This study investigated depth of hypnosis self-reported by subjects on the Field Inventory of Hypnotic Depth (FIHD) after experiencing one of two formal hypnotic inductions. The 68 subjects (41 females and 27 males) ranged in age from 17 to 47 (mean 25.3) and were placed into a high susceptibility group or a low susceptibility group based on their scores on the Harvard Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility (HGSHS:A). Both the low susceptibility group and the high susceptibility group were further divided randomly so that half of each group received an indirect induction treatment and the other half received a direct induction treatment.

Variation of the Symbiodinium Community Composition in Scleractinian Corals along a Cross-shelf and Depth GradientMejia Restrepo, Alejandro 12 1900 (has links)
Corals form a symbiotic relationship with photosynthetic zooxanthellae from the genus Symbiodinium; the breakdown of this symbiosis results in the phenomenon known as coral bleaching. This relationship is especially vulnerable to high temperature stress, although corals may survive if they have resistant types of symbionts, or switch their community composition towards them. To assess the variation of the symbiont community in different environmental conditions, I recorded the temperature and collected samples from six scleractinian coral species and one calcifying hydrozoan, in two inshore, two mid-shelf, and two offshore reefs at 1, 15, and 30m depth, analyzing Symbiodinium diversity using Next Generation Sequencing with the SymPortal profile typing approach. The temperature was very similar for all points in winter, when coral samples were collected, but variation between points increased until a maximum at summer, with the shallower parts of the inshore reefs showing higher temperatures and the points at 30m depth showing the lowest. The Symbiodinium composition was more similar between samples of the same host species than among samples of the same reefs or depths. Coral species from the Pocilloporidae family and Millepora dichotoma showed specific association with different profile types, specifically, intragenomic variants of Symbiodinium type A1, which appears to be dominant in the Red Sea although it has not been reported for these species in other regions. The other species showed specific associations with types previously reported in other regions, mostly from clade C and D, although also having different types and intragenomic variants. For most cases, certain profile types, which can reflect different species or populations, appeared to be dominant in particular environmental conditions, following a distribution related with depth, reef type, or both. In conclusion, this study showed that the Symbiodinium composition depends more on the host species than on the environmental conditions, and within each species the adaptation to environmental gradients can rely on tolerant symbiont species or populations characteristic of the Red Sea, or association with different types and clades that are common also in other regions.

This thesis deals with optical distance measurement and 3D scene measurement using focusing techniques with focus on confocal microscopy, depth from focus and depth from defocus. Theoretical part of the thesis is about different approaches to depth map generation and also about micro image defocusing technique for measuring refractive index of transparent materials. Then the camera calibration for focused techniques is described. In the next part of the thesis is described experimentally verification of depth from focus and depth from defocus techniques. For the first technique are shown results of depth map generation and for the second technique is shown comparison between measured distance values and real distance values. Finally, the discussed techniques are compared and evaluated.

Depth Enhancement and Surface Reconstruction with RGB/D SequenceZuo, Xinxin 01 January 2019 (has links)
Surface reconstruction and 3D modeling is a challenging task, which has been explored for decades by the computer vision, computer graphics, and machine learning communities. It is fundamental to many applications such as robot navigation, animation and scene understanding, industrial control and medical diagnosis. In this dissertation, I take advantage of the consumer depth sensors for surface reconstruction. Considering its limited performance on capturing detailed surface geometry, a depth enhancement approach is proposed in the first place to recovery small and rich geometric details with captured depth and color sequence. In addition to enhancing its spatial resolution, I present a hybrid camera to improve the temporal resolution of consumer depth sensor and propose an optimization framework to capture high speed motion and generate high speed depth streams. Given the partial scans from the depth sensor, we also develop a novel fusion approach to build up complete and watertight human models with a template guided registration method. Finally, the problem of surface reconstruction for non-Lambertian objects, on which the current depth sensor fails, is addressed by exploiting multi-view images captured with a hand-held color camera and we propose a visual hull based approach to recovery the 3D model.

