The construction of the gang in British Columbia : Mafioso, gangster, or thug? : an examination of the uniqueness of the BC gangster phenomenon

McConnell, Keiron January 2015 (has links)
This thesis explores the structure, demographics, and history of gangs in British Columbia (BC), Canada, through a social constructionist lens. The purpose of this research is for the reader to consider the current state of gangs in BC as inherently different from other places in the world, to assist in understanding why there may be misconceptions, and to promote the research and implementation of more appropriate context-specific interventions. Building on previous work conducted as a Vancouver Police officer of over 27 years, I participated in field observations with gang units in Toronto and Hobbema, Canada; Chicago and Los Angeles, USA; and London, England. I also examined gang typologies and definitions in academic literature as a segment of the historical context of gang research and highlight how these bodies of literature contribute to the social construction of gangs. A historical review of media-reported gang violence in BC from 1903 to 2012 demonstrates that gang violence is not a new phenomenon, and its history is an essential element in the constructed concept of the gang. As well, I conducted semi-structured interviews with participants who either police gangs, work with gangs, or were former gang members to get their perspectives on the issue. The research findings highlight that gangs in BC are distinct from other locations. Whereas traditional at-risk youth dominate gangs elsewhere, BC has a large number of youth involved in gangs who do not appear to possess the typical antecedents to gang involvement. Because of these differences, it is crucial that anti-gang initiatives and policies be adapted to the BC context to effectively reduce gang activity and ultimately eliminate gangs.

PDP-9 supervisory programs for the data-linkage to IBM 360/67

Ng, Nam January 1970 (has links)
PDP-9 programs are provided for the inter-computer linkage of the PDP-9 in the Department of Electrical Engineering to the IBM 360/67 in the Computing Centre of the University of British Columbia. Details of the communication procedure used are described. Automatic error detection and recovery is incorporated to ensure correct message transmissions. A program "TRSFER" has been written to operate the PDP-9 as a conversational terminal to the IBM 360/67. It also allows file transfers between the two computers. Details of the data-phone handler routine and operation of the program "TRSFER" are given in the Appendix. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Electrical and Computer Engineering, Department of / Graduate

Gilde-Rundbrief

Gilde Soziale Arbeit e.V. 13 April 2023 (has links)

Real Estate Market Efficiency. A Survey of Literature.

Maier, Gunther, Herath, Shanaka January 2009 (has links) (PDF)
In this paper, we discuss the question whether or not the real estate market is efficient. We define market efficiency and the efficient market hypothesis as it had been developed in the literature on financial markets. Then, we discuss the empirical evidence that exists concerning the efficiency or inefficiency of financial markets, usually seen as the reference markets as far as market efficiency is concerned. In a separate section, we turn to the real estate market. There, we define the real estate market and discuss various aspects that are decisive for the efficiency of that market. As it turns out, the result found in the literature is inconclusive. Majority of studies provide evidence supporting inefficiency of the real estate market while several studies maintain the notion of real estate market efficiency. / Series: SRE - Discussion Papers

The Surface Warfare community's 360-degree feedback pilot program : a preliminary analysis and evaluation plan

Williams, James M. 06 1900 (has links)
The system known as 360-degree feedback, also called multi-source or multi-rater feedback, is a development program that provides a recipient with feedback from supervisors, peers, and subordinates. There is currently no institutionalized, Navywide 360-degree feedback program for leadership development. Due to widespread civilian acceptance and to the success of the 360-degree program for the Navy's flag officers, the 2004 Surface Warfare Commanders Conference recommended a pilot program for 360-degree feedback be tested on a portion of the Surface Warfare Officer community. Results of the pilot program will be used to inform decisions on implementation of a Navy-wide 360-degree feedback program. The objectives of this thesis were to review the research evidence in the literature on the effectiveness and best practices of 360-degree programs and to identify general program evaluation techniques. The thesis then presents a conceptual analysis of the Navy pilot program and makes recommendations for modifications to the program based on comparisons with empirical research evidence and identified best practices of 360-degree programs. The thesis concludes by developing some guidelines and recommendations for a program evaluation plan that can be used to assess or revise the pilot program during and after its implementation.
