This research is the development of a series of genetic algorithms (GAs) applied to different scales of architecture. The aim is to develop a series of applied GAs to optimize the architecture and propose designs. Darwin's natural selection, suggests that the environment can encourage or discourage the reproduction of organisms depending on their characteristics. The descendants of the organisms inherit some of their characteristics and properties that determine their adaptation to the environment. Therefore, the less organisms fit have fewer options to survive than the most. Iterate this process is what is known as evolution of species. Between 1950 and 1960 a number of scientists began to study independently the evolution of species, with the idea that could be used as an optimization and search tool. The process involves randomly creating a population of candidates for a problem. Then each individual is evaluated and order depending on its outcome. The fittest (best rated) will crossover more options than less. Therefore its DNA (digital) will spread more quickly through the population. Because of this, the population average result improves with each generation of GA. Genetic algorithms were invented by John Holland around 1960 and 1970. The objective was to study the natural phenomenon of adaptation and develop ways in which these natural adaptive mechanisms can be imported into computer systems.

The technical and economic suitability of using fibers has been proved in reinforced concrete pipes. However, the use of fibers in concrete pipe is slow, on the one hand due to the inertia to change in the construction field, and on the other hand due to the lack of a standardized, agile and reliable design method that accounts for the structural contribution of fibers. In this sense, this Doctoral Thesis aims to cover these aspects with regard to reinforced concrete pipes. For this purpose, a design method allows considering the strength contribution of the fibers in concrete pipes is proposed. Furthermore, in order to favour the spread of the results both to the scientific and the industrial community, the document of the Doctoral Thesis is presented as a compendium of articles accepted and / or in review status in scientific journals. Each of these articles presents the results of each of the lines of work and whose union has helped to achieve the main objective of this Doctoral Thesis. Firstly, the numerical tool Analysis of Evolutionary Sections (AES) developed to deal with the analysis of the strength response of reinforced concrete sections is presented. The tool is general and can simulate different reinforcement configurations (passive and/or active reinforcement with the possibility of incorporating fibers) and even the evolutionary construction of the section taking into account the rheological behaviour of materials. The model AES was subsequently used as a calculation tool of sections with the aim of addressing parametric studies as well as a subroutine into the other two models developed in the scope of this Doctoral Thesis. The second line of work focuses on the study of conventional reinforced concrete pipes. To address their optimal design the model Análisis de Tubos de Hormigón (ATH) has been developed. The practical interest of the model lies in the possibility of obtaining the optimal amount of reinforcement which meets the requirements in terms of bearing capacity specified in project. These reinforcements obtained from the models are, in most of the cases, inferior to the amounts in the design tables that are used traditionally. With the purpose of confirming the suitability of the ATH, an experimental campaign with tubes of 2800 mm of diameter has been carried out. By using the model, reductions up to 30% of the reinforcement have been obtained for pipes with the aforementioned diameter, while the differences in the bearing capacity do not exceed 10% when compared to the results of the three bearing edge test performed in the laboratory. The third and final line of work deepens into the technical and industrial side of the fiber reinforced concrete pipes. On the one hand, an extensive experimental campaign (some of it developed at the Universidade de São Paulo) is conducted, addressing issues associated with fiber reinforced concrete as well as others regarding the three edges test and the structural response of tubes of different diameters and with different amounts of fibers. On the other hand, the model for the Analysis of Pipes (MAP) was developed simultaneously for simulating the structural response of the fiber reinforced concrete pipes. The results of the bearing capacity of tubes up to 1000 mm of diameter tested have been compared with simulations performed with the MAP model, obtaining excellent correlations and not exceeding, in any case, the 5.5% relative error between the design loads. In view of the good results, it can be concluded that the design methodology herein presented, based on the use of the MAP model, ensures results that fit real behaviour and that the amounts of reinforcement provided are very close to the optimum necessary to meet the strength requirements established in each case.

