Experimental comparisons of three different treatment approaches to anger control

Moon, James Robert January 1981 (has links)
A review of the anger literature, an anger model, and an anger treatment study were presented. Various dependent measures were utilized including physiological, behavioral, cognitive, life satisfaction, and expectancy measures. A 4 X 2 research design was utilized. There were four experimental groups with ten subjects per group, measured pre- and posttreatment. The experiment groups included a problem solving group, a social skills group, a cognitive behavior modification group, and an attention control group. Therapists were counterbalanced across groups. It was found that problem solving, social skills, and cognitive behavior modification approaches to anger control were all successful in reducing anger. The cognitive, social skills, and problem solving groups were all successful in reducing anger cognitions and aggressive behavior, however only the social skills and problem solving groups were successful in increasing assertive behaviors. Thus, it appeared that the problem solving and social skills approaches taught the subjects anger control by teaching them to competently interact with their environment. The cognitive approach appeared to teach a very passive strategy for anger reduction in that the subjects in this group uniformly interacted less with the environment when faced with an anger-provoking stimulus. The physiological data yielded inconclusive results, and none of the treatments appeared to significantly affect life satisfaction. Criticisms and suggestions for future research were presented. Future research should include investigation of female/male anger differences, development of a more direct behavioral assessment technique for anger, and exploration of the role of anger in the etiology and maintenance of various clinical syndromes. / Ph. Electrophoretic investigation of genetic characteristics in the pine vole

McBride, Jenness Elizabeth January 1981 (has links)
Genetic homogeneity among endrin-resistant and -susceptible pine vole populations and between voles that. survived or died on restricted feed intake was tested using starch-gel electrophoresis of 5 polymorphic enzyme markers. Three apple orchards annually treated with endrin for the past 15 years and 3 non-treated orchards in southwestern Virginia were sampled in Fall 1980, and in 2 of each orchard type in Spring 1981 (N=786). LD-50’s were uniformly low in all Fall orchards, increasing in only one endrin-treated orchard by Spring 1981 (from 2.4 to 64.5 mg/kg). Orchard, season, and genotype variables were jointly dependent at all 5 loci, but average heterozygosity was similar among the orchards (decreasing from 0.490 to 0.470 in sprayed orchards and from 0.548 to 0.494 in unsprayed orchards). The one incidence of increased endrin tolerance entailed no unique genetic component related unequivocally to endrin treatment. Genetic heterogeneity was suggested among 36 pine voles subjected to 70% ad libitum feed intake for 24 days. Although approximately equally composed of males and females, only one-fourth of the 33.3% that died were females. Weight losses did not differ significantly between the survivors and casualties on restriction (22% and 24% of initial weight, respectively). Mean individual heterozygosity was greater for females (0.809) than for males (0.625) over all groups, and greater in both sexes for survivors of the feed restriction (0.742) compared to those that died (0.576), but these differences were statistically nonsignificant. The data suggested a relationship between survival and heterozygosity that deserves closer study. / Master of Science

An exact plane-stress solution for a class of problems in orthotropic elasticity

Erb, David Alden 15 August 2009 (has links)
An exact solution for the stress field within a rectangular slab of orthotropic material is found using a two-dimensional Fourier series formulation. The material is required to be in plane stress, with general stress boundary conditions, and the principle axes of the material must be parallel to the sides of the rectangle. Two load cases similar to those encountered in materials testing are investigated using the solution. The solution method developed is seen to have potential uses in stress analysis of composite structures. / Master of Science

A critical analysis of the legal role and functions of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)

