Cobos Delgado, Ismael 19 July 2011 (has links)
The objectives of this thesis are the layout of a model for the calculation of the NOx emissions from the ships during the port operations, the development of a tool to carry out the mentioned calculation, the validation of the method applied and also the validation of the software designed jointly by the General Directorate of the Merchant Marine (this researcher has represented this organization) and the University of Vigo. So, bearing in mind the above paragraph, it is firstly applied an analytic method to calculate the NOx from the marine diesel engines. This methodology is applied to the calculation of the emissions generated in a model port by a specific type of ship. In this stage all the containerships that called at Barcelona in 2009 have been selected. The methodology distinguishes and analyses in depth the different operative stages that take place during the port period and it has initially been completely developed in two containerships with the aim of enlightening the method, afterwards the calculation has been extended to the rest of the ships indicated in the above paragraph by means of a worksheet that incorporates all the details applied in the two model ships. Later on a calculation as weighted emissions is carried out in the same model ships above indicated according with the test cycles defined in the NOx Technical Code. This stage of the thesis can be justified due to the fact that for validating the analytic method used in the paper, it is necessary a normalized base to compare the results, so the results obtained as total weighted emissions by using the test cycles of the mentioned regulation have been required and used. This calculation is firstly developed by the method defined in the thesis and secondly by means of the simulation software indicated in the first paragraph. After getting the weighted emissions results, queries and searches have taken place to obtain the values declared by the engines makers of the model ships. These values are included in the thesis body and a comparative analysis of the different results is made in the conclusions section. The analytic method referred to at the beginning of this summary is supported by the use of different variables. Firstly the called emission factors (EF) have to be fixed. They are defined for the different types of engines and for each pollutant. The EF¿s mainly depend on different parameters that are detailed in the thesis. The acquisition of the EF¿s is done empirically, mainly by the engines makers and the Recognized Organizations responsible for the pre-certification survey. In this case, reference values for different engines classified by type and nominal speed were obtained through the professor James J. Corbett from the University of Delaware. In the thesis, they have been extrapolated and approximated to polynomial functions to cover the engine working range required in this paper. Later on, bearing in mind the typology of propulsion and generating plants of the ships studied, these plants have been classified in the different curves previously designed to get the most accurate results. The specific fuel oil consumption (SFOC) is other main variable of the method developed in the thesis. To estimate the SFOC¿s of the ships engines, a division based in reference engines has been carried out and after that the ships engines have been classified in its corresponding division. The reference engines SFOC¿s have been supplied by the manufacturers themselves, which only provide the values corresponding to the common working loads. Afterwards, they have been extrapolated and approximated to polynomial functions for the complete range required by the operative conditions at port. Once the emission factors and the specific fuel oil consumptions are known and after estimating the load ranges of the main and generating plants and the timing taken by each operative phase, the NOx emissions for all the containerships of the thesis are obtained.

Variational multiscale stabilization of finite and spectral elements for dry and moist atmospheric problems

Marras, Simone 10 December 2012 (has links)
In this thesis the finite and spectral element methods (FEM and SEM, respectively) applied to problems in atmospheric simulations are explored through the common thread of Variational Multiscale Stabilization (VMS). This effort is justified by three main reasons. (i) the recognized need for new solvers that can efficiently execute on massively parallel architectures ¿a spreading framework in most fields of computational physics in which numerical weather prediction (NWP) occupies a prominent position. Element-based methods (e.g. FEM, SEM, discontinuous Galerkin) have important advantages in parallel code development; (ii) the inherent flexibility of these methods with respect to the geometry of the grid makes them a great candidate for dynamically adaptive atmospheric codes; and (iii) the localized diffusion provided by VMS represents an improvement in the accurate solution of multi-physics problems where artificial diffusion may fail. Its application to atmospheric simulations is a novel approach within a field of research that is still open. First, FEM and VMS are described and derived for the solution of stratified low Mach number flows in the context of dry atmospheric dynamics. The validity of the method to simulate stratified flows is assessed using standard two- and three-dimensional benchmarks accepted by NWP practitioners. The problems include thermal and gravity driven simulations. It will be shown that stability is retained in the regimes of interest and a numerical comparison against results from the the literature will be discussed. Second, the ability of VMS to stabilize the FEM solution of advection-dominated problems (i.e. Euler and transport equations) is taken further by the implementation of VMS as a stabilizing tool for high-order spectral elements with advection-diffusion problems. To the author¿s knowledge, this is an original contribution to the literature of high order spectral elements involved with transport in the atmosphere. The problem of monotonicity-preserving high order methods is addressed by combining VMS-stabilized SEM with a discontinuity capturing technique. This is an alternative to classical filters to treat the Gibbs oscillations that characterize high-order schemes. To conclude, a microphysics scheme is implemented within the finite element Euler solver, as a first step toward realistic atmospheric simulations. Kessler microphysics is used to simulate the formation of warm, precipitating clouds. This last part combines the solution of the Euler equations for stratified flows with the solution of a system of transport equations for three classes of water: water vapor, cloud water, and rain. The method is verified using idealized two- and three-dimensional storm simulations.

