Thesis (MMus) -- University of Stellenbosch, 2000. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The topic of this thesis is the life and music of Hendrik Hofmeyr, from his birth in 1957
until July 1999. The discussion on his life focusses on the events that influenced the
establishment of his works and also those that had an effect on the style in which
Hofmeyr composes. Although he experienced a steady development and growth as a
composer, Hofmeyr's ten year stay in Italy and the event of the 1997 Queen
Elisabeth of Belgium Composition Competition can be mentioned as major influences
on his life and thus on his work.
Hofmeyr's ideas on music are discussed in Chapter 2. To understand the intention of
his music, it is important to know something of Hofmeyr's approach to music. The
chapter concludes that Hofmeyr can be described as a 'romantic' composer which
provides the reason why he has always been outspoken against the avant-garde
which characterises much of the artmusic of the zo" century.
The style analysis of the following chapter looks at three important parameters of any
composer's style: harmony, melody and form. It further also discusses Hofmeyr's
use of counterpoint and the specific playing techniques he requires of instruments.
These two aspects stand out as particular to the composer's style. Due to the scope
of the thesis, these aspects are dealt with in a limited way.
A more detailed discussion of two compositions follow, the song cycle Alleenstryd
and the String Quartet. Besides an analysis of both works, attention is also given to
how the composer's ideas on music are manifested in these works. The thesis
concludes with a detailed list of works including all works composed up to July 1999.
50 compositions are listed. To allow for maximum exposure of each work, the
duration as well as a description of each work are added to the otherwise standard
information. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie tesis behandel Hendrik Hofmeyr se lewe en werk as komponis vanaf sy
geboorte (1957) tot en met Julie 1999. Die beskrywing van sy lewe is daarop gerig
om aan te dui hoe die gebeure in sy lewe die totstandkoming van sy komposisies en
die styl van sy musiek beïnvloed het. Hoewel daar 'n geleidelike ontwikkeling in sy
groei as komponis bestaan, kan sy tienjarige verblyf in Italië en die Koningin
Elisabeth van België Komposisiekompetisie in 1997 as belangrike invloede uitgelig
word.
In hoofstuk 2 word Hofmeyr se idees oor musiek bespreek. Om die intensie en
gedaante van Hofmeyr se musiek te verstaan, is dit belangrik om hierdie
uitgangspunte van die komponis te begryp. In die hoofstuk word die gevolgtrekking
gemaak dat Hofmeyr in wese 'n 'romantikus' is en dat hy daarom reeds sedert sy
studentejare sterk uitgesproke is teen die avant-garde wat 20ste eeuse kunsmusiek
kenmerk.
Die stylanalise wat daarna gemaak word, behandel drie belangrike parameters van
enige komponis se styl: harmonie, melodie en vorm. Verder sluit dit ook Hofmeyr se
gebruik van kontrapunt in en die spesifieke speeltegnieke wat hy van instrumente
verlang. Hierdie twee aspekte staan uit as besondere eienskappe van die komponis
se musiek. Vanweë die omvang van die tesis, is die bespreking van hierdie aspekte
redelik beperk.
In Meer gedetaileerde bespreking van twee werke volg, naamlik die sangsiklus
Alleenstryd en die Strykkwartet. Buiten 'n analise word ook na ander aspekte van
hierdie werke gekyk, soos byvoorbeeld die wyse waarop die komponis se
uitgangspunte oor musiek in hierdie werke tot uiting kom. Die tesis sluit af met 'n
volledige werklys wat alle werke tot en met Julie 1999 insluit. Daar is altesaam 50
werke. Om soveel as moontlik inligting te verskaf, word buiten die standaard-inligting,
ook die tydsduur en 'n beskrywende paragraaf oor elke komposisie ingesluit.

