The Solo Piano Works of Alfredo Casella: A Comparative Analysis of His Diverse Styles

Davidson, Donna Ruth 08 1900 (has links)
The compositions to be considered in this study have been divided into three periods, corresponding with certain times in the life of Alfredo Casella. There is enough consistency of style in the compositions of each period to justify this division. The first period, characterized by lyricism and virtuosity, includes the works written in Paris after Casella left the Paris Conservatory. The second period, with its chromaticism and dissonance, comprises his output during the first years after his return to Italy. The third period begins with the close of World War I. In this period Casella returns to a classic style which is firmly embedded in an extended tonal system. The compositions of this period combine various ideas and styles gathered through the years and blend them into works marked by maturity, sincerity, and originality.

Take up your lute : A discussion on the interpretation and performance of Rebecca Clarke’s Viola Sonata – What interpretative strategies can be employed to effectively navigate the intricate nuances and emotive depth encapsulated in Rebecca Clarke’s Viola Sonata?

Halonen, Isela January 2024 (has links)
This thesis serves to provide insight into the interpretation and performance of Rebecca Clarke’s Sonata for Viola and Piano (1919). To provide context to the analysis and interpretation, the life and work of Rebecca Clarke (1886-1979) is described. The viola sonata is analysed in terms of harmony, colours and technical elements for the purpose of aiding the interpretation and performance. The sonata is also cross referenced with other works by the same composer, to further pinpoint the stylistic elements and their importance for the result. From the analysis it is concluded that the common elements in Clarke’s music and in the sonata in particular, include modality, harmonic ambiguity, polytonality and a range of instrumental techniques. The meticulous notation and the overall instrumental ergonomics of the piece shows both that Clarke had a clear vision for her music, and that she knew the nature of both the viola and the piano well. In conclusion, I argue that in order to present a captivating performance of the piece, great care must be taken to the distinction and sensitivity of these elements in particular. / <p>R. / In the second half of the twentieth century, especially in the 1960s and 1970s, artists and intellectuals intensify argued about the relationship between the poetic (creative) performance of the artist and his influence on the political and ideological social field. In this context, the English composer Cornelius Cardew (1936 - 1981) stood out for developing a compelling, critical and self-critical compositional and theoretical body of work about the musical avant-garde and its ideological dimension. He transited between two of the most influential aesthetic orientations of the second half of the twentieth century, avant-garde music and politically engaged music, both fundamental in the construction of reading about the relationship between the composer and western capitalist society. Throughout the 1960s, Cardew devoted himself in the creation and dissemination of works directly influenced by the experimental American school. He composed works that worked with randomness, improvisation (The Great Learning, Schooltime Compositions, etc.) and the graphic notation – among these, Treatise (1963-7) stands out. In 1969, still attached to the random approach and ritualistic directives of the American school, the composer founded the experimental orchestra Scratch Orchestra (1969-74). Nevertheless, influenced by the research work done in conjunction with the orchestra (strictly related to the theoretical studies group called the Ideological Group), in the years following the closing of the group's activities, Cardew engaged in the use of music as a tool in the awareness of the class struggle. Guided by the Marxist-Leninist line of thought, his theoretical and musical production of the 1970s is marked by a strong revolutionary engagement, which culminates in the publication of Stockhausen Serves Imperialism and other articles (1974). In his later years of life, the composer revisits the traditional notation and composes pieces for piano, songs and choral music that, if compared to his previous production, configure themselves as another musical language, operating under a hybrid reading key and diametrically opposed to the experimental vanguard. Marked by allusions and direct quotations to the revolutionary, erudite and popular musical repertoire, the piano pieces of the 1970s indicate a concern with the intelligibility of musical discourse and aim for a semantic clarity that is consubstantial with the author's political impetus. In this sense, the proposed project started from the need to better understand and reflect on the production of Cornelius Cardew as a composer who personified radical contradictions in musical practice, in the professional and political performance of his time. The interest in researching and collecting data on these two phases of Cardew lies in his drastic change in ideological orientation – hence logically understandable from the directions of his trajectory. As theoretical foundation, this study uses a bibliography that includes some different sources of analysis of the object in question. In turn, grouped into four different theoretical lines; texts written by the composer himself, the application of this theoretical body to the analysis of Cardew's music, the Marxist ideology applied to the arts (especially to erudite music) and finally a set of authors who also deal with the relationship between language and music in the 20th century. / FAPESP: 2016/05113-6

Analyse et interprétation des six dernières sonates pour piano d’Alexandre Scriabine / Analysis and performance of the six last sonatas by Alexander Scriabin

Dejos, Virginie 06 October 2014 (has links)
The following thesis focuses on the six final piano sonatas by Alexander Scriabin from the point of view of pianistic interpretation. The first part reconstitutes Scriabin’s unique musical and image-oriented universe from the basis of the listener’s perspective. The second part analyses the works from a musicological stand-point, taking into consideration indications on interpretation found in the scores. In order to more clearly identify the logic and structure of the musical language, which is marked by the usage of extended tonality, the analyses presented are inspired from Schenkerian traditions. The third part, directly linked to performance practises, explores the pianistic writing style as well as the timbral and temporal parameters, with an important place given to historical recordings.