Multi-risk assessment and users' perception: a futher step towards ecosystem-based beach management

Lozoya Azcárate, Juan Pablo 29 October 2012 (has links)
This thesis deals with the need to move towards a holistic, truly integrated and ecosystem-based beach management that allows a sustainable use of these systems within the socio-ecological paradigm. However, the scarcity of frameworks for such management has been identified as a major constraint. The goal of this thesis was to apply and develop a set of methodologies based on the introduction of the Ecosystem Approach principles to beach management. These tools would be part of the Ecosystem Based Management System (EMBS), a novel formal system of public good management developed for coastal and marine environments. The study was conducted along the Costa Brava, a coastal area highly affected by tourism that alternates urban and natural beaches. The work starts providing a brief description of major paradigms of environmental management, with special emphasis on beach management. It also discusses the situation in Spain and its differences with main European policies in this area. Results confirm the need of an integrated and holistic beach management based on "sources" and not only on "resources", and the urgency of developing tools that could be really implemented. The main contribution of this thesis is a methodological framework based on multi-hazards risk assessment, which allows managers to identify and prioritize the main hazards potentially disturbing the beach and affecting existing ecosystem services. Thus managers could adapt their strategies according to their priorities, visions and resources. This methodology was validated in S¿Abanell beach, where 7 hazards and 6 ecosystem services were identified. In this thesis, beaches have been analyzed as socio-ecological systems, emphasizing the social dimension of the system that is not always considered. In this dissertation the users¿ perceptions have been analyzed as a feedback of management measures, comparing them in two antagonistic settings: an urban (S¿Abanell) and a natural-protected beach (St Pere Pescador). Learning from previous measures, this feedback should improve the setting of management according to the characteristics of each beach, increasing its adaptability and avoiding its homogenisation. Natural attributes were a priority in the protected setting, while services were highlighted in the urban one. But significant differences were not as important as would be assumed a priori. This homogenization in users¿ perceptions could be due to the scarce information-education provided to users on the protected beach, to the management that not really emphasizes the natural attributes of this beach, and to the strong influence of the surroundings with a long tradition of mass tourism. Achieve an effective implementation of integrated management has been also cited as a critical need. In this sense, this study has addressed a key component by means of an institutional analysis, identifying responsible authorities and key officers in charge of beach management. For 8 beaches of the Costa Brava the assessment identified duplications and absences in the management of key processes underlying main beach functions. Likewise, it showed the great diversity and complexity of the current beach management structures of this zone. The results confirmed the prioritization of the recreational function of the beach, with beach management almost restricted to the summer season. Concerning management structures, even if the three major Spanish legal scales were clearly recognized, a myriad of layouts have been identified within Municipalities. Within the current model, different aspects of the same system are managed in isolation, by different authorities with different objectives. Hence, beach management is fragmented and based on responsibilities, hindering the eventual implementation of new management plans. Thus, this dissertation aims to contribute to the development of a pathway in order to achieve a holistic, truly integrated and ecosystem-based beach management model.

