The Role Of Secularization Within The Turkish Nation-state Building Process

Sari, Ozgur 01 December 2004 (has links) (PDF)
The objective of this study is to analyze the role of secularization within the Turkish nation-state building process between the late 19th and the early 20th century / hereby an emphasis will also be on the relations between the state and religion. This study will consider the Religious Affairs Directory as the key institutional actor in this process. This institutional reflection of secularization will be studied as an interesting case of state controlled social change on and over religion in society. The state reproduces its legitimization and discourse over the Religious Affairs Directory, therefore some publications and khutbas of that institution in 2003 and 2004 will be analyzed. On the other hand, secularization was defined on 5th February 1937 in the 1924 Constitution with the law numbered 3115, as the separation of the state and religious affairs and the equal distance of the state&rsquo / s position towards all beliefs and believers. The contradiction between the state&rsquo / s definition and institutional application of secularization will be criticized. The first contradiction is the integration of state and religious affairs. The statist discourse legitimizes the state through the religious affairs and as it will be seen in the analyzed publications and khutbas of the Religious Affairs Directory, the statist and religious discourses overlap each other. Since this overlapping enables the integration of state and religious affairs through the Religious Affairs Directory as a constitutional institution, the applications of this institution contradict with the constitutional definition of Turkish secularization. The second feature of the Turkish secularization is that the state applies this practice over only one sect (Sunni-Hannifin) which is an obstacle for the state&rsquo / s position against all the religious beliefs. The legitimization of the state is being done through the Sunni-Hannifin denomination and by this way the state takes a side among the various beliefs. Lastly, as the results of the historical analysis of this study reveal, it will be understood that the practice of manipulating the religion under the hegemonic state ideology is a tradition inherited from the late Ottoman period. The Republic of Turkey, which realized secularization within a constitutional definition and through institutional transformations, has continued to integrate the state with religion.

A Critical Evaluation Of The Third Way And Its Reflections On Turkish Politics

Turk, Duygu 01 September 2005 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis aims to provide a critical evaluation of the Third Way and its reflections on Turkish politics. The Third Way emerged in the late 1990s with a claim to provide an alternative both to the old social democracy of welfare state period and to neo-liberalism. Based on a specific account of the radically changed world, the Third Way has maintained that the new conditions have rendered the old conceptualizations, as well as the old political positions, invalid. In this sense, this thesis argues that the re-definitions of the state and society relationship, the citizenship and the global order that the Third Way theory pursue have become the hegemonic notions of the current political context. It also claims that the Third Way can be considered as a product of the common attempts maintained by various approaches to complement the competitive market mechanism with social solidarity based on a socially inclusive strategy. The reflections of the Third Way on current Turkish political atmosphere are assessed in the thesis as further proofs of the hegemonic position that the Third Way occupies.

Premises And Assumptions Of The Ottoman State Tradition Paradigm: A Critical Evaluation Of Metin Heper

Kaya, Safiye Yelda 01 September 2005 (has links) (PDF)
In this thesis, Metin Heper&rsquo / s analysis of the Ottoman state and state-society relations is examined. Heper&rsquo / s analysis is evaluated as an exemplar of the Ottoman state tradition paradigm. The examination of Heper&rsquo / s studies is intended to shed light on the premises and assumptions of this paradigm. In particular, the study focuses on the way Heper characterizes Ottoman state-society relations in contradistinction to the prevalent pattern of state-society relations in Western social formations so as to demonstrate the assumptions Heper builds upon. Heper&rsquo / s account of the Ottoman state tradition is discussed on the basis of an examination of his comparative perspective. The conceptual framework Heper relies on is delineated and certain methodological problems of his approach are indicated.