Finding the Time: Age-Depth Models in Rockshelters and Their Paleoenvironmental ImplicationsFerbrache, Caleb E. 01 December 2019 (has links)
Rockshelters are capable of preserving excellent environmental records within their sediments. But the matter of interpreting an environmental record from rockshelter sediments presents a significant hurdle in the form of dating. An “age-depth model” is typically used to estimate the age of environmental information extending through the deposit. An age-depth model calculates the changes in time between direct ages (like a radiocarbon age) and can provide an estimated age for any depth. While radiocarbon dating can provide an age for organic remains, optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) can provide a direct age on quartz sand deposition and is particularly effective when applied to deposits formed by the wind. This study compares radiocarbon and OSL age-depth models from Last Canyon Cave (LCC) in the Pryor Mountains of south-central Montana. While radiocarbon ages are quite frequently used to construct age-depth models, it is possible they fail to provide accurate ages for the environmental material they aim to date.
I re-evaluated the stratigraphy at LCC and then collected OSL samples as well as samples for grain-size analysis from three different sedimentary exposures. Radiocarbon ages had already been produced for one of the exposures (Kornfeld et al. 2012). The OSL samples were most reliable when analyzed on a single-grain level. After creating age-depth models and collecting the grain-size data, I applied ages to all of the grain-size samples according to each of the three age-depth models. Ultimately, the single-grain OSL proved to be fundamentally different than the radiocarbon age-depth model, thereby challenging the current paleoenvironmental reconstruction of the site (Minckley et al. 2015).
I conclude that the radiocarbon and single-grain OSL age-depth models were not sufficiently similar, and therefore both dating methods should always be used together when investigating deposits in rockshelters in order to understand how they relate to one another and to the site formation. The use of granulometry also proved to be an important part of reconstruction site formation history. Ultimately, both single-grain OSL and granulometry were determined to be essential parts of studying environmental records in sedimentary deposits in rockshelters.

Le codage de source distribué est un paradigme qui consiste à encoder indépendamment deux sources corrélées et à les décoder conjointement. Wyner et Ziv ont montré que le codage de source distribué peut atteindre les mêmes performances débit-distorsion que le codage de source conjoint, pourvu que certaines contraintes soient satisfaites. Cette caractéristique rend le codage de source distribué très attractif pour des applications qui demandent un encodeur à faible complexité ou pour ne pas être obligé à avoir des communications entre les sources. Dans le cadre du codage vidéo distribué, les trames corrélées sont encodées séparément et décodées conjointement. Dans l'architecture ainsi dite de Stanford, le flux vidéo est séparée en trames clés et Wyner-Ziv. Les trames clés sont encodées INTRA. Les trames Wyner-Ziv sont données en entrée à un codeur de canal systématique ; seulement les bits de parité sont envoyés. Au décodeur, on produit une estimation de la trame Wyner-Ziv, appelée information adjacente, en interpolant les trames clés reçues. L'information adjacente, considérée comme une version bruitée de la trame Wyner-Ziv, est corrigée par les bits de parité. Dans cette thèse, nous proposons plusieurs algorithmes pour la génération de l'information adjacente et pour l'interpolation temporelle et inter-vue. On propose aussi un algorithme de fusion bayésienne des deux interpolations. Tous les algorithmes proposés donnent des résultats meilleurs par rapport à l'état de l'art en termes de performance débit-distorsion. Nous proposons aussi plusieurs algorithmes pour l'estimation de la trame Wyner-Ziv dans le cadre de la vidéo multi-vues plus profondeur. / Distributed source coding is a paradigm that consists in encoding two correlated sources independently, provided that they are decoded jointly.Wyner and Ziv proved that distributed source coding can attain the same rate distortion performance of joint coding, under some constraints.This feature makes distributed source coding very attractive for applications that require a low-complexity encoder or for avoiding communication between the sources. In distributed video coding, correlated frames are encoded separately but decoded jointly. In the Stanford Architecture, the video is split into Key Frames and Wyner-Ziv Frames. The Key Frames are INTRA coded. The Wyner-Ziv Frames are fed into a systematic channel coder and only the parity bits are sent to the decoder. At the decoder side, an estimation of the Wyner-Ziv Frame, called side information, is produced by interpolating the available frames. The side information, that can be considered as a noisy version of the real Wyner-Ziv Frame, is corrected by the parity bits sent by the encoder. In this thesis, we propose several algorithms for side information generation both for the temporal and inter-view interpolation. We also propose a Bayesian fusion of the two estimations. All our algorithms outperform the state-of-the-art in terms of rate distortion performance. We also propose several algorithms for Wyner-Ziv estimation in the context of multiview video plus depth.

The presence of moisture in the soil reduces its shear strength. After the rain or snowmelt, the high percentage of moisture in the subgrade of highway, causes the instability resulting into failure of the highway due to high water table. Therefore, it is essential to install a drainage system to remove the excess moisture from the subgrade of highways to avoid its failure.
In the present study, six different soil samples have been studied to observe its failure by triaxial shear strength and corresponding moisture content was noted. The tension applied to remove moisture was converted to equivalent drain depth. The relationships were studied between shear strength versus drain depth and moisture content versus drain depth. From these relationships the design drain depth for different types of soils studied was recommended. The present study also suggest that the design drain depth for the highways can be approximated directly using water retention curve.