Marando, Graciela 15 March 2013 (has links)
Since 1982 Spanish legislation obliges all companies engaged in mining to carry out restoration work with the view to environmentally recuperate those lands affected by their activities. The present thesis has shown the applicability of sewage sludges that had been subjected to thermal drying or composting, as a source of organic matter (OM) and nutrients to restore mineral substrates (extraction and trituration residues) of areas dedicated to limestone quarrying activities in the open. In our work we used chemical and biochemical parameters (organic carbon: C; extractable oorganic carbon: EOC, microbial biomass carbon: MBC; total carbohydrates: TCH; water soluble carbohydrates: ECH; basal respiration; BR; ß-glucosidase activity: GLU, and ß-galactosidase activity: GAL) as soil quality indices or indicators of restoration success. The values obtained in these indicators were compared with those of Catalan soils with minimal anthropogenic disturbance. To facilitate the routine procedures of soil analysis, the effect of pre-treatment of the soil (air drying or air drying and rewetting) on biochemical parameters was evaluated. The studied properties were highly variable among soils but generally remained within the range of values published before for native soils under Mediterranean conditions. C, TCH, ECH, MBC and GLU were found to be suitable for reflecting the main differences among soil type and location. We evaluated the effects of three thermally dried sewage sludges on the before mentioned biological properties and on some physicochemical characteristics when these sludges were added to two types of debris (extraction soil and trituration soil) from a limestone quarry; the effects were compared with those of three composted sewage sludges. Lysimeters previously filled with debris-sludge mixtures and control soils were sampled immediately after preparation and after being left in the open for 13 months. Adding sewage sludge clearly improved the physicochemical and biological properties of the residual soils and the effect of the type of sludge was greater than that of the type of soil. The sludge effect was generally more durable over the trituration soil. Results observed in BMC and MR suggests the sludge did not cause major toxic effects on residual soils. Losses in organic matter after 13 months were lesser in soils amended with composted sludge. The sludge effect decreased the most in BR and EOC followed by MBC and ECH. The soil type effect was significant only in EOC, TCH and ECH. Root exudates and plant debris contributed to ß-glucosidase and ß-galactosidase activities in the treated soils. The sludge effect differed with the pre and post treatments of the sludges: thermal drying made the sludge organic matter more easily decomposable. The values of MBC and of ß-glucosidase and ß-galactosidase activities in air-dried soils had the same ranking as in field-moist soils, whereas air-drying plus rewetting led to a change in the ranking of both enzyme activities compared with field-moist samples. The evaluated biological indicators allowed us to assimilate restored soils to natural soils with similar climatic and lithological characteristics, namely carbonate soils with organic content of less than 3%, and pH above 8, which correspond to the most arid zone.

Study of methods for the improvement of the anaerobic digestion of lipids and long chain fatty acids

Affes Salah, Rim 14 May 2013 (has links)
Anaerobic digestion is a biochemical process that transforms diverse categories of biomass feedstock to renewable energy, in the form of methane, and contributes to resources conservation and greenhouse gases emission mitigation. Lipid-rich waste and wastewaters have a high energy potential, however efficient methane recovery with conventional anaerobic digestion technology is not easy to achieve because of a wide assortment of operational problems mainly related to the accumulation of long chain fatty acids (LCFA), products of lipids hydrolysis, in the system. The objective of the present dissertation is to test and to evaluate new methodologies and strategies to improve the anaerobic digestion of high-strength lipid waste. In a preliminary approach, the suitability and the attractiveness of high-strength lipid wastes and slaughterhouse wastes for biogas production was confirmed, suffice to control the applied organic load. The obtained results reinforced the existing knowledge describing the flotation and wash-out of substrate/biomass and the inhibition phenomena affecting the microbial population, as the main process drawbacks. The results of studies submitting anaerobic reactors to increasing concentrations of lipids/LCFA underlined the importance of the adsorption of LCFA onto the microbial cell membrane as limiting factor, guiding further research to found new technical approaches in order to control the biomass-LCFA adsorption dynamics. The use of inorganic adsorbents to capture LCFA prior to the anaerobic digestion process or the application of sequential low-energy ultrasonic pulses in order to control the adsorption-desorption kinetics were tested with interesting results. However, the effectiveness of these strategies was limited by the proportion of inorganic adsorbent/LCFA and the cumulative damaging effect of ultrasonic treatment over biomass, respectively. Further studies are thus required to optimize the efficiency and the applicability of these strategies. Efficient conversion of complex high-strength lipid waste to methane was proved to be possible in a novel reactor system configuration combining saponification pre-treatment and digested solids recirculation to the anaerobic digestion process, to increase solids retention time. A start-up step consisting on pulse-feeding cycles of the fatty waste prior to the semi-continuous process promoted an adapted microbial community for LCFA mineralization. The feasibility of this system configuration for solid slaughterhouse fatty waste was evidenced at lab scale reactors, reaching organic matter removal efficiencies higher than 90%. The comparison of this configuration with systems without saponification or without digested solids recirculation confirmed the synergistic effect of both strategies. The use of high throughput sequencing approach (454-pyrosequencing) to characterize the evolution of the biodiversity and the phylogenetic structure of the microbial community during the operation of the tested configurations concluded that a selection of a defined functional acidogenic population (ß-oxidizers) was induced by substrate pretreatment. Contrary, the solids recirculation resulted in an enrichment of the methanogenic biodiversity, mainly of hydrogenotrophic archaea. Based on the satisfactory results obtained with the strategies studied in the present dissertation, it is expected that lipid-rich waste valorization will be a real alternative to increase renewable energy production through anaerobic digestion process.

