以宋代作為本文研究時段，乃因宋代在博弈史上佔有「承先啟後」的關鍵地位，前代風行的遊戲在宋代時定型，得到更進一步的發展；宋代新出的博弈遊戲更成為後世盛行遊戲的重要成分，可說是影響深遠。
本文將以東西方學者對遊戲的定義，歸納博弈的本質與特點，並整理史籍中可考之宋代博弈遊戲，探討這些遊戲與宋人、社會所產生的相互關係，進而釐清博弈究竟是可以增進聖人之道的「大裨聖教」，還是無足輕重的「牧豬奴戲」。