Sica Palermo, Humberto Nicolás 22 November 2012 (has links)
Como afirmaba el propio Bunshaft, “nosotros hemos tomado la prefabricación y hemos hecho de ella un beneficio de proyecto” / The works of the architect Gordon Bunshaft, developed while working for the multinational architectural firm S.O.M. - Skidmore, Owens & Merrill - show a number of concrete and abstract elements that belie its modernity and define the field in which the firm’s work achieved its maximum artistic expression. In the early fifties, the Lever House attracted fame and commissions, becoming one of the paradigms for the design of modern office buildings. However, the evolution of S.O.M.’s design and construction processes generated a wide variety of formal solutions during the 50s. Fundamental to this process, the employment structure of the firm were based on three basic aspects: modern architecture, American organizational methods and expertise and development of techniques and industrialized building materials. Towards the sixties, S.O.M. projects started to have more expressive and technically refined structures, enhancing formal attributes and gaining more functions than the usual. New York’s office, leaded by Gordon Bunshaft, was the first to introduce precast concrete units in the projects, promoting most of the future applications of the material. The practice of Bunshaft and his team targeted from the beginning to the exploitation of the material in structural frame systems, having as previous experiences those steel structural frames that eventually prove successful. Amid this context, and fundamentally based on the use of the material, buildings were generated with structural systems that practically determines the resulting form. The architect employed basically two types of structures in their projects with prefabricated concrete elements: perimetral structural screens - vertical structural components which were reflected in buildings as the John Hancock Company in New Orleans and the Lambert Bank in Brussels - and one-way slabs on continuous supports - horizontal structural components revealed in buildings as American Can Company in Greenwich, American Republic Company in Des Moines and the architect’s own house in East Hampton. The economy of means, the repetition of the adopted solutions, and the precision with which the construction was carried through generate the visual and formal consistency of both buildings and give them a very clear tectonic quality. Besides arising from precast concrete structural systems, tectonics in the work of the architect is also apparent through the design of the pieces, connections of elements and building finishes. As Bunshaft claimed, “we have taken prefabrication and made a design asset of it / As obras do arquiteto Gordon Bunshaft, desenvolvidas no período em que trabalhou na empresa S.O.M.

Vaquero Martínez, José M. 22 February 2013 (has links)
This interaction may cause undesirable changes in the concrete and turn it a source of microbiological contamination. Although in some cases, the presence of microorganisms in concrete may be beneficial. This investigation is focused just on the negative interactions. Its main objectives are two, first one, to make a selection of chemicals and evaluate their effectiveness against pathogenic to humans and / or their activity (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Aspergillus niger) or against the microorganisms growth that could cause concrete biodeterioration (Scenedesmus vacoulatus, and Thiobacillus thiooxidans, Stichococcus bacillaris). The second objetives is to develop a comprehensive methodology (laboratory tests and field trials) to evaluate the different chemicals effectiveness against different factors over time. The laboratory tests are divided in three phases, in which the antimicrobial efficiency of 15 different formulations (10 and 5 multi-component) containing 10 different active ingredients is evaluated. In the first phase the monocomponent products efficacy was assessed, evidencing that none of them reaches the required objectives and thus are discarded for the following reasons: key concrete properties were prejudiced (strength development, density and slump), chemical leaching and acceptable antimicrobial activity not reached. In the second phase multicomponent formulations were evaluated and when using PL-UV PL-H+M-2B excellent results were reached. This product presents a long lasting antimicrobial effect without compromising the rest of concrete performancesThese good results obtained with PL-UV PL-H+M-2B, were confirmed in real use conditions field trials conducted in the port of Barcelona, in which the algae appearance was delayed up to 16 weeks. Finally, in the third phase the BXT/I effectiveness against biogenic sulfuric acid (Thiobacillus thiooxidans metabolism) attack was evaluated. Firstly, impregnation tests were done and demonstrate, qualitatively, that BXT/I inhibits the T. thiooxidans growth. Subsecquently, sulfuric acid attack simulation tests were carried out, following the method described by Vincke (1999), showing that the use of formulated BXT/I reduced by more than 30% concrete mass loss due T. thiooxidans metabolism; hence, this treatment can be considered effective against this biodeterioration process. From the methodological point of view, this PhD proposes a new methodology to evaluate the antimicrobial chemicals efficacy by studying the chemical influence in concrete properties, its possible leaching, antimicrobial effectiveness (microbiological cultures in Petri plate) and its durability, both laboratory and field trials.

Amb les mans. Del pensament al fet? La maison Prouvé a Nancy

Tapias Monné, David 08 March 2013 (has links)
When analyzed solely from an architect's point of view, the maison Prouvé design and building process is full of contradictions and incoherencies. A new critical approach is needed. One that has its origin on Jean Prouvé's education as a ferronnier, the production conditions at his workshops and his passion for constant invention, which lead to a totally different scope of priorities than some of his collaborators in this project, who had studied architecture at the university. Prouve's inclusive mentality, and the synergy of his technical thought, helps these two ways of thinking and making come together in this house. In such moments of tension, void and synthesis between these two worlds, the maison Prouvé was thought, built and dwelt. This house is at the same time a project and an invention, a construction and an assembly, a house and a shelter.