Lobera Serrano, Josep A. 28 May 2010 (has links)
The human being has always been in continuous interaction with its environment, an interaction that has not been exempt from tensions. Since ancient times, in several societies registers show awareness of the interdependence between human societies and their natural environment, which usually results in a pragmatic concern for preserving the environment on which they depend for their survival. At present, these interactions of human societies with their environment involve, for the first time, global change, persistent over time and extended in space. While in pre-industrial societies the environmental impact was primarily restricted to the local level, in industrial societies the consequences of pressure on the environment are growing exponentially and reaching global dimensions. The socio-environmental conflict is a central element in the interaction between societies and their environment, one of the main forces involved in the dynamic imbalance as befits socio-environmental system. The socio-environmental conflicts are manifested by tensions between different actors with mutually exclusive material and/or ideal interests in a social-environmental system, i.e. that these interests can not be taken simultaneously. These processes have a temporal development in the public domain and can be analyzed in terms of cycles or sets of cycles, with a beginning, a development and a closure, which can be partial or total. They relate to a dynamic opposition, controversy, dispute or protest between various actors. Due to the complexity of the socio-environmental system, the dynamics of the interests of one or more actors often enter into contradiction due to consequences that are unforeseen by the actors. Ideas about nature and man's position in the world have historically conditioned socio-environmental conflicts. In this sense, the worldview change introduced by the scientific movement of the fifteenth century has had a significant influence on the evolution of interactions between modern societies and their environment, conceptually separating man from nature, and the objective from the subjective. In the modern conception of the world, man can conquer nature for his welfare by means of reasoning, metond and calculating. At the same time, the genesis of the idea of progress has a profound religious background and motivation. Within the work of such influential authors as Francis Bacon a new link between the idea of progress and redemption is established. The enthusiasm of Western intellectuals in the modern Weltbildung calls for a transfer of the prescription of industrial logic to social problems. In the new world view, the problems of society no longer depend on their fidelity to the divine law, but rather on the effectiveness and efficiency of the industrialized social organization, Nature is viewed as an object to dominate and technocracy appears as the result of the implementation of the new techno-scientific logic of the social organization. Following Max Weber's argument we could say that the exponential increase of socio-environmental impacts noted during the last three centuries has been the result of actions «driven by the dynamics of interest» ―by a growing number of individuals―, targeted according to the modern image of the world ―favourable to domination of nature― and mediated by a technology with a growing capacity to transforming the environment. In the last three centuries, the idea of unlimited progress has had a considerable influence on the evolution of the prevailing socio-economic models and the evolution of technology. Currently, socio-economic systems are based on increasing consumption of materials and energy, and consumerism has been incorporated as an important reference in the daily lives of more citizens in more countries. The consequences of increased industrial production and consumption patterns from Fordism are at the root of most current socio-environmental conflicts. In recent decades, the notion of sustainability has been incorporated into the set of images our society has of the world and on its capabilities for meeting human needs. The notion of unsustainability, present in the literature from Malthus and Ricardo, is based on a future projection of the environmental impact of human activities at a specific time and on the impossibility in keeping it as such indefinitely. Sustainability is defined originally in the Brundtland Report as the characteristic of a development that «meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs». By analyzing its current meaning, we note that the notion of sustainability has lost a precise definition since the publication of the Brundtland report and it has become a plastic word, with over three hundred different definitions. However, we understand sustainability to be a utopian ideal that sets a direction in which to move towards, just as necessary as the ideals of democracy and justice are within the current socio-environmental context. Thus, sustainability is not a stage, but, like democracy or justice, is both a horizon and a daily practice oriented to a positive transformation of socio-environmental, with the aim of ensuring the satisfaction of the needs of present and future generations. Sustainability, then, is a concept built around the complex search for the satisfaction of human needs in a dynamic ecological context, ie a solution to the satisfaction of needs that can be durable over time. As industrialization has progressed, an increase in concern for the safety of new industrial conditions and their effects on health has been witnessed in different regions of the world. The predominant Weltbildung in industrial society considers that its risks are manageable and its consequences are spatially and socially delimited. This worldview is questioned from the contradictions posed by unanticipated side effects of techno-scientific applications, which sometimes become a source of new risks. In recent decades, the emergence of a risk culture or risk society has been observed. This is