Theōria : the veneration of icons via the technoetic process

Karoussos, Ekaterini January 2016 (has links)
The Second Council of Nicaea, in 787 AD, marked the end of iconoclasm, while in 843 the Treaty of Verdun laid the foundations of Europe. With these agreements, a sustained period of imageless iconolatry was initiated. However, the veneration of icons was based on the absolute worship of matter and form, which replaced the prime spiritual concept of ‘image and likeness’. Millennia of research and thought resulted in imageless representations of natural phenomena. Pushing aside the topology of the image and its sign, the intelligent man, from the Age of Reason and onward, considered himself as an auto-authorised and teleological-free entity. To this end, he maximised the intelligibility of his space by designing an all-inclusive Cartesian cocoon in which to secure his mass and form. Yet, there he found his pet (Schrodinger’s Cat) to be both dead and alive, and the apple, still forbidden, had become a bouncing ball, serving as evidence of gravity. Hence, this intelligent design, by default, carries the residual fear of Manichaean and Augustinian devils, and is deemed to have converted to a de-sign crisis. Relying on literature sources, this dissertation examines two dominant models that govern human cognition and the production of knowledge. Despite remarkable scientific achievements which resulted, the aftermath of human progress was, among others, the maximisation of residual fear, to such an extent that voracious black holes devour all matter. Inaugurating the transhumanist period, the human becomes a Manchurian Candidate, still an upgraded ape and a victim of his own nature in the Anthropocene. In an attempt to overcome this de-sign crisis, the research presented in this thesis aims to address the necessity of the restoration of icons, as evidenced by Byzantine art and philosophy but neglected in the name of human supremacy and imperialism. This thesis elucidates Classical and Late Antiquity manuscripts in an effort to set a new ‘restore point’, endeavouring to launch the image in the current organosilicon substances; examples from Scripture narratives as well as from visual arts contribute to this effort. The proposed concluding scheme is the Module of Theōria, which reflects the major transhumanistic elements such as transmutation, interaction and fluidity. Theōria functions through noetic mechanisms, using ‘image and likeness’ as the prime carriers of knowledge. The anticipated outcome is to reveal a human investment in a pro-nature incorruptibility with the advent of Theōria in the field of Τechnoetics, where one can administer ‘image and likeness’ to gain capital liquidity.

[en] RESIDENTIAL PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEMS IN BRAZIL: A TECHNICAL-ECONOMIC ANALYSIS FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF PROSUMERS AND UTILITIES / [pt] SISTEMAS FOTOVOLTAICOS RESIDENCIAIS NO BRASIL: UMA ANÁLISE TÉCNICO-ECONÔMICA SOB A PERSPECTIVA DE PROSUMIDORES E DISTRIBUIDORAS

30 December 2021 (has links)
[en] Recent changes in the world s electrical mix are generally motivated by the search for cleaner energy sources and by the difficulty in building new centralized power plants. As a result, this stimulus changes not only the energy source technology, but also its location, which is now closer to consumer centers or even connected to the distribution network, such as Distributed Generation (DG). In Brazil, DG has a regulatory framework that allows its supporters, called prosumers, to play an active role in the distribution network, injecting and consuming electricity according to their own electrical balance. This behavior brings new challenges for distribution companies, and although some benefits of DG can be obtained for these companies, the loss of market and reduction of their fixed revenues can result in the transfer of structural costs, from prosumers to consumers without this type of installation. In this context, this work performs a technical-economic analysis for new residential projects of photovoltaic DG, the most significant portion of DG in Brazil. This analysis considers all proposed options for reviewing DG regulation by the regulatory body and addresses both the impact on return on investment by prosumers and the impact on revenues in all distribution companies in the country. For this, within the investor, three different economic factors are evaluated: LCOE, discounted payback and benefit-cost; within the scope of the distribution companies, the impact of the increase in DG on the company s revenue and on their electricity tariff are also evaluated, for which a market forecast will be made for the next ten years, considering the model based on Bass. The obtained results indicate that any of the options proposed by the regulatory agency will cause a reduction in the market adherent to the installation of the DG, which will consequently lead to a reduction in the revenue losses for distribution companies and less favorable scenarios for investment on the prosumer side.

Stylistic Comparisons and Innovations in Mozart's E-Flat Major Piano Concertos, K. 271 and K. 482

Blocker, Robert L. (Robert Lewis), 1946- 01 1900 (has links)
It is obvious that the Mozart Eb Major Concertos for Piano, K. 271 and K. 482, bear certain resemblances to each other. The primary conclusion of this study is that Mozart consciously looks to K. 271 as a guide for his later composition. Consider the fact that the "Jeunehomme" concerto establishes Mozart as a mature musician and wins him public acclaim. He seeks to regain public favor with the later work.

[pt] AVALIAÇÃO DE PROJETOS DE INVESTIMENTOS COM OPÇÕES REAIS: CÁLCULO DO VALOR DA OPÇÃO DE ESPERA DE UM SISTEMA FOTOVOLTAICO CONECTADO À REDE / [en] INVESTMENT PROJECT EVALUATION USING REAL OPTIONS: STANDBY OPTION VALUE CALCULATION OF A GRID-CONNECTED PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEM

MARCELO BRAGA CORREA DE MELLO 13 November 2015 (has links)
[en] In recent years, photovoltaics gained a very large space in the international arena and have become the world s third largest source of renewable energy, second only to hydropower and wind energy. In Brazil, despite all the favorable natural features in terms of solar availability and production of high quality silicon s possibilities, photovoltaics has an incipient participation in the energy matrix. The Agency National of Electric Energy (ANEEL), through the Resolution 482, sought to establish the general conditions and reduce existing regulatory barriers aimed at the expansion of this type of generation through the introduction of electric power compensation system (net metering). This study investigates the best time to invest in a project to establish a grid-connected photovoltaic system, from the perspective of the investor, applying the Theory of Real Options (TOR). The analysis was based on estimated cash flow throughout the life of the generating system and the project value was calculated considering that the investor could deploy it immediately or have the option of waiting for a more appropriate time. Traditional methods of investment appraisal as the Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR) and payback were used and real option theory (TOR) as well. From the analysis done in this study, it was concluded that, given the specific conditions of the proposed project, the best option would be held immediately the grid-connected photovoltaic system.

Luigi Boccherini's Cello Concerto in B-Flat Major, G.482: Creating a Performance Edition through a Critical Study of the 'Original' Version and Friedrich Grützmacher's Edition

Cho, Hyun Mi 08 1900 (has links)
The Cello Concerto in B-flat major, G.482, by Italian composer Luigi Boccherini (1743-1805), is the composer's most beloved work for the instrument, as well as one of the most performed pieces in the Classical concerto repertoire. Historically, cellists performing this work have used an edition prepared by German cellist Friedrich Grützmacher (1832-1903). However, an 'original' version that was discovered in 1949 is significantly different from that of Grützmacher. A comparison of both editions has revealed that Grützmacher in fact made considerable modifications to Boccherini's 'original.' Along with the issue of having two editions, cellists that have played the 'original' edition have noted that there are certain practical and interpretative matters that are not favorable to the cellist, particularly in terms of the way the music is notated and how it lacks many details. This dissertation provides clarity to these issues by undertaking a comprehensive analysis of both editions in order to make cellists become aware of the differences between both editions by comparing musical elements from a performance practice viewpoint. In addition, I discuss relevant issues that are present in the 'original' version, ultimately providing an alternative performance edition to this score that is based on historically informed performance (HIP) practices. Finally, I hope to draw attention on how a performance edition like this can be useful as a rare critical source to one of the major works from the eighteenth-century cello repertoire.