Hieruit blyk duidelik 'n korrespondensie of ekwivalensie tussen die tydsgees en
diskoers van die huidige fin de millennium en die van die 19de-eeuse fin de
siecle. Die titel van die tesis is ontleen aan die gedig "Greenwichtyd" uit Snel
grys fantoom (1986:29):
Dit als terwyl ek stil slaap anderkant

Omdat al sewe bundels van die digter ondersoek is, kon slegs drie gedigte in
diepte geanaliseer word, naamlik "Correspondences" uit Wordende naak
(1990:22), "Studie van 'n portret van 'n man" uit Snel grys fantoom
(1986:56) en "Vlees van die berg" uit Vleiswond (1993:51-52). Die gedig
"Correspondences", wat seminaal is vir die hipotese wat in hierdie studie
gestel word, kom in 'n eie hoofstuk aan bod; "Studie van 'n portret van 'n
man" is aanvullend tot die hipotese dat De Lange hom met die kunstenaars van
die fin de siecle vereenselwig; terwyl "Vlees van die berg" op vele wyses De
Lange se digterlike preokkupasies weerspieël.
Enkele aspekte van die kunsstrominge van die Dekadentisme, Estetisisme en
Simbolisme, wat in die eeuwending voorkom en ook in De Lange se verse
neerslag vind, word in afsonderlike hoofstukke bespreek. Die digter se sosiopolitieke
betrokkenheid wat deur die meeste kritici in die verlede misken is,
word bevestig. As gevolg daarvan dat mistisisme en metapoësie by De Lange
dikwels in 'n enkele gedig saamsmelt, word hierdie aspekte ten slotte in 'n
afsonderlike hoofstuk onder die loep geneem.
Daar word deurgaans gebruik gemaak van verwysings na geselekteerde gedigte
uit De Lange se oeuvre, telkens gesitueer binne die konteks van die
postmoderniteit. Ten einde die dinamika van intertekstuele en interdiskursiewe
prosesse te demonstreer, word intertekstuele ekskursies of intertekstuele
cruising dikwels onderneem. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigates the 19th century cultural fin de siecle intertexts in
Johann de Lange's predominantly postmodernistic poetry in order to test the
hypothesis that his work reveals strong correspondences to art forms of the
previous turn of the century. As a result a correspondence or an equivalence
between the cultural climates and discourses of the relevant ages, viz. the
present fin de millennium and the fin de siecle of the 19th century, is
indicated. The origin of the title of the thesis is the poem "Greenwichtyd"
from Snel grys fantoom (1986:29):

The volume of work involved in the examination of the poet's entire oeuvre of
seven volumes precluded the exhaustive analysis of vast numbers of poems.
For this reason only three poems have been analysed in any depth. These are
"Correspondences" from Wordende naak (1990:22), "Studie van 'n portret van
'n man" from Snel grys fantoom (1986:56) and "Vlees van die berg" from
Vleiswond (1993:51-52). The poem "Correspondences" which is seminal to
the hypothesis posed in this study is discussed in a separate chapter; "Studie
van 'n portret van 'n man" is supplementary to the hypothesis that De Lange
identifies with the artists of the fin de siecle; while "Vlees van die berg"
reflects many of De Lange's poetic preoccupations.
A few aspects of decadence (in the cultural sense), aestheticism and
symbolism, schools of art prevalent at the turn of the century which all find
expression in De Lange's poems, are examined in separate chapters. The
sosio-political commitment of the poet, unrecognised by most critics in the
past, is confirmed. Because De Lange often merges mysticism and metapoetry
in a single poem, these aspects are finally investigated together in one chapter.
Reference is made throughout to selected poems from De Lange's oeuvre as
situated within the context of postmodernity. In order to demonstrate the
dynamics of intertextual and interdiscursive processes, intertextual excursions
or "cruises" are often undertaken.

Latin American women writers and the growing potential of political consciousness.Shea, Maureen Elizabeth. January 1987 (has links)
This dissertation provides a feminist reading of the works of Latin American women writers since the decade of the sixties to the present who focus on the particular historical moment of their times from a political perspective. A systematic study of the narrative figure in novels by Dora Alonso, Elena Poniatowska, Claribel Alegria and Darwin Flakoll, and Isabel Allende, reveals an awareness of the undercurrents of oppression existent in their societies based on racial and class stereotypes with a growing understanding of oppression based on sex. From the perspective of the female narrator in Tierra Inerme by the Cuban writer Dora Alonso, the Cuban social structure before 1959 is condemned for its inequality on the basis of class, race, and sex. However, the perspective of the narrator reveals that she has not entirely escaped the prejudices that permeate her society concerning women. Hasta no verte Jesus mio, by the Mexican writer Elena Poniatowska concentrates on the testimony of Jesusa Palancares who condemns the structural inequality existent in Mexican society. Although Palancares' perspective reveals an awareness of the unequal treatment of women, because of her underprivileged status she concentrates on oppression based on class. In Cenizas de Izalco by Darwin Flakoll from the United States and the Salvadoran Claribel Alegria, the 1931 massacre of the peasants in El Salvador is condemned. However, through the contrasting perspectives of the male and female narrators, oppression on the basis of sex is most emphasized. La casa de los espiritus by the Chilean Isabel Allende depicts brutal class, racial and sexual oppression in Chile from the 1920's to 1973. It is in this novel that sexual oppression is portrayed most vividly, again through the contrasting perspectives of the male and female narrators. Although a growing awareness of sexual oppression emerges in the novels studied becoming most emphatic in this decade through an awakening feminist consciousness, the perspective of the narrators emphasize to varying degrees the importance of solidarity among women to combat injustice of every form to achieve a more equitable existence for all oppressed people.