closely linked to the development of contemporary technoscience and to the inadequate management of its environmental and social risks. Also, the modern idea of scientific expert is questioned when the uncertainty and complexity of the interactions between techno-science, society and environment are evidenced. The current characteristics of socio-environmental conflicts lead to a rethinking of the role of citizenry in the transformation of these conflicts. In the current socio-environmental conflicts that involve a high level of complexity and uncertainty and a plurality of legitimate perspectives, public participation often becomes a technical and a political need for identifying solutions and for implementing them. A «passive» component of participation is considered when the actions of citizens are limited to accommodating to a behaviour change planned by institutions. On the other hand, there are processes that are essential for the development of sustainability and need to incorporate active and creative participation, such as decision making, active information seeking, developing teaching materials, etc. In the «active» dimension of participation for sustainability, or active sustainability, we have identified six types of processes: information, communication, consultation, deliberation, decision making and creative action. The formal integration of citizenry in socio-environmental conflict transformation requires a progressive change in the local participatory culture, both from the side of institutions as well as citizenry. It often occurs that in cases of socio-environmental crisis or acute conflict, participatory processes must be developed urgently. When the culture of public participation (from the institutional and/or the citizenry side) is weak or undeveloped, the resolution of the crisis will be hardly successful and sustainable over time. We identify three aspects that are needed in order to develop different synergistic satisfiers for participation: 1) the skills needed for active participation, 2) an adequate legal framework allowing participation, and 3) the presence of catalysts of participation in their different forms (information, communication, consultation, deliberation, decision making and creative action). During this research we observed that the use of new ICTs can play an important role to broaden the range of information, communication, consultation, deliberation, decision making and creative action processes that can be applied to the positive transformation of socio-environmental conflicts. Digital literacy, just as with traditional literacy, reproduces or transforms a world view and is a fertile area for capacity development of active sustainability. We note that the methodology consolidated over the reflection-action iterations is significant, dialogical and interconnected: - Relationship between object and context: Interconnected. The methodology relates the object of learning (tools) to its context, with what might be called technological ecosystem: the impacts of the context object on local / global, the implications of technology on neighbourhood issues and possible solutions, its different uses and opportunities / threats offer meaningful contexts in which technology has evolved and where it is used, and so on. We note that linking the object of study, the "text" digital, in context, highlighting the links that digital technology has with society, with the current reality (both local and global) provides digital literacy and capacity building of active sustainability. In this way, learning fosters the development of knowledge and a perspective that makes visible the complex interrelationships among the different social and technological aspects, and is indispensable for the generation of a new context of meaning to take place in the construction of the sustainability from active participation. - The relationship between the object and subject: Significant. The methodology fosters motivation and learning acquisition, construction of significant knowledge of the subject of learning. The elements and learning vocabular universe develop from the interests and prior knowledge of the subject. Each participant draws the path of their learning, develops their autonomy in the process, and decides what to learn from their initial expectations and new interests that appear throughout the process. The autonomy and the significance that participants integrate facilitate "reading" of the technology within the interweaving of culture, and from there, guide their actions "writing", processing, use of new knowledge. - The relationship between subjects: Dialogical. The methodology creates spaces argumentative developing communication skills for participation and horizontal dialogue and increased confidence in the processes of participation in the classroom (as part of learning), but also outside the classroom (as a means of improving neighbourhood issues / municipality). It encourages learning from knowledge sharing, discussion, debate about the social / cultural life of technology, about its implications for the culture of the participants and their uses for communication / discussion on aspects of area of concern to participants. In our society, socio-environmental conflicts are increasingly complex and introduce non-traditional elements that require public participation. Education, reproducing/creating new meanings, can facilitate the understanding of sustainability and capacity building of active sustainability and, thus, contribute to the positive transformation of socio-environmental conflicts. From a transdisciplinary vocation, this work is intended as a theoretical and practical contribution to a better understanding of sustainability and the current socio-environmental conflicts, as well as to highlight the role of citizen participation and the processes of teaching-learning in their transformation. In the course of the work, a large number of dimensions have been linked and several limitations of the research have been noted that may offer prospects in the subsequent research.

