Welsh print culture in y Wladfa : the role of ethnic newspapers in Welsh Patagonia, 1868-1933

Brooks, Walter Ariel January 2012 (has links)
This thesis explores the role played by Welsh-language newspapers in y Wladfa (the Welsh settlement in Argentine Patagonia) from its inception in 1865 until 1933. The newspapers are analysed to assess in which manner they contributed to creating and maintaining a particular kind of Welsh identity whose preservation was the founding principle of the Patagonian settlement, and how that particular sense of Welshness evolved through time. The various publications produced by the Welsh in Patagonia will also be used to identify whether there were any challenges from within the Welsh community to the values, culture and identity that the newspapers promoted. Of special interest is analysing the interaction of the Welsh settlers with the Argentine Central Government and its representatives in the Chubut Territory. The reactions of Welsh-Patagonian newspapers to the complexities of the socio-political and cultural changes that Argentina underwent towards the end of the nineteenth century until the 1930s will be identified in order to understand how the Welsh experience in Patagonia fits in with the designs of the Government to effectively incorporate the Patagonian region into the fold of the Republic, and how the nationalistic policies of the Argentine Government impacted on the Welsh community and its press. This thesis also looks at how the Welsh-Patagonian newspapers interacted with an international network of Welsh-language publications from a distant corner of Patagonia. This research thesis intends to be a contribution to the studies of the ethnic press, studies of the experiences of the Welsh overseas, and studies in the field of immigration and ethnic communities in Argentina –more specifically in the context of the Patagonian region.

Students’ Exposure to Political News on the Internet and Political Awareness: A Comparison between Germany and Egypt

Ahmed, Mohamed 12 March 2012 (has links) (PDF)
The recent political events in Egypt, Libya, Yemen, and Tunisia (2011) have confirmed the key role of social networks (SNSs), as well as online political news in supporting citizens with their self-determination. Furthermore, “changes in the media landscape present new challenges for scholars interested in the relationship between the media and civil society. Additionally, the explosion of the Internet that started in advanced democracies and has spread through much of the globe provides new and unexplored pathways for communication. Moreover, the inclusion of the Internet in the media environment raises new questions for citizens, politicians, researchers, journalists, and government” (Oates, Owen & Gibson, 2006, p. 1). This study looks at the relationships between young people’s exposure to political news on the Internet and their political awareness. It develops and applies an index for political participation composed of several variables measuring political interest, discussion, knowledge, and participation. The survey among students in both countries was administered in Arabic and German, while the master questionnaire was developed in English. The survey was conducted between April and June 2010 in Egypt at Minia University and in Germany at Technical university of Dresden. The sample size was 1000 (500 in each country) students from several departments representing different academic fields: three departments of Engineering, three departments of Humanities and Social Science, and finally three departments of Natural Science. The study’s main research question was: “What is the impact of students’ exposure to political news on the Internet on their political awareness and civic activities?” The researcher started from the hypothesis that heavy use of political news on the Internet is positively related to political awareness. A further research question aimed at gauging the role of intervening variables such as gender and field of study for the relationship between the use of political news on the Internet and the level of political awareness. Results show that there is a positive relationship between using political online news and political awareness. German students’ political awareness for German students was higher than Egypt student’s political awareness (M=63.02, SD=15.65, comparing to M=45.72, SD= 17.65 for Egyptians).

