Chava Shapiro : a woman before her time

Caruso, Naomi January 1991 (has links)
This is a study of Chava Shapiro, a woman writer, born in 1876 in the Ukraine, who died in 1943 in Nazi Czechoslovakia. It describes her conventional Hasidic upbringing, her successful rebellion against it and her subsequent studies in Switzerland which led to a career in Hebrew journalism. It follows her return to Russia in 1914, her escape to Czechoslovakia after the pogroms of 1919 and 24 years later her tragic end in Terezin. / Dominating the study is the well-known Hebrew writer, Reuven Brainin, 1862-1939, with whom Chava Shapiro fell in love and who exerted an extraordinary influence on her life. / Using original, never before published materials from the Jewish Public Library Archives in Montreal, the study seeks to define the woman as a feminist and a Hebrew writer.

Simpson, Anne 11 1900 (has links)

(Inter)disciplinary roots : a study of influence and collaboration in the work of Fred Newton Scott

Davis, Ivan January 2002 (has links)
Building on Donald and Patricia Stewarts' The Life and Legacy of Fred Newton Scott (1997), this dissertation addresses aspects of Scott's life which have been ignored or left underdeveloped in the work of composition historians, including Scott's early education at the Indiana State Normal School and at Battle Creek College, along with his personal, academic and professional relationships with Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, John Dewey, and Joseph Villiers Denney. This examination, providing a more precise knowledge of Scott's academic and professional life, clarifies the significance and originality of Scott's contributions to the discipline. At the Indiana State Normal School, Scott was exposed to an innovative adaptation of Pestalozzian and Herbartian educational philosophies. The philosophy and methodologies employed at the school likely influenced Scott's thinking about teacher training, while encouraging his adaptation of psychology in the teaching of English.Scott again was exposed to a reform-minded educational agenda at Battle Creek College. There, Scott encountered an holistic educational program that sought to improve the intellectual, physical, and spiritual components of students' lives.Through his long friendship with Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, Scott gained an intimate knowledge of the medical profession, an awareness Scott utilized in his own writing about understanding student errors in composition. Scott's academic and professional relationship with John Dewey at the University of Michigan demonstrates their multiple shared interests and activities. The Thought News newspaper project illustrates their attempt to implement philosophy into practical arenas. Their working relationship, as well as Scott's educational background at the Indiana State Normal School and at Battle Creek College, suggests that Dewey has been erroneously viewed as the source of Scott's innovative approach to composition. Finally, Scott's collaborative relationship with Joseph Villiers Denney, the writer with whom Scott wrote his most popular textbooks, illustrates the importance Scott placed on collaboration as well as the competence of those with whom he collaborated. Denney's own scholarly work in composition demonstrates his originality and resourcefulness as an equal partner in their collaborations. / Department of English

The First World War (1914-1918) not only mobilized the belligerent nations in the battlefields, but also took place on air and at seas. The use of new technology to conquer the enemy was a mark of the First World War. However, it is important to emphasize that, apart from the industry, this conflict mobilized the press and made it a propitious moment for the newspapers to take a stand and engage in the combat in defense of groups and ideals. In Brazil, even before the end of neutrality, a clear statement arised only three years after lead-off hostilities, when the Allie's fields had already been chosen. The daily, O Estado de S. Paulo, wasn't absent of debates and ideologies on the War, and with Júlio Mesquita's feather, its director, the journal provided its readers with interpretations on conflicts. The morning pages, headlined "”Boletim Semanal da Guerra” [Weekly War Reports], weekly described four years of battle broadened beyond to what contemporaries expected, among distant nations in European continent. Withal, this system-oriented approach assays all Júlio Mesquita's writings. Indeed, it aims to check how his texts, written along the war events, brings forth a subjective view on the First World War, with the flavor of ongoing transformations in this active international scenario. Therefore, this work regards interpretations outlined by the morning journal director, concerning to map representations published on the First World War, as well as affinities between Júlio Mesquita's writings and its sources. / FAPESP: 2014/17512-7

Aspectos lógicos da axiomática da geometria plana

Martins, Denis January 2018 (has links)
This study presents the development of the axiomatic method based on Euclides and his work Elements. It discusses possible logical errors, the postulate of parallels and how those led mathematicians to conceive non-euclidean geometries and the independence of axioms. The consolidation of the axiomatic method in mathematics is attributed to David Hilbert and his magistral work Foundations of Geometry. It established a new axiomatic for the plane euclidean geometry, more modern and without logical errors as seen in Euclid's work. By formalizing such axioms in a first order language, we find issues with the continuity axioms as they are not formalizable in that order. Lastly, we present a model for the euclidean geometry and another for the non-euclidean geometry.

The Many Battles of Glorieta Pass: Struggles for the Integrity of a Civil War Battlefield

Hull, William Edward, 1945- 08 1900 (has links)
This study focuses on modern-day attempts to preserve the site where Union volunteers from Colorado defeated a Confederate army from Texas at the 1862 Battle of Glorieta Pass to curtail Confederate expansion westward. When construction workers in 1987 accidently uncovered remains of the war dead, a second battle of Glorieta Pass ensued. Texas and New Mexico officials quarreled over jurisdiction of the war casualties. Eventually Congress authorized the National Park Service to expand the Pecos National Park through purchase and donation of land to include the battlesite. Sources include local records, newspapers, federal and state documents, and interviews with preservation participants.