Monterotti, Chiara 04 March 2013 (has links)
This research project is the result of an ¡nterest in methods that help measure the environmental sustainability of construction works and in particular tools that assess a building's environmental sustainability, considering that "what is not measured cannot be improved", William Thomson. In the current building industry sector, based on the systematic use of materials in open cycles, these tools should play an important role as they recognise the environmental characteristics of buildings through numerical assessments. They can serve 10 increase the efficiency of the use of resources in building works and consequently promote a reduction of their impact. Moreover, they may move the world of construction 10wards the implementation of new technical models that are in greater harmony with the biosphere. After an initial analysis of the various types of measurement tools, a selection of the most important options is presented. Subsequently. information on the theory of indicator systems is provided. This information has been the basis for developing an overall theoretical framework for the analysis of these tools, based on criteria and sub-criteria, organised in two parts: a. The first part intends to discover the principies of sustainability upon which the existing tools are based. Subsequently, these principies are compared to the need to close material cycles used in technical processes to achieve habilability. b. The second part aims to discover how efficiently these tools are in guiding their users towards sustainable behaviour and how they contribute to moving the sector in this direction. The paper states that for a tool to be efficient it needs possess various characteristics grouped into five areas with related objectives , termed "criteria", which are as follows: 1. Modelling: this criteria specifies that the tool must include all the key areas for the sustainability of a building, but with the minimum number of indicators required . 2. Representativeness of the valuation: this criteria includes the features required for a tool to be able to offer a correct assessment that is representative of the level of sustainability for the building under assessment. 3. Use and economic viability: this criteria requires that these tools, with the purpose of dissemination and good reception, are economically accessible and easy to undersland. 4. Clarity about the the of user, scope and objectives: this criteria requires that the structure and content of the tool are adjusted to the level of knowledge of the user; to the local climate; to the geographical. social and technological context where the building is located. 5. Ability to guide the improvement of the environmental quality of the building: this criteria emphasises the potential of the tools as means of support in project development. These criteria have been applied to analyse the following widely used tools : CASBEE. GBTOOL.ITACA and LEED with the intention of checking the capacity of the proposed analysis system to detect the strengths and weaknesses of the above tools. This investigation process has given rise to a number of proposals on the structure and content of the above tools in the form of recommendations, aimed primarily at the technicians in charge of drafting them, to assist them in the task of guiding the building sector toward practices that close material cycles. It has been possíble to test these criteria thanks to the collaboration with GBCe Spain in the envisioning of the VERDE tool. They were specifically applied in the development of the Palma Beach tool. within the Suslainable Rehabililation for Building in the Palma de Mallorca 8each Programme.

Hernández Sánchez, Juan Manuel 19 February 2013 (has links)
This methodology is aimed at assessing the environmental impact of buildings, their economic cost and social impact, taking into account the entire life cycle in a systematic, flexible, simple, holistic manner and focused on the comparison of results. Each building has its own characteristics and the application of the life-cycle assessment (LCA) is different in each case. But buildings also have common characteristics, such as materials, construction processes, facilities, building materials and building use. These similarities should enable straightforward comparison between buildings, especially those that are of the same construction type. However, the interpretation, objective, scope and system limits of a life-cycle assessment mean that the results are barely comparable, even if the buildings being compared are similar. The LCA standard methodology is suitable for all products, processes and services. However, it is very open and requires many iterations. The proposed method adjusts the LCA standard methodology for its exclusive use in buildings, avoiding repetition, adapting to all ways of acting from methodology users, and working for all different buildings and areas of sustainability. The methodology consists of five phases. In the first phase the system and the general characteristics of the study are defined. In the second phase the necessary documentation to be used in the rest of the methodology is gathered. In the third phase the information found in the documentation is processed and the inventory data is carried out. In the fourth phase, using the inventory data, the required calculations and analysis of the life cycle are carried out. Finally in the fifth and final phase the results are presented. Three adaptations to the methodology for specific uses have also been made. The first adaptation consists in analysis of alternatives, in which by changing a parameter or combination of parameters, the best alternative for a certain purpose is revealed. The second adjustment consists in refurbishment, in which the building has not yet reached the end of its useful life and it is desired to reduce energy consumption and improve the welfare and comfort of the occupants. The last adjustment consists in dwelling stock, groups of buildings that make up a neighbourhood, district, city, region, country or group of countries. The application of the methodology to a case study confirms that the methodology is suitable for use and that the results are comparable to those using the LCA standard methodology. A life-cycle assessment adapted to the domain of the buildings is as simple and straightforward as a general one, obtaining the same results. Using this methodology a dispersion in the way of processing the data is avoided. The spread of relevant data for the buildings allows for greater ease in comparing results between different studies that apply this methodology. The methodology is useful to gather and organize information about buildings, allowing for the preparation of a summary, with the intention to communicate. It also assists in the design process, highlighting the key issues and what are their relative importance. It is therefore significantly useful for actors who make decisions in the design stage and develop strategies tailored to the objectives. This methodology improves each of the phases of the building process and the whole building, and it increases competitiveness, social satisfaction and ensures sustainability.