A Comparative Study on Three Countries. United States, France and South Korea

Song, Yung Joo 21 March 2012 (has links)
This study compares the morphology and content formats of the traditional newspapers and their web sites in three different countries (United States, France and South Korea). It explores how the online environment changes content format from the traditional newspaper format. By focusing on the diversity of market environments within a common framework, this research proposes different types of analysis to illustrate today’s newspaper in a continually changing environment. Chapter 2 focuses on the observation of the environments of the three countries, which influence the traditional and online newspaper sectors. The thesis highlights that, despite the difference in the newspaper industry in the three countries, the traditional model of journalism suffers continued decline of revenue and audience in all three. Chapter 3 studies the morphology of the newspapers and their web sites and notes national similarities, centering on daily newspapers. The research design is completed by content analysis. Chapter 4 analyzes the content forms between the newspapers and their web sites, especially the hyperlink practice and the presence of multimedia content. Chapter 5 is devoted to contextualization capacity of Internet news by analyzing hyperlinks’ trajectory, as proposed by selected newspapers and news-sites. However, the study also showed that the traditional newspapers’ web sites still fall short in using this potential. The utility of the technology for newspapers will only be fulfilled if the journalism resources ensure the essential treatment of information.

App-News via Smartphone – Die Zeitung der Zukunft?

Lee, Shin-Lian 12 February 2019 (has links)
The main purpose of this thesis is to study the impacts of media evolutionary changes nowadays on printing media markets in Germany, Taiwan and China. The media changes discussed in this study include the change of users’ behaviors, the digitization of media and the development of information and communication technologies (ICTs). Surveys show that all three countries exist big gaps between urban and rural areas in digital infrastructures, but there are significant differences between these countries in terms of user’s motives and behaviors. As the use of broadband, wireless and mobile phones getting more extensive in recent years, significant changes in media environment, individual and group behaviors and social development happened tremendously in all three countries. What strategies can the traditional printed media publishers adopt for keeping survival and competing with new digital competitors? How can they market their products by using digital and mobile forum? Or, to be more clear, what are their core problems, challenges and opportunities? In the final chapters, we will go further to review the comparisons and analyses of individual research results of these three countries, and discuss the impacts of digitization on their societies, customer’s behaviors and newspaper markets. Finally, this thesis will come up with conclusions to identify whether the 2 hypotheses true or false.

Évaluation concomitante des signatures fonctionnelles des réponses lymphocytaires T spécifiques des Antigènes Associés aux Tumeurs et des Cellules Tumorales Circulantes : Impact sur le pronostic des patients atteints de carcinome épidermoïde des voies aéro-digestives supérieures / Prognostic value of the concomitant evaluation of tumor-associated immune responses and circulating tumor cells in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma

Wu, Xianglei 02 June 2017 (has links)
We have evaluated herein two important parameters in the immunomonitoring of cancer patients: circulating tumor cells (CTC) as an indicator of “tumoral antigenic load” and tumor-associated antigens (TAA) specific T-cells. We firstly evaluated the diagnostic and prognostic value of CTC in Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma (HNSCC) by a systematic review and meta-analysis. We came to the conclusion that current evidence identifies the CTC detection test as an extremely specific but low sensitive test in HNSCC. In addition, the presence of CTC indicates a worse disease-free disease (DFS). Also, we report for the first time a rare case of extremely high enumeration of circulating tumor cells detected in a patient with squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity using the CellSearch® system. The absolute number of CTC could therefore predict a particular phase of cancer development as well as a poor survival, potentially contributing to personalized health. In addition, we describe an adaptation of the CellSearch® method that we have developed for detecting tumor cells in the cerebrospinal fluid of patients with carcinomatous meningitis. This new approach reaches a significantly improved sensitivity compared to conventional cytology. CellSearch® technology, applied to limited sample volumes and allowing an increased pre-analytical time, may be of great interest in the diagnosis of leptomeningeal metastases in patients with epithelial cancer. By a concomitant evaluation of CTC and TAA-specific lymphocyte responses in 24 HNSCC patients, we describe that CTC could be an independent indicator of immunogenic tumor burden. The absence of CTC, the presence of TAA-specific T-cells, or the combination of these, were all parameters showing a trend for a better overall survival or DFS. The amplitude and functional signatures of TAA-specific T-lymphocytes in patients with HNSCC were associated with the presence of CTC. These results suggest that a concomitant evaluation of these two parameters may be more pertinent for prognosis assessment as well as for treatment impact, especially in “checkpoint-inhibitors” new immunotherapies
