It argues that the captaincy of Ceará at that time, due to its condition on the periphery of Colonial Brazil, had a particular dynamic of relative equilibrium between the native indigenous population and the colonizing element, which prompted the development of a series of strategies of contact, between the Indians and the Europeans, to deal with one another. Those strategies included the exchange of goods and gifts for labor or indigenous collaboration in some enterprise, promises of mutual defense, veiled or explicit threats among others. It explores how the state of war between Portugal and the Dutch West Indies Company influenced the relations between Europeans and Indians on the northern captaincies of Brazil and, specially, how the Indians from Ceará positioned themselves toward the warring factions. It establishes how the Indian rebellion of 1644, when the Dutch garrison in Ceará was massacred, was the result of tensions between the Company and the local indigenous peoples over the exploitation of Indians as laborer and warriors, and how it was representative of a general crisis between the indigenous peoples and the Company in Dutch Brazil as a whole.

This PhD research aims to study the Portuguese-Brazilian insurrection before the Dutch who conquered the Northeast of Portuguese America in the period known as Dutch Brazil (1630-1654). Within this perspective, it is aimed to observe how the search for nobiliarchic titles, mercês, and material rewards guided the local uprising, being decisive elements for the occurrence of the battles against the Dutch invaders. For this purpose, it is used as daily documents of Portuguese and Dutch chroniclers, as well as letters from the Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino and those of the Conde da Torre, sent to liberate the Northeast in 1639. The gain of rewards by the Portuguese Crown, dependent on Spain in the scenario of the Iberian Union (1580-1640), allowed the uprisers to conquer rights that were extended to their descendants, as well as exerted political careers in the dimensions of the Portuguese Empire. Thus, the identity of being Portuguese was a mechanism of cohesion that made it possible for Sugar masters allied to subjects from lower social strata, such as slaves and natives, while providing conditions for Portugal to maintain its dominions in the New World / Doutor

À glória dos vencedores

Rodrigues, Michelle de Araujo Schampovski 14 December 2011 (has links)

As well as the possible influences of Jorge Margrave s Natural History of the Brazil, published in 1941, and Guilherme Piso s Natural History and Medicine of the Western India, published in 1957, could have had Barleus book. The work produced by Kaspar Barleus, Rerum in Brasilia et alibi gestarum, in 1647, was commissioned by Nassau who wished to make a report to highlight his accomplishments as an administrator during his tenure as leader of the Dutch company in Brazil. Nassau made available to Barleus narratives and drawings made during the Dutch occupation which led us to formulate a hypothesis of his reliance on these particular sources to write his book. After reading and reviewing the work of Barleus, reprinted in Portuguese in 1974, we ve found lot of similarities between his work and the works of Piso (1957) and Margrave (1941). These similarities let us to believe that our hypothesis is confirmed.

Representing a Nation of Tailors and Cobblers : A Study of Bulstrode Whitelocke´s Journal of the Swedish Embassy, 1653-1654

Martin, Rebecca January 2007 (has links)

In November 1653, a vessel arrived in the harbour town of Gothenburg, on the west coast of the Protestant monarchy of Sweden. Aboard the ship was the newly appointed English Ambassador Extraordinary, Bulstrode Whitelocke (1605-1675); jurist, Puritan and avid diary keeper. In his journal, Whitelocke noted down the entirety of what he was to experience during his stay in Sweden. From the heaps of papers he produced over his lifetime, he later edited this particular record under the title Journal of the Swedish Embassy. Spanning between 1653 and 1654, the pages of the journal contains information of the most mundane kind, as well as eye witness accounts of what must be recognised as a very interesting part of European history. More so, it reveals Whitelocke’s views on the political questions of his time, mainly presented through conversations with important actors from Swedish society, such as Queen Christina, Lord High Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna, and the Archbishop of Uppsala, Johannes Canuti Lenaeus. In the eyes of the Swedes, Whitelocke became a representative not only of the new Commonwealth of England, but of the new ideas that had formed the basis of its government. As such, he was often made to explain the conduct of his country men, as well as defend the recent events in England. Thus, through these recorded exchanges, an image of Whitelocke´s representation and of his views regarding the changes in England emerges from the pages. This Masters Thesis will analyse this image, as well as discuss Whitelocke’s political views, both practical and ideological, at the time of his embassy to Sweden.
