Experimental measurement of laminar flame speed of a novel liquid biofuel 1,3 dimethoxyoctane

Laminar flame speed of a novel liquid bio-fuel has been determined experimentally using a closed spherical combustion vessel of 29 L equipped with two pairs of fused silica windows for optical access at atmospheric pressure and elevated temperature conditions. Schlieren technique was used to visualize and record the temporal evolution of the outwardly spherical flame front, and an in-house developed Matlab code was employed to process the flame front images and calculate its area by applying several image processing techniques. The test conditions consisted of varying the fuel-air mixture equivalence ratio at atmospheric standard pressure and different initial temperatures. Validation of the present method was achieved by measuring and comparing the flame speed of methane/air and n-heptane/air mixture with their published counterparts. Experimental results revealed comparable laminar flame speed of the novel liquid biofuel (1, 3- dimethoxyoctane) to heavy liquid hydrocarbons such as n-heptane and isooctane, especially at stoichiometric and fuel rich conditions. Additionally, the flammability limits of this novel fuel showed similarities with those of gaseous hydrocarbons fuels (e.g. methane, ethane) but higher than those of liquid hydrocarbons (e.g. diesel, gasoline). / February 2016

Development of an Application for Managing Speed Skating Events

This thesis provides insight in the further development of an application for managing speed skating events, based on the previous developed application by a group of students in fall 2010. The application was implemented for the Karlstad Speed Skating Club, which before used a program from the 90's. After finishing the implementation, all basic functionality requested by the Karlstad Speed Skating Club can be used for managing speed skating events. The first part of the thesis presents a short summary of our work, comparing what we wanted to implement and what we achieved. A short background on speed skating, the old system, developed by a group of students, and the project requirements are presented. An introduction to the used tools, languages, techniques and development processes is given along with details concerning the implementation of the requirements. Finally, the design of the new user interface is explained and the results are presented, containing an evaluation of the implementation, occured problems and what could be added in the future.

On high speed machining of titanium alloys : analysis and validation

M.Ing. / This report documents the steps taken to gain insight into the phenomena of high speed machining (HSM) of titanium alloys. This was done by firstly studying titanium alloys and the problems associated with machining titanium alloys. An experimental set-up and procedure was developed for measuring and recording both the machining temperature and component forces. A sufficient set of experimental data was collected through extensive experimentation. The cutting temperatures and component forces in HSM of Ti-6Al-4V were examined simultaneously. The cutting speed was found to be the most influential and limiting parameter on the machining temperature and component forces. A new approach for modeling the temperatures in HSM of titanium alloys was developed. Analytical predictions of the cutting temperatures were performed and used to evaluate the influence of a variation in the process parameters on the cutting temperature. The research provides insight for future work into the phenomena of HSM of titanium alloys . The results of the analytical model were found to be representative and comparable to the experimental data. It is however expected that the deviation between the predicted and measured result may be significantly reduced by changing the experimental approach. It is recommended that a complete set of experiments be done, using a new tool insert for every cut, thus removing the effect of possible tool wear on the experimental data obtained. In addition it is recommended that the iterative solution be improved through more in depth programming, considering the change in both the thermal and mechanical materials properties with a change in temperature. Ultimately the assumptions made in order to simplify the problem addressed in this report needs to be improved upon, in order to analyze data trends and even magnitudes to a greater degree of certainty.