"Language as Disclosure in Five Modernist American Works" comprises a series of Heideggerian readings of James's The Turn of the Screw, Williams's In the American Grain, Faulkner's As I Lay Dying, Hemingway's Death in the Afternoon, and Barth's Lost in the Funhouse. Each text is taken as a single and separate performance of poetic language. The readings do not interpret or explain the texts but attempt to follow them in a thinking, to map what shows up and in what relations. The attempt is to get past the roadblock of "ambiguity" that characterizes modernist texts, not by deciding the undecidable but by exploring it. The dissertation explores the nature or function of language. In James literality works to indicate, to evoke, to found and maintain as well as to violate or subvert a human order. Language borders and opposes the abyss in the story, and it is at this border and in this conflict that reality originates. Williams too revises the notion of origin as he proposes a new "method" of "composition" whereby a poet in the act of asserting and proving himself sets forth not only his own potency but that of his ground, his locality, his period and his time. In the Faulkner story representative language has become disconnected from life, is irrelevant, ineffectual, dysfunctional. However, in spite of its explicit indictment of words, the work discloses a new ontology, a new standard of value, and an originary function for words. In the Hemingway story language or the work of art (the bullfight, here) is the site, the occasion, and the agency in and by which "facts," things that actually happen, rise into appearance upon the horizon of death. In these modernist works we find the function of language to be, in some sense, disclosure. With the Barth story we pass into a milder postmodern atmosphere, but we find the same antagonists, language and not-language. Ostensibly language is impotent; thematically the rational paradigm is overwhelmed by objectivity. I claim, however, that language diminished and exposed is still working by modernist standards to provoke into view the potentiality that representative language cannot express.

Uncivilized women and erotic strategies of border zones or demythologizing the romance of conquest.Armstrong, Jeanne Marie. January 1996 (has links)
The contact of two different cultures in the colonization process produces a zone of cultural mingling that resembles Victor Turner's concept of "liminality" referring to states or persons that elude classification. This study considers the repercussions of colonization on the lives of women characters in novels about four different "post-colonial" contexts--Native American, Jamaican, Irish and Mexican American. These novels reflect both the unique historical circumstances of each context and common themes that occur due to colonization and transcend the specific cultures such as the mourning of personal and collective loss, liminal states of consciousness and mingling of cultures. The introductory chapter examines the particular historical contexts of each novel and the theories of Abdul JanMohamed and Frantz Fanon on colonization. This study also applies the work of Victor Turner, Mary Douglas, Julia Kristeva, Gloria Anzaldua, Homi Bhaba and others to an examination of the subversive cultural formations that evolve through the boundary dissolution of colonization. Chapter two considers Louise Erdrich's novel Tracks in which the decimation of the Anishinabe people is the context for the three primary characters who have experienced personal and collective loss and respond by resisting or adapting to colonization. Chapter three examines Erna Brodber's Myal and the impact of the manichean colonial ideology on a Jamaican woman who is literally half-black and half-white. Chapter four addresses Julia O'Faolain's No Country for Young Men, a novel about two women, one who lived through the early twentieth century movement for Irish independence and the other who is her great niece, that have both been silenced and sexually controlled by colonialism and Irish Catholicism. The fifth and final chapter examines Lucha Corpi's Delia's Song about a young Chicana activist who has suffered losses on several levels and recovers by writing an autobiographical novel that weaves the personal and political issues of her life. All four novels are concerned with the liminal states of consciousness in these women characters and their efforts to both find love and tell their stories, thus counteracting the colonizer's version of history.