A Model Testing

Asan, Gunalp Hamza 01 December 2005 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of the thesis is to test the validity of the statement &ldquo / Tourism income of Alanya is under a serious threat of decline&rdquo / raised by Alanya Chamber of Commerce and Industry, considering clustering approach. During the thesis a model is proposed in order to achieve this goal. In order to better identify Turkey and Alanya, an initial analysis aiming to gather information in the light of several economic indicators is carried out. This analysis also includes qualitative &amp / quantitative information collection about several aspects of Alanya such as population, transportation, health, and communication. Tourism is mentioned especially. Following, a model is built on Alanya in order to test the validity of the problem raised by Alanya Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The steps of the model includes investigation of the symptoms, SWOT analysis handling Alanya in terms of tourism, determination of the current tourism network structure in Alanya and the comparison of this structure with the network structure proposed in 2003 by METU IE System Design Senior Students. Main outcomes are interesting / the symptoms show that, Average Expenditure per Tourist (AEPT) value does not improve much, although number of tourists visiting Alanya has increased over the years. Mathematical analysis shows that, overall density of the current network structure of Alanya is only 0.0465 over 1.00. Its implication is that, the network is under-developed. But when compared with the study performed in 2003, it is possible to see a trend to self-develop. From 2003 to 2005, closeness and betweenness values, which evaluate the proximity and centrality of the members within the cluster, have increased. Also the diameter of the network evaluating number and variety of the linkages within the cluster has increased from 6 to 9. All these tell that, Alanya Chamber of Commerce and Industry may have a point to raise such a statement / however the region&rsquo / s self-development by the side networks from 2003 to 2005 creates value for clustering approach.

Avaliação de lesões pré-neoplásicas em cólon de ratos tratados com o corante comercial CI Disperse Blue 291 / Evaluation of preneoplastic lesions in colon of rats treated with the commercial disperse dye product CI Disperse Blue 291

Pinheiro, Fabriciano 18 September 2006 (has links)
The commercial disperse dye product CI Disperse Blue 291 , which contain the aminoazobenzene 2-[(2-bromo-4,6-dinitrophenyl)azo]-5-(diethylamino)-4-methoxyacetanilide (CAS registry no. 56548-64-2) is used for polyester fibers dyeing. It can be released in the aquatic environment through the discharge of industrial effluents. Humans can be exposed through the consumption of water and food contaminated with this product therefore its toxicological properties are important to be evaluated. This product showed elevated mutagenic activity with nitroreductase and Ο-acetyltransferase overproducing Salmonella strains. These enzymes are also expressed by human intestinal microflora, making intestines a possible target organ to the development of cancer after exposure to this product. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the commercial disperse dye product containing the CI Disperse Blue 291 on rat colon carcinogenesis, evaluated by the single cell gel assay (comet assay) and by aberrant crypt foci development. Results within different experimental periods showed the DB291 were not able to induce preneoplastic lesions in the colon of rats orally treated with 50mg/kg b.w., three times a week. The DB291 induced damages in the DNA of the rats colon mucosa, evaluated by the comet assay. These data indicate that the OB291 showed genotoxic activity in the colon mucosa cells. Considering these results, the mutagenic activity with Salmonella test and the recent data that the OB291 presents toxicity to human liver cells (HepG2), further long time carcinogenesis assays are needed to security evaluation of its carcinogenic potential, not only in colon, but also another organs like liver and kidney.

Globalization And The Political Economy Of Reform In Jordan (1989-2001)

Sutalan, Zeynep 01 December 2006 (has links) (PDF)
Economic reform packages became important for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) by the 1980s. Mainly as a result of the growing external debt, together with the regional stagnation that began after the second oil shock in the early 1980s, most of the MENA countries were affected by economic crisis. As a response to the economic crises, which also mostly resulted in regime legitimacy crises, many MENA countries initiated economic liberalization programs in cooperation with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank. In some of the Middle Eastern states, these economic liberalization processes were followed or accompanied by political liberalization policies. This thesis analyzes the political economy of reform in Jordan between 1989-2002 with reference to globalization. This thesis chooses Jordan as a case study since Jordan has been regarded as a successful case in implementing economic reforms envisaged in the Washington Consensus by the IMF and World Bank, and a country holding prospects for democracy. In this respect, this study seeks to find out why and how economic liberalization reforms were implemented in Jordan. In addition to that, this thesis displays how domestic and external factors affected both the rationale behind and the implementation of economic and political reforms in the country. The basic conclusion of this thesis is that regime survival is the main concern for the economic and political liberalization processes in Jordan.