Monterotti, Chiara 04 March 2013 (has links)
This research project is the result of an ¡nterest in methods that help measure the environmental sustainability of construction works and in particular tools that assess a building's environmental sustainability, considering that "what is not measured cannot be improved", William Thomson. In the current building industry sector, based on the systematic use of materials in open cycles, these tools should play an important role as they recognise the environmental characteristics of buildings through numerical assessments. They can serve 10 increase the efficiency of the use of resources in building works and consequently promote a reduction of their impact. Moreover, they may move the world of construction 10wards the implementation of new technical models that are in greater harmony with the biosphere. After an initial analysis of the various types of measurement tools, a selection of the most important options is presented. Subsequently. information on the theory of indicator systems is provided. This information has been the basis for developing an overall theoretical framework for the analysis of these tools, based on criteria and sub-criteria, organised in two parts: a. The first part intends to discover the principies of sustainability upon which the existing tools are based. Subsequently, these principies are compared to the need to close material cycles used in technical processes to achieve habilability. b. The second part aims to discover how efficiently these tools are in guiding their users towards sustainable behaviour and how they contribute to moving the sector in this direction. The paper states that for a tool to be efficient it needs possess various characteristics grouped into five areas with related objectives , termed "criteria", which are as follows: 1. Modelling: this criteria specifies that the tool must include all the key areas for the sustainability of a building, but with the minimum number of indicators required . 2. Representativeness of the valuation: this criteria includes the features required for a tool to be able to offer a correct assessment that is representative of the level of sustainability for the building under assessment. 3. Use and economic viability: this criteria requires that these tools, with the purpose of dissemination and good reception, are economically accessible and easy to undersland. 4. Clarity about the the of user, scope and objectives: this criteria requires that the structure and content of the tool are adjusted to the level of knowledge of the user; to the local climate; to the geographical. social and technological context where the building is located. 5. Ability to guide the improvement of the environmental quality of the building: this criteria emphasises the potential of the tools as means of support in project development. These criteria have been applied to analyse the following widely used tools : CASBEE. GBTOOL.ITACA and LEED with the intention of checking the capacity of the proposed analysis system to detect the strengths and weaknesses of the above tools. This investigation process has given rise to a number of proposals on the structure and content of the above tools in the form of recommendations, aimed primarily at the technicians in charge of drafting them, to assist them in the task of guiding the building sector toward practices that close material cycles. It has been possíble to test these criteria thanks to the collaboration with GBCe Spain in the envisioning of the VERDE tool. They were specifically applied in the development of the Palma Beach tool. within the Suslainable Rehabililation for Building in the Palma de Mallorca 8each Programme.

Numerical analysis of concrete-filled tubes with stiffening plates under large deformation axial loading

Albareda Valls, Albert 18 January 2013 (has links)
Concrete-filled tubes have been increasingly used these recent decades thanks to their improved structural behavior, especially under compression.Concrete filling in these sections improves ¡ts compressive strength thanks to lateral pressure coming from confinement effect provided by the steel tube. At elevated percentages of loading, concrete suffers an important volumetric expansion, which is clearly restricted by the tube. Therefore, the core is subjected to a severe lateral pressure that clearly enhances the compressive response of the concrete filling. This advantageous response under compression is accompanied by a significant ductility and energy absorption, owing to crushing of the cement paste of concrete. The core is subjected to asevere damage process, while mast part of the axial load is still resisted until advanced stages of deformation, thanks to be contained by the tube. These two properties let concrete-filled tubes to play an important role in the construction of really tall buildings in seismic areas. However, confinement effect on the core and the absorption of energy in these sections is clearly different between circular and square-shaped tubes. While in circulartubes, laleral pressure over the core is clearly uniform and constant, in square-shaped tubes, the deformability of the plates implies a notorious reduction of these two mechanical capabilities. This fact can be partially solved by means of introducing stiffening plates in the core. Thus, main purpose of this investigation is to analyze and describe the influence of introducing these plates in the core of concrete-filled tubes; also the influence on circular sections is analyzed in the study. The presence of stiffening plates not only has a clear effect on the confinement effect on the core, but also on the ductility of the section. In square-shaped sections this effect is always positive, independently of the thickness of the plates and the width ofthe section; nevertheless, in circular tubes, their influence is not so significant or even negative, since circular geometry is much more effective than a cruciform shape, in terms of confinement and ductility. ln otherwords, the introduction of stiffening plates in circular concrete-filled tubes is always positive, provided that the presence of these plates does not leadn to consider thinner tubes. The proposal of concrete-filled tubes stiffened with plates, or "reticulated" concrete-filled tubes, is interesting from several points of view. These new embedded plates are normally restricted to buckling by the concrete filling, so that they could be fully loaded according to their plastic capacity, being also protected against fire. The introduction of a couple of plales in the core of these tubes not only enhances the confinement effect and ductility, but also it allows a safer response against fire. The cruciform or grid-shaped geometry is interesting also for an excellent behavior under combined states of compression with shear forces or bending -the first case corresponds exactly to those heavily loaded columns of the ground fioors in tall buildings. What is a solution with a clear structural vocation derives quickly into a new interesting sectional repertoire for designers, by analyzing the load-bearing capacity of each independent loading cell of reticulated sections and combining them in different ways. The possibility of analyzing these cells separately allows determining their compressive response depending on their location in the cross-sectional plane and on the proportion between their width and plate thickness .

