Touchpoint: a place to connect with the unmanifest to know and celebrate the unity and diversity of all that is

Williams, Marquis Kenneth January 1998 (has links)
architecture is form making form manifest is inner peace a quiet joy that tingles and relaxes each nerve it touches boundaries of time and space dissolve energy unfolds form in the unmanifest no boundaries no time no space just is-ness a reality not known by touch taste smell hear see being-ness of the place a sudden awareness in a moment and state of peace and openness a direct apprehension of knowing form in the unmanifest that form can have many manifestations appear different that level of being no time no space no limits Architecture reaches into that level the source / Master of Architecture

Into a suburban landscape: a proposal of housing for the future of the American suburb

Bailey, David January 1998 (has links)
Architecture is simultaneously a creative and a destructive endeavour. As mankind has become more aware of the natural cycles of creation and destruction, we have begun to perceive that building resources are not available without consequence. Urban development is also a complex construct which follows these cycles of creation and destruction. Unfortunately, the primary processes of urban development are far too often misunderstood. Fragmented and neglected areas have become commonplace throughout many cities as they undergo the continuous change which has become a seemingly inevitable part of modern society. As architects, we should focus our abilities on the more efficient and thoughtful use of land and existing infrastructures as a way of refining the cyclical patterns of contemporary urban development. This thesis examines the possibility of repairing isolated and disjointed suburban development in and around American cities. We will explore how the continuous refinement of existing development might occur in just one example of a socially and functionally fragmented area of a city. A prototypical suburban housing block is proposed as the basic unit of repair for this particular suburban landscape. A building consisting of thirty-six housing units was designed to be constructed in an existing suburban business district, with the intent of creating the most positive impact on existing development with the least expenditure of energy and space. The architecture of the building itself arises from the following critical investigation into the fundamental elements of housing. / Master of Architecture

An architectural vernacular and the design of college park airport museum

Gaydos, Michael C. January 1998 (has links)
I will show that architecture can evolve through a design process that relies on a systematic approach rather than an episodic one. I have created a design for an airport museum through the use of an architectural vernacular. The use of this language helps to eliminate random forms and serendipity. Through the use of this vernacular I will be able to rationalize, validate and justify my design. / Master of Architecture

Μπλιώνα, Μαρία 23 July 2008 (has links)
The aim of this essay is the development of a contemporary and flexible Database in which all the Greek landslides will be recorded in a way that the data retrieval and processing will be fast and easy. All the information is stamped by territorial data in order to be handed out with Geographical Information Systems (GIS). For the creation of this Database was necessary to revise the Statistical Inventory Card according to contemporary specifications. This Statistical Inventory Card includes all the parameters that enter into the problem such as lithology, geometry and hydrogeology of the unstable area. It also concludes the causes, triggers, consequences and protection measures of a landslide. Clues have been gathered for 397 landslides that happened the period 1998-2003 and hit the greater Greek region. The clues were statistical processed and analysed in order to extract some indicational conclusions for the landslides’ genesis and demonstration mechanism as long as the evaluation of the landslides’ allocation according to geological data. This first registration of the 397 landslides shows that this particular Database can significantly contribute to the editing of hazard zonation maps which are related to landslides in Greek territory. All the clues that are included in the Database are taken from technical essays that exist in the landslides’ file in the Institute of Geological and Mineral Research (IGME). The Database was designed with Microsoft Access software and then was filled with all the above information for the period 1998-2003 as was already referred.

An archive: housing the written history of the citizens of Bucks County, Pennsylvania

Graeff, Michael 25 August 2008 (has links)
The growth of any community is marked many times over by the coming of progress which may be regarded either with promise or as a threat. The history of Doylestown records the arrival of train travel as an event. It would be a remarkable change that could put a small town on the map by opening doors of travel and communication in the heart of rural farmland. The tracks entered the town from the southwest and ended a few blocks downhill from the original crossing of Main and State Streets at its center. The rail line would now be the demarcation between town and country - an edge. A passenger station was built as were an array of light industrial and farm trade buildings, splayed out in rows along the lengths of track. The empty lots between center and edge became a weave of streets lined with town houses constructed to acknowledge the train with large front porches open wide welcoming the arrival of both the familiar and the stranger. The ebb and flow of pedestrians descending and ascending from town to train and train to town became the daily ritual established by such progress. It is in this routine and the willing communication between buildings that lay a complimentary existence defining the character of a neighborhood. It is a further part of progress that centers of activity with their subsequent community of buildings become obsolete. Yet from obsolescence may be found rebirth, and the rail yard was no exception. Commerce waned and then shifted from industrial and agrarian means to service oriented trade with each vacant structure quietly resurrected under adaptive re-use. The commuter line still operates though continually threatened with closure. A truth made evident by the perpetually locked doors of the station. The only activity that has a direct connection to the rail yard's past is the ritual of the commuting passengers. Pedestrian traffic into town still beats its daily walk up the stairs and sidewalks along the same streets. The numbers are now supplemented though by a stream of vehicles as evidenced by the number of parking spaces fit neatly into the available open nooks of the old freight house. Despite these progressive changes what is of greatest significance is that none has occurred to the detriment of the fabric of the existing neighborhood. It remains a distinctly vibrant edge only because new activities were necessary in offering new opportunities and a feeling of continuum. The site for the archive therefore lies at this edge of town. / Master of Architecture

The warp and weft of Fries, Virginia

Flanigan, Katherine Janet 25 August 2008 (has links)
Fries, Virginia exists because of the Fries Textile Mill. The closing of the mill calls into question the future of the community of Fries. The decline of the town can be tied to the closing of the mill. Conversely, the revitalization of the mill should help to reshape the town. Even as it stands empty, the mill continues to be a massive presence on the hillside overlooking the New River. It is possible to turn this symbol of the past into a hope for the future. About a century ago an imposing brick building intruded on the serenity of that hillside above the New River. That building was an intrusion then, but it is an integral part of the landscape now. The mill is the landmark that defines the town. It is also functionally obsolete. New construction at the mill is necessary to turn it into something that can be productive in today's economy. The new construction at the mill is designed to reveal and emphasize the qualities of the building and the town which already exist. The existing mill structure has become the warp, and a new structure is to be woven into it. It is designed to enhance the old structure and to do it in a way that is less intrusive than the original construction. Three new buildings have been sculpted out of the existing mill, through carefully adding new structure and subtracting from the existing building. The mill has been modified so that it might fit in today's world, and the town of Fries is about to begin its next chapter. / Master of Architecture