Biogeochemical controls of the transport and cycling of persistent organic pollutants in the polar oceans

Galbán Malagón, Cristóbal 20 September 2013 (has links)
Humanity is currently using more than 200000 synthetic organic compounds in many industrial, agricultural and domestic applications. Many of these chemicals reach the environment and have a harmful effect on ecosystems and humans. Among them, the group of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) comprises several families of compounds that have physical and chemical properties that give them the ability to be distributed and impact globally (semivolatility, high persistence and bioaccumulation capacity due to their hydrophobicity). In the present thesis, the coupling of atmospheric transport and biogeochemical cycles in the Arctic and Southern Ocean has been studied for Hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs). Three oceanographic cruises were conducted, one in the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean (2007) and two in the Southern Ocean surrounding the Antarctic Peninsula (2008 and 2009). During these campaigns, air (gas and particulate), water (dissolved and particulate) and biota (phytoplankton) were sampled simultaneously allowing to report a complete picture of POPs cycling in polar areas. In the case of the Southern Ocean, the largest data set available for PCBs, HCH and HCB has been generated. The atmospheric and seawater concentrations were low, among the lowest reported for the Polar Oceans, and in the case of the Southern Ocean there is a clear historical trend of decreasing concentrations, consistent with reduced emissions in source regions. Long range atmospheric transport was identified as the main POPs input to polar ecosystems agreeing with previous works. However, it has been found that secondary local sources from soil and snow influences strongly the atmospheric concentrations overland in the Antarctic region, and over the adjacent Southern ocean in the case of HCHs. Atmospheric residence times calculated from the measurements were in agreement with the prediction from environmental fate models. The atmospheric residence times were longer for the less hydrophobic PCBs and shorter for the more hydrophobic, consistent with the role of the biological pump sequestering atmospheric PCBs. Once POPs reach the Polar regions the main route of entry of these compounds to surface waters is by atmospheric deposition, mainly by diffusive exchange between the gas and dissolved phase with minor contributions from dry deposition of aerosol bound POPs. Estimated bioconcentration factors revealed that concentration of POPs in phytoplankton were correlated with the chemical hydrophobicity, but some discrepancies with model predictions were observed. The biological and degradative pumps are identified as the two main processes that control the fate and occurrence of POPs in the surface water column, and also are able to modulate the atmospheric transport of POPs to remote areas. POPs such HCHs are prone to be efficiently degraded by bacterial communities in surface waters, depleting the seawater concentrations and increasing the diffusive air-water exchange to the Arctic and Southern Ocean. Conversely, the biological pump decreases the dissolved phase concentrations of the more hydrophobic PCB congeners increasing the air to water fugacity gradients and enhancing the diffusive air-water exchange fluxes. This is the first time that the influence of the biological pump on POP cycling is demonstrated for Oceanic waters. Finally, HCB was close to air-water equilibrium showing that neither the biological and degradative pumps are efficient sequestration processes for the highly persistent and mid-hydrophobic compounds. Overall, the results show clearly that biogeochemical processes occurring in the water column affect the atmospheric deposition and long range transport of POPs to remote regions. The magnitude of these processes may show a clear seasonality and are suitable to be perturbed under the current scenario of climate change.