Hernández Sánchez, Juan Manuel 19 February 2013 (has links)
This methodology is aimed at assessing the environmental impact of buildings, their economic cost and social impact, taking into account the entire life cycle in a systematic, flexible, simple, holistic manner and focused on the comparison of results. Each building has its own characteristics and the application of the life-cycle assessment (LCA) is different in each case. But buildings also have common characteristics, such as materials, construction processes, facilities, building materials and building use. These similarities should enable straightforward comparison between buildings, especially those that are of the same construction type. However, the interpretation, objective, scope and system limits of a life-cycle assessment mean that the results are barely comparable, even if the buildings being compared are similar. The LCA standard methodology is suitable for all products, processes and services. However, it is very open and requires many iterations. The proposed method adjusts the LCA standard methodology for its exclusive use in buildings, avoiding repetition, adapting to all ways of acting from methodology users, and working for all different buildings and areas of sustainability. The methodology consists of five phases. In the first phase the system and the general characteristics of the study are defined. In the second phase the necessary documentation to be used in the rest of the methodology is gathered. In the third phase the information found in the documentation is processed and the inventory data is carried out. In the fourth phase, using the inventory data, the required calculations and analysis of the life cycle are carried out. Finally in the fifth and final phase the results are presented. Three adaptations to the methodology for specific uses have also been made. The first adaptation consists in analysis of alternatives, in which by changing a parameter or combination of parameters, the best alternative for a certain purpose is revealed. The second adjustment consists in refurbishment, in which the building has not yet reached the end of its useful life and it is desired to reduce energy consumption and improve the welfare and comfort of the occupants. The last adjustment consists in dwelling stock, groups of buildings that make up a neighbourhood, district, city, region, country or group of countries. The application of the methodology to a case study confirms that the methodology is suitable for use and that the results are comparable to those using the LCA standard methodology. A life-cycle assessment adapted to the domain of the buildings is as simple and straightforward as a general one, obtaining the same results. Using this methodology a dispersion in the way of processing the data is avoided. The spread of relevant data for the buildings allows for greater ease in comparing results between different studies that apply this methodology. The methodology is useful to gather and organize information about buildings, allowing for the preparation of a summary, with the intention to communicate. It also assists in the design process, highlighting the key issues and what are their relative importance. It is therefore significantly useful for actors who make decisions in the design stage and develop strategies tailored to the objectives. This methodology improves each of the phases of the building process and the whole building, and it increases competitiveness, social satisfaction and ensures sustainability.

Evidence-based practice and vulnerable young people : an exploration of practice wisdom in a third sector setting

Dunne, Justin January 2017 (has links)
This qualitative study considers the notion of evidence-based practice (EBP) and specifically what can be learnt from practice wisdom (PW). It is centres on a third sector organisation working with vulnerable young people. The study uses methods of observation, semi-structured interviews and focus groups, to establish the core components of effective practice. Findings reveal the need to adapt programmes to make them culturally relevant and that four specific approaches are needed for positive outcomes regardless of context. These are building effective working alliances; establishing clear and consistent boundaries with structure and discipline; motivating clients who are not always ready for change; and building hope and aspiration in young people that shows them how their futures might be different. Consideration is given to the ethical imperative to do no harm and findings are presented as to why this might happen based on practice experience. Theoretical fidelity is discussed and findings are critiqued in order to establish why these practice components work, how to avoid causing harm and how such practice may be improved further. It is concluded that although EBP cannot be achieved by an organisation alone due to wider client factors and policy maker decisions, there are core components identifiable through PW that encourage effective practice with vulnerable people.
