The theory and application of transformation in statistics

Kanjo, Anis Ismail January 1962 (has links)
This paper is a review of the major literature dealing with transformations of random variates which achieve variance stabilization and approximate normalization. The subject can be said to have been initiated by a genetical paper of R. A. Fisher (1922) which uses the angular transformation Φ = 2 arcsin√p to deal with the analysis of proportions p with E(p) = P. Here it turns out that Var Φ is almost independent of P and so stabilizes the variance. Some fourteen years later Bartlett introduced the so-called square-root transformation which achieves variance stabilization for variates following a Poisson distribution. These two transformations and their ramifications in theory and application are fully discussed. along with refinements introduced by later writers, notably Curtiss (1943) and Anscombe (1948). Another important transformation discussed is one which refers to an analysis of observations on to a logarithmic scale, and here there are uses in analysis of variance situations and theoretical problems in the field of estimation: in the case of the latter, the work of D. J. Finney (1941) is considered in some detail. The asymptotic normality of the transformation is also considered. Transformations primarily designed to bring about ultimate normality in distribution are also included. In particular, there is reference to work on the chi-square probability integral (Fisher), (Wilson and Hilferty (1931)) and the logarithmic transformation of a correlation coefficient (Fisher (1921)). Other miscellaneous topics referred include i. the probability integral transformation (Probits), with applications in bioassay: ii. applications of transformation theory to set up approximate confidence intervals for distribution parameters (BIom (1954)): iii. transformations in connection with the interpretation of so-called 'ranked' data. / M.S.

A revision of the neotropical genus Erilophodes Warren (Lepidoptera, Geometridae)

Covell, Charles VanOrden 02 March 2010 (has links)
The Geometrid moth genus Erilophodes Warren was redefined, using morphological characters of the wings, abdomen, hind tibiae and genitalia. Two new species, E. Spinosa and E. toddi, were described on the basis of male characteristics. Females of these species are indistinguishable from each other and from those of E. colorata Warren, the type species. Ischnopterix Wagneri Le Moult was treated as a junior subjective synonym of E. colorata Warren. Three species referred to Erilophodes Warren were removed from the genus. E. indistincta Warren was transferred to the genus Ischnopterix Hubner. E. marmorinata Bastelberger was placed as a junior subjective synonym of Neodesmodes semialbata Warren. E. arana (Dognin) was transferred to the genus Neodesmodes Warren. Erilophodes Warren was found to occupy an area from Espirito Santo on the southern coast of Brazil to Montevideo, Uruguay, westward through the northeastern tip of Argentina into southeastern Paraguay. There seems to be considerable overlap in the ranges of the three species. Placement of Erilophodes Warren in the subfamily Ennominae was verified. With some reservations the genus was retained in the tribe Nacophorini. / Master of Science

Power losses in massive, solid, saturable iron

Fray, Earl Napoleon 26 April 2010 (has links)
The results of the representative calculation, tabulated in Table 2, are plotted in Figure 28. Inspection of Figure 28 reveals that without saturation the magnetic intensity decays quite rapidly as we move into the iron. The rate of decay becomes slower as saturation is introduced, and slower still when hysteresis is present. The significance of this may be realized by considering the Maxwell equation. / Master of Science

Rioux, William 25 March 2024 (has links)
This dissertation focuses on the thought of the German writer Hermann Hesse and explores the theme of the meaning of human existence. The main objective of this study is to support the hypothesis that, according to Hermann Hesse, the meaning of human existence is found in the search for self-harmonization. To achieve this objective, we have favored the philosophical analysis of literary works, more specifically the analysis of Hermann Hesse's novels Narcissus and Goldmund and The Glass Beads Game. The writer's thought becomes clearer when we take into consideration three fundamental ideas which he addresses in the essays On the Idea of Unity and A Bit of Theology: the development of the soul, the fluctuation of opposite poles and the unity beyond oppositions. The examination of these three ideas allows us to establish a theoretical and conceptual framework for analyzing the selected novels. By studying the two novels, we see that the lives of the characters who are of particular interest to us, namely Goldmund and Joseph Valet, acquire meaning when they seek harmonization of themselves. This harmonization is characterized by a desire to bring together the poles "Geist" (reason or mind) and "Natur" (nature) - inherent to the human being. Although there is a convergence of these poles at the end of the novels, their essence makes perfect harmonization impossible. We argue that this necessary failure sheds light on Hesse's thought and his conception of human existence by indicating that the meaning of existence is found in seeking the harmonization of our opposing tendencies - rather than in their effective harmonization.

Absalom, Absalom! A Study of Structure

Major, Sylvia Beth Bigby 08 1900 (has links)
The conclusion drawn from this study is that the arrangement of material in Absalom, Absalom! is unified and purposeful. The structure evokes that despair that is the common denominator of mankind. It reveals both the bond between men and the separation of men; and though some of the most dramatic episodes in the novel picture the union of men in brotherly love, most of the material and certainly the arrangement of the material emphasize the estrangement of men. In addition, by juxtaposing chapters, each separated from the others by its own structural and thematic qualities, Faulkner places a burden of interpretation on the reader suggestive of the burden of despair that overwhelms the protagonists of the novel.

Mujica Bermúdez, Luis Felipe 11 April 2014 (has links)
Tesis
