenter har tagit i beaktning och vilka åtgärder finns/görs för att motverka detta?</p><p>För att besvara dessa frågor har jag genomfört en kvalitativ fallstudie innehållande intervjuer och granskning av diverse litteratur inom ämnet. Informationen har sedan analyserats utifrån mina valda teoretiska utgångspunkter vilka bland annat behandlar hållbar turismutveckling med utgångspunkt ur ekonomisk, ekologisk och sociokulturell hållbarhet, såväl allmänt som specifikt för Gotland. Jag har bland annat kommit fram till att Gotland idag har en relativt god syn på vad det innebär att arbeta mot en hållbar turismutveckling, vilken även kan ses i deras utvecklingsprogram, arbeten och satsningar inom regionen. Dock är det viktigt att poängtera att Gotlands arbete mot en hållbar turismutveckling befinner sig i ett tidigt stadium varför vissa brister förekommer. Exempelvis ter sig somliga handlingar i praktiken inte lika självklara, eller på ett sådant sätt, som teorin förespråkar.</p>
