Da sujeição à subjetivação: a literatura como espaço de construção da subjetividade, os casos das obras Úrsula e A Escrava de Maria Firmina dos Reis / From subjection to subjectivity: literature as the subjectivity construction space through Maria Firmina dos Reis\'s works Ursula and Slave

Diogo, Luciana Martins 23 August 2016 (has links)
The presence of the black people in Brazilian literature was very discreet during the 19th century. Compelling realities in the streets, and in the structure of the colonial system, they were silenced in the major novels of that time. However, as this dissertation aims to show, Maria Firmina dos Reis (1825-1917) developed in her writings the first black characters (slave or freed slave) constituted as subjects in the Brazilian literature of the nineteenth-century. Thus, in dialogue with studies recovering female literary production produced during that century, this research sought to discuss the issue of black subjectivity representation in literary form through a multidisciplinary methodological approach that articulates the contributions of Literary Criticism, History and Sociology. Therefore, this thesis focuses on two works of the writer, which have clearly anti-slavery content: the novel \"Ursula\" (1859) and the short story \"Escrava\" (1887).

THE GRANDEST IMPROVEMENT IN THE COUNTRY: AN HISTORICAL AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL STUDY OF THE GREAT NORTH ROAD, N.S.W., 1825-1836

KARSKENS, Grace January 1985 (has links)
The line of road originally intended to link Sydney with the booming settlements of the Hunter Valley underwent a ten year survey and construction period, beginning in 1825 with Heneage Finch's hastily selected, winding line, and ending in 1836 with two small road gangs caught in a continuous cycle of construction and decay. In the interim period, however, the road had aroused the enthusiasm of the best surveyors and engineers available in the colony. These men envisioned a fine, all-encompassing, permanent thoroughfare - a most appropriate goal in view of the contemporary optimism with regard to the colony's future. The structures and formations were impressive and etensive and built as far as possible according to the latest principles emerging from the road building revolution in Britain. The methods were, of necessity, simplified in response to the colonial conditions of rugged terrain, vast distances and the large but unskilled and, for the main part, unwilling convict labour force. The results were highly successful, as is stille vident today, and never failed to impress early travellers and reassure them that they were, after all, in a 'civilised' country. The road never actually fulfilled its builders' plans. A steamboat service established between Sydney and the Hunter Valley robbed it of its role as a vital link, and other more hospitable or more direct routes were discovered and used by what traffic did proceed on land. After the few remaining gangs were finally withdrawn, seciton after section quickly fell into disuse and abandonment. Both the grand and modest structures and formations were left neglected, and thus preserved, to the present day.

"The Most Versatile Man": The Life, Ministry, and Piety of Basil Manly Jr.

Smallwood, William 18 June 2015 (has links)
This dissertation argues that the life and ministry of Basil Manly Jr. had remarkable impact on the spiritual lives of Southern Baptists. His ability to transform people through the diversity of his labors, which he personally felt were too broad, continues to exert meaningful sway upon his denomination, and more broadly, American evangelicalism. Manly must be remembered as a central figure in the establishment, shaping, and preservation of many of the enduring institutions of the Southern Baptist Convention—Sunday school, hymnody, and theological education—all while not compromising historic, orthodox beliefs of the church. By reviewing his primary sources, this dissertation develops a cohesive understanding of the themes and practice of piety demonstrated in the life and thought of Manly. The introduction explains the importance of Manly’s life, ministry, and piety in light of his influence within the Southern Baptist Convention. Chapter 2 analyzes the impact of the teaching and preaching of his father and the spiritual tradition that became known as the Charleston tradition with its emphasis on Calvinistic theology, orderly worship, and, most significantly in Manly’s life, an educated and professional clergy. Chapter 3 studies the influences upon Manly in the development of his piety during his theological education at two Northern institutions. Chapter 4 discusses the role of Manly played in the establishment of a Sunday school in every Baptist church for the conversion and spiritual growth of all but especially children and young people. Chapter 5 explores Manly’s work as not only a hymn writer but also an editor and compiler of hymns. The hymns written, tunes composed, and the hymnals edited by Manly are marks of a rich spirituality of worship. Chapter 6 examines Manly’s view of Scripture, chiefly his understanding of the doctrine of inspiration. Chapter 7, the conclusion, discusses the long-term impact of Manly not only on the Southern Baptist Convention but several Southern Baptist institutions. Manly’s piety, grounded firmly in and fashioned by Scripture, was instrumental in shaping the piety of future generations of Southern Baptists.

La mesure de l'expression : physiognomonie et caractère dans la Nouvelle méthode de Jean-Jacques Lequeu

Bédard, Jean-François January 1992 (has links)
The work of Jean-Jacques Lequeu (1757-1826) is often used by architectural historians to demonstrate the erosion of the principles of classical architecture at the end of the eighteenth century. The Nouvelle Methode appliquee aux Principes elementaires du dessin completed by Lequeu in 1792, a drawing method showing the correct proportions of the face obtained through geometry, reveal another Lequeu, one sympathetic to the architectural theories of his time. The similarities between the Nouvelle Methode and the Dissertation sur les especes naturelles by the Dutch naturalist Petrus Camper (1722-1789) show the importance of the notion of caractere in the structure of knowledge of the classical age as portrayed by Michel Foucault. Simultaneously a theory of physionomy and a theory of architecture, the Nouvelle Methode demonstrates that the theory of caractere in both disciplines, far from announcing the birth of the modern age, is central to the pursuit of order which sustained architecture in the classical age.