Alhaiyaf, Khalid Nasser January 2014 (has links)
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is an international organisation established in 1981 between six Gulf countries, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). According to the GCC Supreme Council, it was established to foster and manage cooperation between these countries and to serve their common interests. This thesis explores another factor, that it was established in response to specific security concerns in the context of the energy crisis that arose after the 1970‟s war between Egypt and Israel, the Soviet attack on Afghanistan and the Iranian revolution which was followed by the Iran-Iraq war. It is a doctrinal study that aims to determine where the GCC fits as an international institution within the framework of international law and international institutions particularly. Accordingly, the aim of this thesis is to analyse critically what the GCC is and does exactly. More specifically, it examines the type of organisation the GCC is, its relationship with member states and other international organisations and considers its future role as a key regional organisation. This thesis analyses the reason for its establishment, leaders‟ opinions about its nature, the GCC's methods for producing collective political attitudes and economic cooperation. It also assesses the kinds of laws the GCC produces, their status, whether hard and soft law, as well as their enforcement. This analysis is conducted from a combined legal positivist and international relations framework. From Nasserism to the Arab Spring, the GCC has withstood the waves of political movements in the Middle East. This thesis provide a critical analysis of the GCC‟s overall achievements and aims, with a particular focus on its response to key political developments such as these. This thesis argues that GCC members have been using the GCC as means to achieve their own ends. Due to the nature of their governing systems – absolute monarchy – they are using the GCC to maintain the security and stability of their own ruling systems. However, while the GCC has always focused on security and economic cooperation, its achievements are stronger in the latter because security is linked to external factors.

La transferencia en la cura psicoanalítica de Jacques Lacan y André Green

Flores Galindo Rivera, Carlos Raúl 06 February 2017 (has links)
The objective of this research is to describe the theoretical constructs of Jacques Lacan and André Green on transfer in psychoanalytic cure. Both authors find a common origin in both their theoretical constructs are based on the work of S. Freud. On this point I find two very different uses of the transfer in the search for a cure that maintains common characteristics. The main difference is that A. Green uses to transfer as part of his performance in transfer. While Lacan, in the direction indicated by Freud, discarded the use of transfer against attributing the analyst himself. In these two uses of the transfer contract I find that for Green analyst recognizes the tremendous influence it has on the analyzed and La transferencia en la cura de Lacan y Green used to find a cure. While Lacan proposes a psychoanalysis that is based on not use this power and orients its end, its cure, an analizante released from the influence of the analyst / Tesis

The sound of colour : the intellectual foundations of Domenichino's approach to music and painting

MacKenzie, Rowland Charles January 1998 (has links)
The debate about the nature of the theoretical basis of the training under the Carracci can be expanded by an analysis of the paintings of Domenichino, who, as the heir to Annibale, might be expected to reveal something of his master's teaching. Domenichino is unusual by the manner in which his painting is grounded in colour harmonies which match those of sound, and in the fact that this modulation is supported by the theoretical principles which he later developed in the company of Matteo Zaccolini in Rome. This thesis will explore the theoretical basis of Domenichino's colour and his music, something which he learnt in the Carracci workshop and developed in the practice of the new manner of painting effected by the Carracci in Bologna. His interest in music was encouraged in Rome by his friendship with Giovanni Battista Agucchi. The commission for the paintings in Sant' Andrea della Valle gave Domenichino the opportunity to demonstrate the relationship between music and painting because the four pendentives of the crossing were designed as an extension of the apparati constructed for the Devotion of the Forty Hours.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 1983-05-02 / This work is the result of a field research carried out during the year of 1990 in Porto Velho - RO, with the assistence of agricultral experts and use secondary sources of information, aiming to get acquainted with Public Policy for agriculture in the state, to identify and to analyse the result of those policies and present suggestions for chenges considering the migration. The study describes and analyses the State Public Policies, presenting a historical vision of its economical farmation by reconstituting its past, fron the extractivistic stages and the present days. The economic evolution of Rondonis was analysed, and fact that the influence of the economic and social facts upon the migratory flows toward Porto Velho has been raising, proportionally from the very beginning of its history until the present days becarnse notorious. Problems resulting from the increasing urbanization of the cities, specially affected by the migration process of the rural population, and population' s troubles caused by the insuitable agricultural Policy has also been approached. I carne to the conclusion that the State Policy for agriculture IS not appropriate due to several reasons, which wiIl be pointed out in this work. Finally, suggestions are given to reformulate the State Policy for agriculture, to overcome some of the great problems concerning this matter which affects mainly the migrating population that come from rural areas to the urban surroundings.
